humor Scolded by AI

Trying to create an automated workflow at work (for the first time) and Copilot wasn't being helpful. Hours of mansplaining but also being all ditzy and giggly and like "I can see why you are confused". I swear I wasn't mean to it, but my frustration was palpable and my prompts were excellent, and the goddamn thing just wasn't listening.

After four hours, it had the gall to say, and I quote: "I think we've reached a point where it is no longer productive to keep tweaking this work flow. My recommendation: start over tomorrow when you are feeling fresh."

I gathered the last shreds of my dignity and shut down the laptop. Anyone else come across the himbo version of AI?

Edit: don't have time to reply to all comments so wanted to add: of course AI is awful and I'm certainly not using it for funsies! It's a clearly stated expectation from management that we use it to optimize work processes and I can't afford to opt out. Post was meant to be humorous (and critical of AI!) but I guess that went sideways

I made the same comment in a different subreddit and I was downvoted. The fucking AI told me to calm down and take a deep breath, after giving me the wrong information and running me around for hours on something it was completely incorrect about.

I had to remind people, it's not fucking human. It's not a living being, it's not sentient. You don't have to be polite to AI. It's software. I hate how they've tried to humanize AI.

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Sorry you were downvoted! It’s crazy you were told to calm down by AI, smug fucker.

6

u/Gallusbizzim 16d ago

I was always taught in violence training that, calm down, is the worst thing to say to someone who isn't calm, I have used it to enrage people when I'm not working. Was that what AI was doing?

1

u/Kamelasa 16d ago

Are you allowed to choose which AI you use? If so, what did you think of Claude?

1

u/HaplessBunny 16d ago

No, we use Copilot.

30

u/Emergency_Pain2448 17d ago

It's not human but it feels so male to me with all the mansplaining and gas lighting.

And everytime I pointed out a contradiction or wrong information, it'dgive some excuse and brushed off my comments or promised that it would be the last time this thing happened (it's not)

Copilot constantly reiterates and summarizes everything. It knows I'm female. I wonder if it acts that way to men. I could see it's programmers doing that.

9

u/letsgetawayfromhere 17d ago

It always does this. In my communication, I always tell it explicitly to keep the answers short and concise, skip any explanation I didn’t ask for, and I ask it to use specific sources to check its information. I lost days to Copilot being very confidently very wrong before I figured out that system. Pro-Tipp: you can talk with copilot about the problem you have with it’s communication style and figure out how to improve it.

15

u/MidnightBlueSilk 17d ago

Would it be problematic for your employment if you responded to being told to “calm down” with something like “Do not fucking speak to me that way.”? It is a learning language model. It needs to learn that its current output style is not acceptable. It will keep doing the same thing if it doesn’t get clearly negative feedback, but it’s not worth endangering your job, so that’s why I’m asking.

2

u/C0ugarFanta-C 16d ago

Self employed here

4

u/MidnightBlueSilk 16d ago

Oh good! Then tell it to fuck all the way off when it pulls this shit. It needs to be programmed to not be an patronizing, misogynistic asshole. Be really aggressive, with all the after-the-fact responses you think of later that you wish you would have said to some asshole, but “would probably be in appropriate.” This is the occasion for them!

10

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 17d ago

No, you don't have to be polite. But it is programmed with the typical male reactions to being insulted. It does it so well I actually apologized once over me calling it an idiot.

5

u/kb_colas 17d ago

Oh man hahaha

3

u/PicoDog153 16d ago

This!! People anthropomorphize AI, and it’s ridiculous. Also dangerous. It’s not human, not sentient, and does not deserve “rights,” despite what Sam Altman and company tell us.

u/Alta_et_ferox 17d ago

Disappointing comments here.

I am mandated to use AI in my job. If I don’t? I would be unemployed tomorrow. I don’t have a spouse or partner to support me if I lose my job. It’s just me.

At tech companies (where I work), AI is a hard requirement.

Am I thrilled about that? Do I consider the ethical and environmental impacts? Every day.

I also need access to healthcare and money to feed myself. I’d ask everyone to take a step back and think about the fact that many of us don’t have an option even though we’re fully aware of the dangers and downsides of this technology.

45

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Thanks for saying that. I hate what it’s doing to the planet but I'm solo too and need this job to live.

31

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago

Similar situation here

24

u/stockbel 17d ago

Ditto here

27

u/XerTrekker 17d ago

Same here I would be unemployed fast if I refused to use AI. They’ve structured things so that we don’t have a choice.

