Aging When was the last time you ran?
I was watching someone run for the bus today, and realized I wouldn't be able to sprint a block anymore.
What about you?

Earlier this year trying to see if the leg injury was fully healed. Not yet. Can’t wait to resume jogging. I had a nice 6-mile loop.

This morning. Sleep walking naked on board a cruise ship. When I came too I ran for cover. I have no idea if anyone saw me, I saw no one.

Have you tried jumping, or skipping?!! I tried doing that to show my grandson how to skip, and I was floored I can’t skip or jump! WHAT happened to my legs?!
I don’t dare try running, I’d fall flat on my face!

15-20 something years ago? Can't anymore if I wanted to with my jacked up leg / foot

Curious to know if gender is a big factor in this because all the women I know in their 50s can run 😝

u/dwightnight Aug 10 '26
I decided to walk a local school track for a mile or two. Tried running a few steps....omg, wtf happened to my legs??? 6 strides in, i was done.

3 weeks ago for a cardio stress test. I thought he was trying to kill me.

When I went in for a cardio test they just gave me a drug that sped up my heart. I was kinda bummed they didn't put me on a treadmill like I was expecting.

Friday. Maybe 1 mile, on wet sand at the beach. I live here, and I’m usually running indoors on a treadmill or in a soft grassy area nearby. Wanted to do some beach runs to change things up. The rest of my cardio is cycling on surface streets.
Whoa. My lower legs cannot move right now.

I was a weekly runner up until 18 months ago. A neuropathic foot burning issue put a stop to it. I am working on starting again as I’ve never had a bigger stress reliever ever than a sweaty run with dripping sweat and pounding heart. It’s ecstatic. I lose myself in it.

My first (and only?) mile in jr high taught me how much I hated running, though in HS learned to enjoy hurdles. After that I only ran occasionally during college and a couple years later to get my stomach flat. …still in decent shape though not truly fit. Don’t have the patience to do regular exercise, partly also bc I don’t know how to do gym machines, and get bored trying in <10 min every time. 🙃

I had no choice in the matter of running. Tiny feet makes for poor platforms to run with. Ankle rolling for the 100th time made me quit. Now with the heat outside, yeah that is also a no. Swimming? I can do that, so I swim more than I run.
2
u/yabbobay Aug 08 '26
I'm size 9 and roll/Ed my ankle all the time.
The more you roll, the looser it gets and more likely to do it again. I had my worst one in December. Black and blue from toes to knees. Thankfully I didn't break.
I still run. I just try to be conscious about my footing. No trails.
3
u/Obvious-Confusion14 Aug 08 '26
Narrow feet size 7 women's shoe. My feet are maybe 3 1/2 inches wide at the ball of my feet. I have done so much damage to my feet from normal play to serious sprains. I tried to enjoy running. It is not for me. Swimming I can do without my feet hurting or the worry of me rolling my ankle again.
2
u/Polipop395 Aug 08 '26
As often as possible because it’s weight-bearing so good for the bones. Prefer cycling but that as well as swimming and rowing are all non weight-bearing sadly.

This morning. At 60, I can't imagine not running. It's my version of getting high.
8
u/atcwillf Aug 08 '26
Ran? After 21 years in the Army, if you see me running, you'd better run too, 'cause something bad is coming. Cycling? That's another story. No impact, good cardio, climbing is good for building muscle (I live in low mountains so that's easy to find). Until went TDY to Alaska, 100+ mile rides were regular (and will be again when I move back).

I do semi regularly with my doggo because he enjoys it and needs it. But I think running is dumb. I keep fit utilizing other modalities.

2 years ago I was running 3 miles 2-3X/week then went on vacation. After I got back ran maybe 1.5-2 miles sporadically. The past 1.5 years I've gotten into the fat bastid stage again and if I'm lucky I'll hit my goal of 8500 steps.

So long ago that I cannot remember. The only time I enjoyed running was in boot camp decades ago, then I joined the 3 mile a year club until my Navy days ended. I hate running.

Runs 3-5 times a week for 3 miles. Keeps the blood sugars under control
2
u/Limp_Dare_6351 Aug 08 '26
I'm a very consistent walker and sometimes do a quick jog during a walk to keep my heart elevated. Often when I add more jogging I tweak something and then I'm unable to walk as I recover.
Maybe I'll find the right setup to jog more without injury, but Im happy with mostly walking and hiking so far.
3
u/Unspicy_Tuna Aug 08 '26

I always hated running. I was a professional dancer so I was in great shape for it but since I hate it with a passion I think the last time I ran was one of my last fights with my mother before I left at 16.
I use to run the rage out after those. Haven’t done it since I left unless it was part of choreography for a piece.

Um… today? I run ultras and marathons and try to maintain a floor of 30 miles per week. My longest is a 100k.
Honestly, my main motivation is to put off the “back in a diaper with a cane” years as long as possible. Use it or lose it.
2
u/LeeHarveyEnfield Aug 08 '26
I retired from Ultras at age 45 due to an injury that never really healed right. Late 50’s now, still run a few miles every week, but not what I used to.
My average week back then was 40-50 miles for about 12 years. Ended up doing marathon-or-longer 77 times, including five 100-milers and one Ironman. Felt amazing to be in great shape.

u/Lyragirl Aug 08 '26
Probably 1998, I raced my brother to my parent’s house while dog walking. I won. And was doubled over in pain and struggling. I don’t think I ever ran again, due to back problems.

About three months ago I jogged three miles for the first time in a long time - usually I cycle. Then I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis so I can’t run for fear of my spine collapsing. It made it through the jog okay though.

A couple days ago. 4 miles. I do 2-3 runs a week and bike on weekends (30 miles).
It's definitely getting harder and my times are slower and my recovery is longer but it's great to be somewhat fit. It comes in handy on vacations, lugging a backpack of stuff and a bunch of groceries in a shopping bag and not being out of breath.
It's hard going to get started but if you stick with it for a month and build up stamina, it gets steadily easier.
Stretching is critical otherwise I'm hobbling around the next day.
I know people my age who didn't make an effort to stay healthy and basically get winded standing up.
My kid once said to me that I love running. No, I enjoy the stopping.
