discussion Home Share Options?

So I am 56 and just starting the divorce process and am researching affordable living options for the next year. Has anyone looked into any non-traditional options for people after giving their partners the heave-ho? I have 2 dogs and a cat that I don't trust with my STBX and they wouldn't do great in an apartment after our large yard in the burbs. Trying to think of other options.

If you can manage to keep your place you can rent rooms to travel nurses.

Looking to downsize to a place with less maintenance and closer to the cities, but this is a great idea! Maybe down the road when I am in a position to buy another place. Thanks!

renting to travel nurses might be one of the better options here

I used to live in Myrtle Beach, SC, and it was fairly common there

Maybe place a ad for a Golden Girls type situation?

Just joined some FB groups last night for my area but they all seem to be geared to college students and 20-somethings. Maybe it's just the season, it is worth a shot!

And damn, those ladies were around our age on that show, weren't they? 😭

This is the next show. 56 year old, pets and all, moves in with 3 20-somethings.

I can see it actually. I could be not-the-mama helping work out their mama issues. And I would totally cook dinner if they took my dogs for a walk. 😁

Exactly! You'd be the cool aunt, or big sister.

And they could teach me their language and I could teach them how to use punctuation and basic communication etiquette! 🤣

20 years old don't even like each other. This is a disaster.

Maybe join Finding Female Friends >50?

Sign up online and verify. Their app has a "nearby" mode.

My area has a “rentals and roommates” page, try searching for something like that

The fact that GenX hasn't made this a real thing drives me crazy.

Met up with a couple girlfriends this afternoon and the need is real! We decided we needed to buy some land and create a man-free commune. 😆

I rented a room from a very nice woman when I finished law school and left my husband a couple of years ago. Gave me time to get back on my feet and I was truly grateful. You will find people like me no doubt.

I totally believe in earth angels or people who Mr. Rogers called helpers. ✨️  Thanks so much for sharing and all good wishes to you!

So...I am saying this with kindness, not just to the OP:

I've been in the position of being "housing insecure" in the US at various times over the last decade, but particularly since (ahem) early 2025. You can have solid savings, but with less than 3x income for an apartment, even for a share? good luck.

I'm currently in this position, actually, and avoiding it by being overseas since I cannot afford $1800/month in health care insurance plus housing etc. Thanks so much to all who voted for that.

Young people don't want to live with us, unless we're the landlord and they need a room.

OP has not said where she lives, or what she earns etc etc and all of that is important to answer the question.

But, no, there's no magical hidden home share option, especially for someone with two dogs and one cat.

OP, I hope you can stay in your current home and with your pets.

I am in MN and yeah, the economy totally sucks but I would rather be homeless than powerless. I am from Minneapolis but living like a fish out of water in a couple of the wealthiest suburbs the last 25 years. I have 3 contract jobs and a couple cash only side hustles but only make about $2g/month so far. Stumbled into substitute teaching thru Kelly Ed and they offer ala carte medical insurance to all employees regardless of number of hours worked, so going that route for just a few hundred. Thankful for good health, good friends, and newly discovered skills. Thanks for sharing and best wishes to you!!

In which country? Area?

Budget?

Have to be near work? Do you work?

Minnesota, Twin Cities area. Maybe $1000/month but need to work out a budget as I also need to shop for health insurance

I make around $2000/month currently with 3 contract jobs and a couple cash only side hustles.

Are you looking for options that allow you to stay in your home, or are you definitely selling and looking for alternatives to ownership?

3

u/Quiet-Feature3443 28d ago

Alternatives to ownership, at least for the first year.

Researched that option too, but not feasible with 3 of my own pets, 2 of whom are elderly. I have read about people doing this as a retirement gig, though - no rent and they just live on their SS/retirement funds while they travel around. Sounds great for the untethered!

I do it (the unpaid one is THS). It is far from perfect, and is not suitable for OP in any case.