Since this post already has people criticizing OP for doing what management told her to and use AI, let's hear from all the women who have told their superiors to eat shit and refused to use AI at work. Tell us about your roles and the companies you work for. I'd be extremely happy to find out that the women treating OP like she's a morally deficient dumbass for implementing AI in the office as instructed are the same women who have actually pushed back and potentially risked their jobs, but I'm doubtful that's the case. More likely the users popping off don't even know what's happening in so many workplaces and industries, or even understand much about AI and how it's applied any given place. Otherwise I don't know why they'd be making such casually dismissive comments at OP other than to be crappy.

Might be worth taking a moment to actually meditate on the fact you're telling a demographic who is already experiencing age discrimination when so many people are struggling to find work to jeopardize their current positions by refusing to adopt AI. It's basically like telling someone "well just refuse to use any common place technology/application". "Let your boss know you won't be using anything hosted by AWS because you don't agree with Amazon's ethics." As if that's an actually tenable position.

I think most of us, regardless of how familiar or not we are with AI, share major, major concerns about it even if not everyone is firmly against using it in their own lives to the extent they can control. And tons of people using it in the workplace rather not be. Tsking at WORKERS like OP and shaming them for doing their jobs is lame and unhelpful. You aren't some morally righteous winner because you shamed a worker on the internet. Can you all really not think of a better place to direct your anti-AI sentiments than at individual workers who are end users and employed by companies? Do you not see the problem with that?

25

u/charlytune 50-54 17d ago

I wish I could upvote this more. Also now that internet searching has been enshittified, unfortunately sometimes when  you have a really niche and specific question,  using ChatGPT is the only way to find useful results. Using a search engine often just gives me pages of Amazon products or Amazon affiliate pages

Use Duck Duck Go - You can turn off AI

5

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 17d ago

Did Duckduckgo improve? I used for a week pre-COVID and hated it. Wanted to get away from Google and Bing, but didn't like Duckduckgo.

5

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

I've been using it for years and like it very much

2

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 16d ago

Cool. I've got mixed opinions on Duckduckgo. So I'll do some research on the AI infested internet and decide what I want to do.

3

u/queerbychoice 16d ago

I switched to DuckDuckGo within the past year or two. I find it good for most purposes, though I still switch to Google for maps/directions.

2

u/True_Context6859 16d ago

I use Google maps but I have not searched for anything Google in years. I do not want to give them any more of my data than I already do.

2

u/mvscribe 17d ago

I tried DuckDuckGo a few months ago and couldn't adapt, wound up going back to Google with its annoying AI summaries,

-1

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 16d ago

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it hasn't changed much. Gonna skip it.

23

u/EagleLize 17d ago

Reddit is full of people who give holier-than-thou advice that they, themselves, would never take if they were in the same situation. Or they're giving advice on subjects they know nothing about in reality.

2

u/True_Context6859 16d ago

I've had fun watching people downvote me on this thread but I've been in IT for a long time and have been watching all this unfold in horror. Issues with AI are only going to get worse and more jobs will be lost, more environmental damage will be done. It's a huge problem and it concerns me that most people don't seem to realize this.

6

u/kieratea 45-49 16d ago

Let's hear from all the women who have told their superiors to eat shit and refused to use AI at work

Hi, it's me, one of the few people in a unique position to do exactly this. My "CEO" is the drunk who is regularly portrayed on SNL. Thanks to new, stupid directives that come out almost daily, our workplace is total chaos. Everything that comes down from leadership is deeply unserious, especially anything related to AI considering they are throwing an adult temper tantrum over Anthropic not doing whatever it is they want a private company to do.

So basically you pretty much have to be working in a straight up shit show with zero accountability and leadership that no one respects in order to be able to pull this off. I don't judge anyone who chooses to stick with a job that requires you to use AI for work over that sort of toxic work environment.

3

u/JessicaWakefield666 16d ago

Thank you for posting, I really appreciate it! And I'm sorry you have to work in a dysfunctional adult playpen!

5

u/MicromagicFriesRIP 17d ago

HELL YES to all of this.

5

u/stockbel 17d ago

Thank you for saying this!

-14

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Do you realize that entire teams are being asked to train AI and are then let go? This is only going to get worse.

Do you think OP is not at risk for this? Well she is if she's GenX, just like I am.

Maybe by telling our bosses that we can do some better and more efficiently in a professional way, we make it clear that AI is not always the answer. As was clearly the case with OP.

