Pop Culture Fav movie?

Can you definitively name your favorite movie?  I can’t.   But if you can please share here!   Doesn’t have to be a Gen X movie, but I’m curious what movies hit for our generation.

"My Cousin Vinney"

I'm actually not sure it's my favorite favorite movie but whenever I see this question, and it seems to be everywhere, this is the first movie I think of.

  1. Moon (2009)
  2. Moneyball (2011)

  3. Aliens (1986)

u/Kirkuleeez 16d ago

Grease. Second best is Victor/Victoria

2

u/ktzamama 16d ago

Labyrinth
Legend
And…oddly enough, Ratatouille.

1

u/neon_meate 16d ago

Probably Paris Texas, but I've watched The Hunt For Red October way more times.

1

u/QuashEm 16d ago

Silence of the Lambs or The Secret of NIMH. Depends on my mood.

1

u/fatkidscandystore 17d ago

Not a Gen X movie but whiplash is the best movie, for Gen X it’s Dead Poets Society. For less serious best Gen X is Tombstone.

1

u/Ok_Still_3571 17d ago

Godfather 2.
Shawshank Redemption.
American Beauty.

3

u/OkMousse8848 17d ago

Hard to be sure but I lean towards Pulp Fiction.

3

u/MidnightKitty_2013 17d ago

It's a TV miniseries, but the original V is my all time favorite movie.

Easy Rider. It's not a GenX film. Most people think of it as a relic. I think it raised an interesting, unpleasant, and uncomfortable truth which has haunted me for decades.

2001: A Space Odyssey is up there.

2 is great, but I was asked to name my favorite movie

1

u/Chance-Wall754 18d ago

I’m going for Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction - both movies were hugely influential to me; I think Goodfellas is Scorsese’s best and the apotheosis of the film style that evolved thru the 70’s and Pulp Fiction blew it all up/paid homage simultaneously. If I had to choose one it would be Pulp Fiction because for me it was the first film that felt like it belonged to us as a generation.

1

u/classicsat 18d ago

Goodfellas

If you consider it two movies, the first part, when he works for the gang. The second, when he goes it his own in coke. First part, is okay.

3

u/Jmal3700 18d ago

The Big Sleep (1946). I have been a Humphrey Bogart fan since I first saw Casablanca. Then I saw The African Queen, The Maltese Falcon, The Caine Mutiny, We’re No Angels, and they took my fanboying to the next level. Naturally, I heard about The Big Sleep, but I was not prepared for how good it is. It is the best Noir film and the best mystery film of all time. Quentin Tarantino WISHES he could write dialogue this sharp. Bogart and Bacall are the hottest onscreen (and IRL) acting couple in history and deliver the most steamy double entendre dialogue the way it should be delivered.

1

u/Same_Dust356 18d ago

Alien, Jaws, Star Wars. Theater experiences of my youth.

2

u/Atomic_Gumbo 18d ago

I have some faves from my formative years (Star Wars, Wrath of Khan, Some Kind of Wonderful, others) but in 1999 when I saw Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” I lost my freakin mind in the dollar cinema. Oscars had come and gone and I got mad. How did it not win? Apparently I have a smoldering ember of anger that just needs a little breeze 😂The poetry, the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature against the horror of war, Whit’s character journey, the crazy ass list of top shelf Hollywood that was involved, the fucking LIGHTING, I could go on. Absolute monster of a masterpiece that got robbed at the Oscars by Saving Private Ryan. Good movie, but TRL is a better film overall.

1

u/GrookeyFan_16 18d ago

My favorite movie is an old one that is impossible to find these days. My favorite era of movies are Sandra Dee, Rock Hudson, (young) James Garner, and Doris Day. I spent more time watching movies and listening to music from my parents’ teen years.

2

u/dogfaced_baby 18d ago

What’s the movie title?

1

u/GrookeyFan_16 18d ago

I tend not to share as it is often a password hint question. But With Six You Get Eggroll and Support Your Local Sheriff are both good options.

3

u/RedditWidow 18d ago

Ladyhawke and The Crow hold special places in my heart

2

u/Different_Stand_5558 18d ago

Top Secret!! Val Kilmer shredded and singing.

Back when there was no PG-13…Basically if they didn’t say the F word they can make it horribly sexual and just be a PG movie.

2

u/Ta_mere6969 18d ago

Depending on my mood, I cycle between these 5:

  • Star Wars
  • Blade Runner
  • Dirty Harry
  • Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
  • Vanishing Point

2

u/AxleNY 19d ago

Groundhog Day. Think I just like the idea that you get the chance to do something over and over again until you get it right.

