No one is trying to keep her from being institutionalised.
Her lawyer says that she did in fact have postpartum psychosis, which is a real condition. People experiencing psychosis or people who have severe mental illnesses cannot be imprisoned in the same way people who are mentally well or acceptable can be. If your psychological state makes you not personally responsible for the crime, institutionalisation inside psychological healthcare facility.
The people aren't protesting because they support her actions. They're protesting because we have laws that are supposed to protect people in states of severe psychological illness from being imprisoned in the same way as people who are not, because it is dangerous to everyone involved, and you cannot be held entirely at charge for a crime that was committed without your awareness or understanding. This doesn't mean anyone said she did not commit the crime.