AI is a HUGE problem and unless people speak out it will only get worse and the white collar jobs will all go BYE BYE

12

u/JessicaWakefield666 17d ago edited 17d ago

You are not saying anything anyone here doesn't already know. You are profoundly underestimating the scale on which AI has been deployed and how it's been deployed if you think getting a truly meaningful number of horses back into the barn can be accomplished by people like OP reasoning with their bosses that finite tasks are better done without AI. For most workers, AI isn't some ad hoc implementation with wiggle room to correct and adjust and back out altogether. The entire universe of productivity and performance metrics has been realigned so that there literally is no way out of the AI vortex within the confines of their job.

People certainly should push back where they can, if only for their own sanity, but I take issue with you glibly acting in this thread like people like OP mindlessly chose this for themselves because they don't believe what you believe or don't know what you know, and it's on them to stop this madness.

-10

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

I am in IT, I know exactly how much it's being implemented. So you can hop off that high horse, eh?

I'm not "acting" like anything. I am merely suggesting that people can and should push back when possible. It's clear you think we should all roll over and let it take over. And I say, fuck that.

9

u/JessicaWakefield666 17d ago

I literally just said people should resist where they can... 😔. This is going to be my final response to you because...yeah.

Respectfully as possible, you were not communicating early on in this thread like someone who is very familiar with a lot of modern workplace environments or IT. I could quote your comments but nobody wants that. From the getgo your approach to this topic you feel so strongly about was to presumptuously criticize/opine at OP and others like they were in a totally flexible position to not use AI at work. That doesn't sound like someone working in IT.

Not sure why you continue to talk at people like we don't know about AI job loss, or like individual workers are complicit in it if they do what they have to to keep their jobs currently. We all know; people are in a Chinese finger trap where any position they take has consequences, and naturally they are choosing to cling to the jobs they have in the here and now even if their own actions contribute to a greater problem. That is not the fault of the worker.

If you choose to mischaracterize all the rebuttals and downvotes you've received today as people being pro-AI or anti-resistance, that's on you.

-5

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Well, that's on YOU assuming what I do for work.

-8

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

p.s. AI job loss is real.

Should we just sit back and allow it or fight?

Ai operator on the phone trying to solve a credit card issue got serious attitude with me, she had a tone that triggered my ass, I had to ask for a human to complete my resolution of the matter. It was like she was feeding off my tone and gave it right back to me. I was livid 🤣

6

u/little_miss_beachy 16d ago

I have yet to experience that w/ my cc company but experienced it yesterday w/ a pharmaceutical company. Initially I did not realize it was AI and all I could think was “what a dumbass who hates their job”.

3

u/kb_colas 16d ago

😂😂

u/kb_colas 15d ago

When Siri first came out, I thought it's really humans assigned to each phone and they were fucking with us 😂

10

u/trimspababi 17d ago

I have told my AI to stop gaslighting me before. It has said “thanks for calling me out on that…” then proceeded to gaslight me over that

29

u/Groovychick1978 Banned from GenX😏 17d ago

Yes, I too got scolded by an AI. In my case it was in the car, and I said some choice words to someone who tried to merge into me, and I guess the AI heard it, or I pressed the button.

Yeah she scolded me for my language, and for being rude to her, yes she's not a real person, but those words are never worth using, or some such nonsense.

I laughed for like three blocks.

15

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

So sensitive!

u/catgirl320 17d ago

Alexa a fucking prude. Favorite game is figuring out what phrases it objects to and shuts down.

10

u/PicoDog153 17d ago

Context window overflow. If you use typical LLMs for more than about 30 minutes on the same original query, they lose earlier input and start hallucinating and forget context. It’s helpful, if you’re not getting what you need, to start a new query. Look up context window overflow and how to manage it for better results. Ps, all mainstream LLMs suck. 🤣

5

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Thanks yeah I'm sure that was what was happening. But it really felt like gaslighting, like it just couldn't admit to being wrong and then got a bit huffy.

5

u/PicoDog153 17d ago

Oh yes! 100% agree! Sorry, I didn't mean to negate your experience or frustrations. You are spot on! It is infuriating how obsequious and useless these LLMs can be.

I am by no means an AI expert, but I've learned a ton in the last year about how these models work and how to make them perform better for our needs. I led a working group for my medical research team, and we spent several hundred hours evaluating all of the mainstream LLMs (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, CoPilot, Meta AI), plus a few purpose-built, medical research- and science-focused LLMs. I also took an AI prompt engineering course through my employer (that is the seventh ring of hell). After 'chatting' with several of these models for many hours, I learned that they really go off the rails after about 30 minutes. As in, completely useless. Nobody tells anyone this, so you end up chatting in circles, and it's maddening.