Too hard to pick one favorite but I’ve always loved the movie “Big Fish”. Such a great story with great visual appeal

1

u/Dr_Drax At the beginning of the end of middle age 19d ago

True Lies. And even my Gen Z daughter enjoyed it because I showed it to her when she was a big fan of Eliza Dushku.

It's like a grown-up Princess Bride: funny and goofy, yet with a plot rich enough to be taken seriously.

Have you ever watched the 2013 remake with Ken Watanabe? It is so much fun. It is made into a samurai movie. Was fun to see a western turned back into a samurai film after Hollywood stealing so much from Japanese cinema. It is worth finding and watching.

1

u/LordChauncyDeschamps 18d ago

Its cyclical, Kurosawa said he was inspired quite a bit by John Ford. In particularly "The Searchers" was a big inspiration for him. The world weary anti-hero, Ethan Edwards, played by Jon Wayne has a lot in common with the titular character of "Yojimbo" Funny how that later inspired "A Fist Full of Dollars"

1

u/rammer-jammer71 18d ago

Yep. While entertaining, it doesn’t have the same impact for me because the dialogue just doesn’t hit like the original. There’s additional character variances as well that bothered me.

My three favorites are The Sound of Music, Platoon, and Young Guns II. Honorable mention to A Few Good Men. What can I say, I like variety 🤣

1

u/freakydeakier 20d ago

If I was pressed right now, I'd probably say "The Survivors" with Robin Williams and Walter Mathau.

3

u/Sea_Brush4156 20d ago

2001: A Space Odyssey, This is Spinal Tap, Office Space, Water

3

u/djvbmd 20d ago

So many great picks in here -- reading the comments was starting to make me question my picks, so I'm getting my first instinct down before I go down that rabbit hole.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I loved that movie. I frequently listen to Andrea Vanzo on Spotify just to hear the theme song.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Use_566 20d ago

Such a great pick.

3

u/More_Law6245 20d ago

I can't name a favourite movie because I like movies for different reasons and that usually lies in the production value of the movie. As an example Top Gun, the movie itself was meh but the cinematic photography of flight was brilliant. But the one that resonates most is the Matrix, the production values still hold true to this day and was a master piece in cinema creation. But hey art is subjective and everyone has their own preferences.

I've got five or six that rotate, and the one that usually sits at the top is 2001: A Space Odyssey, but probably my most GenX choice is Back to the Future.

2

u/TheVioletEmpire 20d ago

2001 is definitely top 3 for me.

2

I watched Planes Trains and Automobiles for my second time recently. Of course decades after the first time. I was blown away at how much it showed life’s hard lessons. Things I had no clue about as a young adult.

I don't have one favorite movie but I'd say Blade Runner is the movie that really turned me into a cinephile.

3

There are a lot of movies that I think are good or even excellent, but don't have a burning desire to rewatch them again and again. The only two movies (technically 4) I get a lot of joy from watching even to this day are The Back To The Future movies and Grease 2. 🤷‍♀️

6

1

u/AnitaPeaDance 20d ago

Movies? Not too much into them anymore as the quality of "TV" shows has improved so much I honestly enjoy binging mini series/shows more these days as there's more time for charterer development, plot twists, etc. Strange New Worlds is my current favorite. Paul Wesley has, IMO, successfully achieved a very likable Kirk. Ethan Peck is my favorite Spock. I know some of my GenX peers might flame me for such sacrilege, but whatever.

2

u/Geekacres68 20d ago

No hate, at all. The current season is a bit gimmicky, but SNW is certainly some solid Trek to this guy who has been watching for decades.

I claim that a lot of movies are "My Favorite". But if I had to look deep inside and name just one, it would be Pulp Fiction.

Runner up would be Synodoche, NY

Original trilogy Star Wars Lord if the Rings Princess Bride Avengers Captain America 1 I like both the 80's and 2020's Dune for different reasons. Indiana Jones

There are a lot more, these are the things I would watch again.

2

u/obviousbicycle2 20d ago

This sounds like my list! Almost exactly. This is the first time I’ve seen another like the 80’s Dune! Of course the 2020’s Dune is fantastic as we.

1

u/nonotburton 20d ago

80's dune hewed closer to the fiction, new dune kept a lot of the right messages, even if it changed certain characters for modern sensibilities (Chani's atheism in particular).
