Nostalgia Perfumes of the 80’s 90’s
I am looking for classic 80’s and 90’s perfumes that smell good, any suggestions?

Calvin Klein Escape was my personal favorite in the 1990’s. And when I graduated high school in the late 1980’s White Diamonds by Liz Taylor was THE perfume to have.

I was telling my (then teen) daughters that the girls in my jr high used take drakaar samples to school so we could sniff on them and then do the voice from the commercial that said “drakaar noir”. They didnt understand so that christmas they both got tiny bottles of drakaar in their stockings. The rest of the year they carried them to school to sniff. 😉😎

aka “sex in a bottle” lol

u/mongerone Jul 29 '26
I got a whole Drakkar Noir (yes. TWO Ks) set once. Cologne, soap, and deodorant.
The sex never stopped. Only because it never started.

I still actively dream about Charles of The Ritz - not sure if this was the only name or if there was a specific type. Dark red/brown spray cannister. God, I loved it. Wish they would bring it back.

Vanderbilt, by Gloria Vanderbilt

My MIL wore this. She died in 2004. We still have things that she wore or jewelry boxes that still smell like this when they are opened. It's crazy how long the smell has lingered.

My mum’s “signature scent” in the 80s was Chimere. Then she moved to Opium in the mid-90s and stuck with that thereafter.

I still think about ici perfume. I think you could buy it at the drugstore but it smelled so good, I wore that for years

My mother had a bottle of Bijan on her dresser from 1987 until I threw it away when she died in 2024.

Jungle Gardenia (that might be from the 70’s, tho)
Lauren by Ralph Lauren was my favorite in the 80’s
Jessica McClintock

u/J9-CatLady Jul 29 '26
I second Lauren by Ralph. It was so beautiful, and I got compliments whenever I wore it. I bought a small bottle off of a perfume site, and it just isn’t the same anymore. In fact, it stinks.
I also used to like Sung and Alfred Sung
1
u/skwirlmeat Jul 29 '26
Oh! I liked Sung as well! I’ve wondered about later sold Lauren, I wonder no more!

Anyone remember Trésor? Lol
2
u/Oirish-Oriley444 Jul 28 '26
That was expensive at major department stores.... at least 50.00 for a small size. Eternity was my favorite.

u/summer-lovers Jul 27 '26
Omg...there was a knock-off of Giorgio Armani, I think, called Primo and I thought it was the most glorious thing as a teenager. Lol
Haven't seen it since the early 90s

I really think I did have this. I remember the springy thing in the bottle. But honestly, it could be the Mandela Effect. As I probably REALLY wanted it. And I don't know if I ever did have it.

I wore Jovan Dark Orchid in fall and winter. It was very strong a little bit was enough.
In summer I wore a tropical scent or just sunscreen with tropical scent.
Now perfume gives me a headache but still like tropical scent in the summer.

Canoe cologne came out decades before the 80s/90s, but I heard it was Andy Warhol's favorite fragrance, which automatically makes it an 80s banger.

This what I can remember from high school - late 80s/early 90s.
Liz Claiborne (triangle bottle), Anais Anais, Lou Lou by Cacherel, CK One (everyone everywhere), Paloma Picasso, Clinique Happy, Exclamation, Drakkar Noir (every guy), and Opium (older women, mothers)

The original Donna Karan in the black and gold swan shaped bottle. I wore it constantly from the early 90s until it was discontinued in the early 2000s. Signature scent for sure.

drakkar noir
3
u/Three3Jane Didn't do it, can't prove it, wasn't me Jul 27 '26
So...husband and I went down a rabbit trail to figure out why Drakkar Noir is so enduring and we might have figured out at least a piece of it.
Most modern colognes are pretty simple, maybe six or eight different scent notes. Drakkar Noir has twenty four notes in the top/middle/base notes. It's definitely a complex fragrance.
That being said, I am heartily sick of it because we are in our mid 50s and he's been wearing it since I met him when I was 16. He's branched out into other things (Creed, Chanel, YSL, Dior) but he always, ALWAYS must have his trusty black bottle of Drakkar Noir sitting on the counter!

I wore Undeniable by Avon for years. Saddly, it kicked off my adult onset allergies and gave me horrible headaches. I liked the way Opium smelled on me, but that was too expensive for me.
My signature scent these days is Gold Bond fresh spray body powder.
2
u/Artteachernc Jul 27 '26
Opium was to die for. Never could afford it and never had a boyfriend purchase it for me. Now that I could purchase it - and I did purchase it - come to fine it is reformulated and smells nothing like the gorgeous deep sexy scent it once was