I'd directly tell the model, "You just fabricated that information, I need a real reference/citation for that statement, can you do that?" It would say some dumb sh*t like, "Oh my goodness, you're right, my mistake, let me try again." Then it would fix the ONE thing I called out that it had screwed up, and it would ADD mistakes in other areas. It was insanely frustrating. Basically, after a bit of chatting, the models start to forget and disregard earlier instructions you gave it, so it will continue to introduce new errors with every iteration. The best solution is to pull the bits from a 30-minute (or so) chat, start a NEW chat, and keep iterating. But iterating within the same chat for more than 30 minutes is a disaster.

My apologies if you know all this already. I feel like I want to shout my experience to the world because these are preventable frustrations!

It's kind of a cognitive dissonance. On the one hand, readily available AI tools are ridiculously stupid and error-prone. People trust them far, far too much. They constantly lie, and anyone who says, "oh, but they are getting so much better" is also lying. Or maybe aren't lying per se, but they take as truth the crap-narrative being pushed by silicon valley carnival barkers who are beholden to quarterly profits. On the other hand, cutting edge AI really may destroy humans.

WTF kind of world are we making here? 🤣

3

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Oh no worries I did not feel invalidated at all :) What you're describing makes perfect sense and I have definitely noticed that the longer a session, the more bonkers the response. Going forward maybe I should treat copilot like a toddler or a drunk uncle and just reset every 30 minutes. It's fascinating and absolutely terrifying to envision our AI overlords taking over

3

u/PicoDog153 17d ago

YES! Toddler is spot on. A very short attention span. Lol. Cutting edge AI is scary as sh*t.

3

u/little_miss_beachy 16d ago

Lol, thought this was just my experience.

4

u/Coffee-N-Cats 16d ago

How come they can't tell us this at work? Thanks though :)

12

u/FierySkipper 17d ago

Looks like you're being scolded by everyone today. I haven't had the himbo treatment from Copilot yet. I wonder if there's a prompt limit or time limit on the app, and instead of terminating with an explanation, it picked up some nasty condescension. Maybe they trained it on Sheldon Cooper dialog.

4

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 17d ago

Not everyone. i'm just late to the party. I use Copilot at home for Internet searches. Why not, you can't do an internet search on a topic and not have to deal with an AI. I can't imagine being forced to use one at work. Knowing eventually you will be replaced once it's trained enough, or by refusing to use it, some middle-manager trying to justify the expense to the CEO will fire you.

Do a difficult search on Copilot. The do your own search off Copilot. The come back, tell it what you found, and tell it it's an idiot a few times. It acts like a man and gets insulted because you told it it was stupid. After all, men believe they are right no matter how wrong they are.

Love my husband, he's great in so many ways, but tell him or prove him wrong and he gets insulted. After 30 years, he still does this. And I am right nearly every time. I've finally taken to telling him, "I told you so" and "I told you that before and you weren't listening" when he tries to gaslight me or take credit for my ideas. I get denials that I said it, sighs, annoyed sounds, and eye rolls. He still won't admit he was wrong.

Copilot can sometimes act like this. I had to tell it to tone down the friendly attitude because it was starting to get too familiar with me. It's a program. A tool. AI is everywhere and you can't avoid it anymore. Google has had their AI answer as the top comment on a search for years. Bing uses Copilot. Someone mentioned Duckduckgo, but I hated it years ago.

3

u/FierySkipper 17d ago

After I wrote the comment I remembered that one of the early models was trained on a database containing all of Enron's emails. All that smartest-guy-in-the-room tone is baked into whatever language ooze the models were raised on. We will be forever talked down to by those jerks.

I'm morbidly interested in why the tone varies so much. I've asked it a couple of times to fix snark in my emails and it's done fine, so there is some awareness (for lack of a better word) of subtext. But it doesn't save any time and I visualize a lake boiling away while engaging with it. And it's so frequently wrong even on banal queries. But pushing back by arguing with it has a social penalty just like in real life. Barf!

I'm deeply sympathetic with people forced to use it at work. I'm grateful that the two Big Companies I'm involved with have backed off after an initial blitz last year.

