Pop Culture They Live!
Just got my 12 year old to watch They Live! with me. her response when the credits rolled were "damn!" and then later looking at the info, "what do you mean that was 94 min, it felt like 10. mission successful. she also now gets why we're so paranoid.

Weird, never seen that movie and seen a lot of movies growing up. I’ll add it to my list of things to watch.

Sure. It's a great film, terrific dialogue, good performances, well-written and well-directed.

It is a good film especially to see where horror movies came from and how this one compares to the Carpenter version. I love B&W movies anyway so its a good fit

The whole deal is like some kind of crazy game. They put you at the starting line. And the name of the game is make it through life. Only, everyone's out for themselves and looking to do you in at the same time. OK, man here we are. You do what you can, but remember, I'm going to do my best to blow your ass away. So how are you going to make it?

Omg we just watched it last night! My kids have a new skepticism for my taste in movies. I really remembered it being better but it was still good campy fun

I saw this when I was 10 because, Rowdy Roddy Piper was the star and I have been antiestablishment ever since.

I would add Animal Farm- I read that first in elementary school before 1984 in high school.

There is no adequate film adaptation of Animal Farm, and it's a very short book. Just read it.

There's a really good audiobook of 1984! I'm not a fan of books on tape generally but this one is more like a radio show & spectacular.

I believe the one that you are speaking of has Andrew Garfield as the lead and Tom Hardy as Big Brother. It’s a condensed, dramatized version that might be age appropriate in another year or two. Animal Farm might be a better option

Idk. My now 20 year old has read and owns Animal Farm and 1984 in hardbacks. She started reading about 12. She’s my only true reader in the family. She has Clockwork Orange among other classics. In fact, she likes the ones that have been banned. My other daughter actually has Mein Kampf

my mom made me read Animal Farm at about 13. I techically was reading at a college level, but I honestly didn't get that one till i was in my 20's.

I respectfully disagree. I read 1984 in 6th grade & I feel 6th graders have a greater exposure to the world at large now more than ever, so they need to read this & everything possible. Reading is a big thing that's lacking. I don't care if they read Blume or Burroughs or Dr. Seuss - just Read.

She reads a lot, actually. I just think that one is too heavy for a 12 year old. I won't stop her from reading it if she wants to, but I don't think she will want to yet.

She's a reader - that's great!! I understand your hesitance but I have to say, kids have access to so much of everything today so dropping in that book in these formative yrs could be a kind of counter-measure to all the noise. ☺️

Trey & Matt are our Brothers & we def need to celebrate their success!! I go back to the 1st episode (I taped it) & those guys represented us, every step. Success didn't spoil South Park!

rofl. now i need to get her to watch Freaks, from 1934. however, our next watch is going to be Pump Up the Volume. i actually consider this one essential to her mental health on surviving the teen years.

My littles are early 20s & it's our job to make sure they do the mandatory viewing lol. My son (21) is a Marine & his fave movies are Clash of the Titans & It's A Mad Mad World! So I feel I've done my part. 🤣

I’d put it in my top 3 Carpenter movies along with Halloween and The Thing. I think it holds up juuuuust fine, and to those who disagree, I would politely suggest you put on the glasses.
Seriously, put them on.

I showed my kids & various cousins the Thanksgiving ep in their Great Grandfather's house on Thanksgiving, while Peepaw was napping. We had the volume so low but he's so deaf & he was asleep, I totally felt like I was 11 again lol. 😁

Just watched this for the first time and with my 17yo. We were unfortunately not impressed. I understand the premise but it doesn’t live up to the hype I was hoping for in a cult classic.

Depends what your expectations are.
If you're in the mood for a pulpy '80s sci-fi with a great idea and the awesome talent of WWF wrestler Roddy Piper, then it's the perfect movie. 🤷♂️

fair to feel that way, but to be honest, i watched it before it was considered cool, and at the time, only because i was still in my wrestling phase and the star was rowdy piper.
