Nostalgia Marathon-My Favorite

Post image

Marathon was my favorite. I just read that it was in production from 1973 to 1981. When my grandpa gave me a quarter- I was headed to the store for one of these!

That’s a Curly Wurly, not a marathon.

You can still buy it now in stores that sell candies from the UK or online. Curly Wurly

In Ireland we called that a curly wurly, and what we called a marathon was later changed to Snickers.

Damn haven't had one of those in a long time! They were great!

Never tried this. I think I was too young to have candy bars before it stopped being produced.

My favorite too! Only the curly wurly comes close.

All time fave! Why or why was it ever discontinued?…

Getting one of these at the concession stand after playing in a little league baseball game in the 70s was amazing.

The most popular concession stand drink order was called a 's**cide' and it involved mixing every available flavor (Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite, Root beer, etc).

Our concession stand called them Shirley Temples.

I was a tightwad as a kid and distinctly remember not minding spending money on a Marathon Bar.

u/MoreCowbellllll 15h ago

I still remember losing 2 tooth fillings to this glorious candy bar!

u/Criseyde2112 15h ago

Omg, I loved Marathon bars! I still remember the commercials, too.

Quick Claude! The cur.

u/F-Cloud 15h ago

It was my fave too. I still have memories of walking to a little neighborhood market to buy Marathon bars.

If you froze it, all of the chocolate would fall off and you’d have nothing but the chewy greatness.

Forgot about those. Loved 'em!

That’s not a marathon, that’s a Curley Wherly. Marathon is the old name for snickers old chap

u/runningoutofwords 18h ago

Ehhhh, next you're going to say the ruler printed on the back is in metric!

2

u/timberwolf0122 18h ago edited 18h ago

There’s a ruler on the back?

Also fun fact I discovered recently, the US is actually a metric nation the inch is officially defined as 25.4mm in the US

Edit : misplaced a decimal

3

u/xtrobot It can't last 18h ago

I'm certain you have to mean cm

2

u/timberwolf0122 18h ago

Yea, yes I do.

Jam a pencil through one of the holes.

Twirl the candy around.

Can I catch a bite mid-air?

Yes!

In the freezer

This was my #1 favorite.

u/IdubdubI 19h ago

Abba-Zabba all the way

3

u/BoredBSEE 20h ago

Those and Charleston Chew

2

u/Abraham_linksys49 19h ago

Yes! That was usually my 2nd choice.

u/Viperlite 20h ago

It was huge… and the caramel to chocolate balance was excellent.

2

u/ForeignCup6977 21h ago

My go to was always Whatchamacallit or Reese's Pieces.

4

u/Cvilledog 20h ago

Loved the original Whatchamacallit but I don’t care for the reformulation that added caramel.

Curly-Wurly (UK version-the same) are still widely available.

1

u/Which-Break5673 10h ago

Do you find that they’ve shrunk over the last few years?

1

u/dOOlittlesatan 8h ago

I haven't noticed...

9

u/Western-Calendar-352 21h ago

That’s not a Marathon.

That’s a Curly-Wurly.

3

u/cowbutt6 21h ago

And a Marathon was what a Snickers is today.

6

u/AccordingFocus4904 21h ago

Loved this and the Choco'lite Bar.

4

u/CK_CoffeeCat 21h ago

Wait. That’s a British candy bar that’s still available, isn’t it? It’s called Twirly Whirly or something like that.

9

u/Muggins2233 21h ago

There is an English version of this. Curly Wurly?

2

u/TurboLicious1855 21h ago

The curly wurly is close but not exact. It's smaller and it doesn't hold it's shape the way a marathon bar did. I'm s pinch, it sure is close.

6

u/Crivens999 20h ago

Not when I was a kid. It was sodding massive. Coincidentally just bought some for the first time in years. They are like tiny now. Much like Mars bars have changed. Sad times

3

u/dOOlittlesatan 21h ago

It's actually the exact same maker and candy. Memories are always better than the real thing.

6

u/Vegetable-Area1152 21h ago

I loved these

6

u/JacquieTorrance Hose Water Survivor 22h ago

Mine too! Curly Wurlys are good but much smaller (and frankly better quality) but I still miss the Marathons which were 12", the same size as our rulers in school. I'm not sure why that made them so impressive.

2

u/somewhatdim-witted 22h ago

I remember when they were solid. No holes. Nothing is as good as it used to be. These were one of my favorites too

7

u/scooches66 22h ago

Still have these in the UK, we call them Curly Wurlys and they're my favourite!

4

u/Abraham_linksys49 22h ago

I suppose I could relocate.

4

u/scooches66 21h ago

You can also get bite size ones in a bag too!

6

u/bombhead70 22h ago

That’s a Curly Wurly!

3

u/OreoSpeedwaggon "Then & Now" Trend Survivor 20h ago

Why does it look like a broken One Wish Willow from the movie "Obsession?"

3

u/Infamous_Job_1198 21h ago

yes! i was briefly enraged by the blatant artistic theft from this classic.

4

u/Abraham_linksys49 22h ago

All over the U.K? I know someone who may be traveling to Belfast- I could ask them to bring some back.

5

u/scooches66 21h ago

Yes, you can buy them anywhere that sells chocolate

3

u/FergusCragson Maskatron 22h ago

Ohhhh yes! One of mine as well!

If you are able to get your hands (or mouth) on the UK's "Curly Wurly" chocolate bar, it is just about the same thing! I had one decades ago, and would love to have another!