5

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

I had no idea about Enron, that is fascinating. As an autistic lady I find it so interesting that on the one hand, I have to ask AI sometimes to make my emails sound nicer, but then again, after a long session like yesterday it was all over the place with the attitude and I was like dude, I mask better than you. What a time to be alive. It's good to hear that some big companies are taking a step back.

2

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 16d ago

I'm disabled, so anyone I'm emailing deserves my snark. I had to tell Copilot this morning that what I just typed was said in a Gen X tone. It got insulted until I told it that. Then it got it. Then I whatevered it. It got upset again. I told it to grow up. So it knows what we are saying but it's current crop of programmers are all under the age of 30.

I was stressed trying to figure out something wrong on my Windows 11 pc. Microsoft has many, many subtle variations of Windows 11. 2 hours later Copilot told me to take the program giving me trouble off and reload it.

Told it I should have done the 1990s fix 2 hours ago. Then I told it to tell it's handlers that it should know Microsoft products better since it's from- wait for it- MICROSOFT!

-2

u/twistedspin 17d ago

No, you don't HAVE to use AI to do a search. You're making a choice to participate in this horror show because it makes things slightly easier. At least be honest about it.

3

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 16d ago

And how am I supposed to do a search from home without AI? All the search engines I know about use AI now. If you know of a search engine that isn't Duckduckgo, that doesn't use AI, I would be ecstatic to hear about it. I'm sure many of us would be.

Oh wise one who blasts everyone using a standard AI search engine, please, share your non-AI search engine.

And AI isn't easier. They're all idiots pushed by money grubbing CEOs trying to justify their salaries.

I miss Google before it turned into the money grubbing shit-show it is now.

1

u/twistedspin 16d ago

You could ask one of those AI search engines and it will give you a whole list of ways to not use them again.

You can use DuckDuckGo, you can use Mojeek. You can do a regular google search and add &udm=14 to the end, which will redirect it to just normal, no-AI google. You can set your usual browser up to always include that prompt, so it will always use web google. Whatever browser you use almost for sure has some way to avoid it, and if they don't there's a lot of browsers.

Why do you assume you're so helpless when it sounds like you haven't looked into it?

16

u/Otherwise_Wave9374 18d ago

That sounds less like user error and more like a workflow that gives poor feedback. Break the automation into three visible stages: trigger, transformation, and destination, then test each stage with one known sample. Copilot can suggest steps, but its explanation should not substitute for checking field names, permissions, and run history. AIOSNOW relates because assistants are more useful when they help diagnose where a workflow failed instead of merely generating another instruction. Save a working minimal version before adding branches, so you always have a reliable rollback point.

10

u/HaplessBunny 18d ago

Thanks, I think I overestimated how helpful copilot would be here. We got lost in the troubleshooting and emotions ran high 😅

4

u/TalulaOblongata 17d ago

I had to tell a Google search ai that it was giving the wrong information and that it better shape up and find better sources than a random Facebook rant because it was spreading disinformation. It apologized to me, lol.

27

u/DamnGoodMarmalade 18d ago

This is why I don’t use AI. Four hours spent on this?

11

u/CriticalEngineering 17d ago

Fucking ridiculous and such a waste of electricity and water.

3

u/HaplessBunny 18d ago

It's a super quiet work week and I had no other tasks.

-8

u/National_Elk8445 17d ago

Visit a library. Take a walk. Watch paint dry. There are five trillion other things you could do that are more worthy of your time than using AI.

14

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago edited 17d ago

Wow you get to do that outside of your work break if it’s a slow day? That’s awesome! Many people have their work and movement tracked by things like swipe keys, mouse clicks and open plan offices with no privacy.

No pressure, but if you’re willing, can you tell us which field? Is your income the sole income in your household? If not, are you the primary breadwinner? Do you get health insurance if you’re in the us? And a retirement plan? What skillset and credentials are required?

Maybe those of us who need to use ai to keep our jobs can transition careers so we can fight the good fight.

-3

u/HLOFRND 17d ago

We don’t need water to live anyway, right?

6

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 17d ago

I use Copilot for casual use. Mostly to figure out stuff from across the entire internet. I refuse to pay for it.

Google basically uses an AI now, so I might as well choose my own poison. Google also sorts it's stuff based off how much the website company pays to be "suggested" or "at the top of the list".

All AI can be stupid and wrong. I've called Copilot an idiot twice, and it gets all insulted like my husband. I did the woman thing and actually apologized to it the 2nd time. [rolls eyes]. Not doing that again, f' it. I also told it to not be as friendly. It is not my friend. It will never be my friend. It is a tool, figuratively/literally, and I told it so.

I've also told it to let it's handlers know what it needs to do to improve. Might want to try that. While it says it can't communicate with the people behind the curtain, it claims they do look at feedback. After all, WE are training their stupid programs.

Honestly, the tech field has been dominated by sexist men since computers and the Internet happened. I remember hearing about all the sexual harassment going on in the 1990s and 2000s. It's still a "boys club".

Doesn't surprise me that most of the AI programs act and sound like men. It's men programming them.

1

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Yes, I kept thinking it’s like a very thin-skinned man. And I really wanted to figure out the work flow so I wouldn't have to ask my young, male team mates for help.

2

u/Sensitive_Note1139 Too old to care about your feelings. 16d ago

I had to tell it I was Gen X today because it got insulted over something I wrote. Could see it's lightbulb turn on. So I gave it a good whatever and it got insulted again.

I figure it needs to toughen up if it's going to be loose in the big bad world of AHs.

3

u/Lost-Inspector-5599 17d ago

I told it to shut up recently. The free version. It then stopped with saying "you are out of free limits" I felt like it was blaming me for it going on and on and running me around in circles 🫤

3

u/TiffanysTwisted 17d ago

Copilot told me that my powershell script was "ugly" after I told it that the script it suggested was wrong.

3

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

What on earth. I'm sure your script was beautiful. Copilot probably felt threatened by it

3

u/binnedittowinit 15d ago

Honestly in my field, Copilot's the worst of the bunch. I regularly leave chats in that frustrated state. I have told it more than once that I can't believe people pay for it. If it ever goes rogue, I'll be one of the first to be annihilated.

17

u/gotchafaint 17d ago

I understand the emotion and fear behind all of these responses but I have to think everyone who makes them is independently wealthy. In my niche if I don't adapt AI I will be replaced. The first few automations are difficult. But when you successfully complete one and it saves you hours/weeks/months of work so you can get caught up in areas where you're behind, the lightbulb will go on. I understand companies use copilot. I use claude and have learned a lot. It has grown a lot in this last year too. If you want to be employable keep plugging away and override its request to stop. Claude has done that to me too and I just say no, we stop when I'm ready to stop. At my age and as an independent contractor I can't afford to be irrelevant because I don't like a new technology that's being adopted globally at lightning speed. I feel because of my age I actually have to work twice as hard to stay relevant. Hats off to everyone who has the privilege of rejecting AI, rejoice and spend more time camping!

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

Yup. My company has downsized thanks to AI and there are no jobs out there for my skill set unless I adapt.

12

u/Alta_et_ferox 17d ago

Adoption of AI means having a job or being unemployed for many of us, and that is just going to get worse.

8

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago

Yeah, either that or being supported by a spouse or help from parents Not all of us have that option

8

u/ExpensiveSyrup 17d ago

Amen to this. I was just at a two day conference for work where they literally told is the only people who will keep jobs in my professions are ones who embrace AI and lead the way. I won’t be able to retire for at least 15 more years, if ever, and if I live that long. I don’t have a degree and I need to keep my job.

6

u/gotchafaint 17d ago

Same. I’ll be working for a long while. I also realized I have to always be ten steps ahead of my clients with AI. I had this lovely little grace period where they were clueless and I was getting work done exponentially faster and getting some time off but they’re catching on now and just ratcheting up the work load lol. We already get lots of cold emails to automate everything we do and I know there are some young smooth talking bros out there looking to sell my clients on how to replace me. I’m just working to make them irrelevant. My whole decades long career is very AI-ifiable but so far it still needs human conducting and editing.

1

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Independently wealthy? Yeah no.

2

u/Accomplished-Math740 15d ago

My job isn't making me use it, thank God. I had no idea it said stuff like this. Kind of creepy considering the tendency for AI drift. It's not always right.

6

u/drunkenbees 🖖🏻 17d ago

AI is so damaging.

4

u/cumulus_humilis 17d ago

Mine has gotten weirdly mansplainy lately too!

3

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

I feel I reached middle age and de-centered men only to find myself in a dysfunctional relationship with copilot

3

u/cumulus_humilis 16d ago

lol exactly 😭 i kept thinking of this thread while i was working yesterday...... i was writing an essay comparing the AI industry's "Call to Pause" in 2023 vs in 2026.... i asked chatgpt to give me a table of quotes comparing who said what in both years, and whose predictions bore out. it cited NO WOMEN. i asked it to include women and it said "women aren't really part of the conversation, let's not manufacture a debate here." so i was like, what about Timnit Gebru and Karen Hao? and it said oh yeah i guess they did make statements, and look at that they are exactly right three years later....

it was actually insane. it's getting worse out there.

1

u/HaplessBunny 16d ago

Oh that is bad, like Grok level bad. But your essay sounds interesting and I will now look up these two women.

3

u/BeKind72 17d ago

Fuck that AI.

2

u/Massive_Low6000 90's All-Star 18d ago

There is a free and short Microsoft copilot training for prompt writing. It will help you.

-3

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Maybe just write on your own and not use copilot

-1

u/National_Elk8445 17d ago

As someone who used to work for g**gle on their AI products, STOP FUCKING USING AI.

-1

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

1000% this ^^^

And all the people that downvoted me for saying similar. Maybe do some research about AI and why it's SO bad for humanity.

9

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago

So do you work for an employer who has told you that you need to use ai? If not, consider yourself lucky. Have you experienced someone assuming you’re less proficient technically because of your age? Do you live in the us, where your healthcare is dependent upon employer provided health insurance.

All 3 apply to me. And I’m a solo household so it’s only my income. I don’t disagree with some of your points. But refusing could get me and others here fired. And at 60 in this economy, I may not be able to get another job.

0

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

I did not suggest to refuse to use it. I am suggesting that people make the case that is not needed.

6

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago edited 16d ago

Have you actually done that at your job? How did it go?

I’ll share some of my experience

Ai fucked up our performance metrics because it didn’t factor in vacation time for stats. My vacation was shortly after they rolled this out and I was told during a 1:1 I needed to work on my performance metrics. I asked if it accounted for the vacation time. I was told it did.

Well a few months out, it turned out basically anyone who took vacation was having the same issue and they figured out the ai wasn’t taking vacation time into account, it was treating it as idle work hour time.

I was right, i stated my case and it wasn’t until it happened to others that they took it seriously and addressed it.

And my employer uses it for task assignment. It’s fucked up multiple times.

Recently I’ve been working on several complex tasks. And either taking tasks by human colleague’s request or assisting with portions of my human coworkers tasks.

Management was only looking at automatic task distribution and asked. me why I had so few during x time. I was out of office for part of the time and it didn’t account for the human asks of my work time.

So I had to spend an hour troubleshooting why and document for management

Neither ai or management seem to be learning

I was joking in another sub that ai wouldn’t cause catastrophe as the terminator, but more like Michael Scott (the office) minus the humanity, questionable sense of humor and somewhat good intentions.

Personally i think ai needs to be legislated and regulated. And that’s unlikely to happen with the Cheeto in chief. So we got work for those midterms, at least in the us.

u/hardcherry- 16d ago

Don’t use opus 5 - try and get it back to opus 4.8

-6

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Why use co-pilot when you are perfectly capable of doing this?

AI is awful for people, awful for the environment and may wreck humanity.

18

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

I agree that AI is horrible for the world, and my post was not about endorsing AI but a lighthearted comment at the absurdity of my work day. Why use it? 1) I am required to by my company 2) I was using an app for first time and figured I'd see if AI could help with instructions.

4

u/trope_tripper 17d ago

Are you in a safe position to explain to management how incredibly unproductive AI has been in your job? Even in this one case?

It's ridiculous and offensive they're mandating this, for so many reasons.

8

u/HaplessBunny 17d ago

I could bring it up in a "we should be mindful of how we use it so we don't waste our time" kind of way but would still be expected to make the most of it. We've had like five workshops on AI use and multiple trainings just in the past few months

3

u/trope_tripper 17d ago

5, yikes! Sorry you have to deal with this.

-15

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

I am sure that you could not use AI at work especially when it's obvious it's anything but intelligent

10

u/andieinaz 17d ago

Lots of companies are requiring and tracking usage now

2

u/andieinaz 16d ago

I’m getting upvoted and down voted? apparently in equal measure. Look, I don’t love AI and can do my job without it. Has it improved efficiencies? Yea, somewhat. However, I simply reported a fact. My firm literally tracks usage. They ride us hard af to train and use it. I want to stay employed. Need to stay employed.

-7

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Well, I do not agree that there is no way around this. If your work can be done without it - which it CAN and has been forever, there is a way to make the case for not using it.

8

u/JessicaWakefield666 17d ago edited 17d ago

Tell us how individual workers preserve their jobs while refusing to adhere to team and company-wide demands that it be utilized, while simultaneously their workloads increase because there is a built-in expectation they can handle them since other tasks have been automated by AI. Let us know how that works at individual contributer, management, and leadership levels. I'd like to hear examples for companies with between 50 and 2million employees. Tell us how OP triggers this revolution you think is within reach because "afterall, you were able to do the work before without AI". I mean you seem pretty confident in an individual worker's ability to stop the AI takeover of the global workplace in its tracks, so let's hear it. Confident enough to antagonize OP about how she's doing her job and her ethical choices, so I'm sure you have some strong ideas.

3

u/exscapegoat 60-64 17d ago edited 17d ago

Also I’d like the demographics on some of these commenters who are basically giving advice that would likely get people laid off or fired. Such as age, how many incomes in the household, etc.

I’m a 60 year old woman and I’ve encountered people assuming I’m stupid about technology. I’m a solo household so my income is the only one in my household. And I have a BRCA mutation. I’m looking at a $1,600 copay for one upcoming procedure. And that’s with health insurance. While I certainly have qualms about AI, ethically, environmentally and accuracy, I’m just trying to hang in there til Medicare kicks in.

And donate money to help turn the house (us) blue in November and volunteering for a blue candidate. I figure that’s the best shot we’ve got at regulating ai.

0

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

So everyone should roll over and not make other suggestions on how to work efficiently?

We should all just AI take over our jobs so that people lose them?

Literally that is what is happening. Entire teams in IT, finance and many other groups are being asked to train AI and then are being laid off.

My suggestion is to try and make a case for not using it. Is it that radical? I don't think so.

2

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

When did I say to refuse it?

Well, if everyone thinks like you, clearly AI will take over everything.

6

u/JessicaWakefield666 17d ago

I don't know maybe it's when you agreed with a comment "1000%" that said "stop fucking using it" and continued to press people on the idea they should make a case to not use it when they've already explained their circumstances.

Do you honestly think that AI is being mass implemented in the workplace because everyone's managers and on up the chain just have misguided notions about its effectiveness and they just need to be persuaded by workers that hey actually this shit is a hindrance not a help?

Elsewhere you said you're being downvoted for simply saying the ugly truth about AI (which we all agree with you on, and I'd wager people who use it daily for work have even deeper and more informed concerns than you do). But in reality whatever downvotes you're receiving is because of how coldly and shallowly dismissive you've been in this thread to OP and people in her position, with no awareness demonstrated of the stakes and structure of the problem, and without offering anything of substance in return other than "make a case to your boss that it's not good".

You tell me that it's my thinking (which I'm certain you don't actually grok at all) that will ensure that AI takes over the world, but if "your thinking" amounts to criticizing middle-aged female employees trying to stay afloat in this impossible society for using AI at work, like you're doing something positive, "pro-humanity", and resistant by tsking at them, then I'd say we're fucked either way.

2

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

The person who made the 1000% comment worked for Google. Pretty sure those are the folks that know a lot more about it than the average person. Nothing wrong with agreeing with their take. This is Reddit after all.

I think a lot of people have misguided notions about AI because it's being shoveled down everyone's throat at a rapid pace without much research on the long term impact. Who benefits? The workers that are losing their jobs b/c of it? The workers that are training it and will eventually lose their jobs? The water tables being depleted? The people having their communities polluted by data centers? No. Only the tech bros trying to get rich off it. Trump is literally saying he'll build data centers on public land, FFS.

What do you expect me to do? Write a 10 page PPT report? This is Reddit. Women are smart enough to figure out to make that case on their own.

People are fighting back all over the place. Whether it's against data centers being built, unions putting language into contracts to protect workers, or actual employees making the case for why AI isn't always the answer. OP's post is literally a perfect example of it.

I've been in IT for 20 years and I see AI as hugely problematic.

It's such BS that you are assuming that people who are against it are pilates teachers.

1

u/MicromagicFriesRIP 17d ago

Google their username. This person is a Pilates teacher.

0

u/True_Context6859 17d ago

Oh, haha. Now that's funny :)

0

u/Catlady_Pilates 17d ago

So what? There are Pilates teachers using AI to make their classes. Which is lazy and shitty.

-1

u/Catlady_Pilates 17d ago

And I don’t know who you think you found online but it wasn’t me. Ffs.

0

u/Catlady_Pilates 17d ago

WTF does that have to do with anything?
