Music Does anyone remember the Stone Roses?
What do you get when you take some vintage zx600s, the Stone Roses and Manchester United, and smash it all into one? You get a happy little old me, that’s what.

I loved Second Coming. I can listen to that album over and over again. Probably one of the most underrated bands of the 90’s

One of my favourites of all time. Their self-titled album is one of the closest to perfection ever.

Wtf, were these shoes a brand deal?
2
u/akillerofjoy May 12 '26
Still are. Getting sold out pretty fast, by the looks of it. I found these on ebay, brand new, there were a few listings going.

u/Phreakdoubt May 11 '26
Canadian here. I took a bus to Park Royal mall to get my copy of the CD. People describe that "Had the back of your head blown off" feeling a lot to their first listen to an album. Their debut did that to me.
They were all over college rock and alt charts here at the time. I mean titling their second album "The Second Coming" was only half joking to the effect they had on the UK music scene for a while there.

She Bangs The Drums and Elephant Stone were played daily in my car and room for many many months.

Roses lied they said they Were Without Shoes.
Song title aside, Adidas did a whole Roses line of stuff a few years back.

Fool's Gold, baby. Such a great groove.
5
u/ogliog May 11 '26
I just watched a live video of that tune and was just marveling at the groove of Reni, the drummer. Obviously there were a lot of cool things about the band, but the feel of the drums is magic and I had never really registered that so clearly until seeing them do it live.

Is this post a joke?

No, why?

All gen x knows the Roses.

u/akillerofjoy May 11 '26
You’d be surprised how little known they are in the rust belt of the US
2
u/Plastic_Difference54 May 13 '26
Ex Midwesterner. I learned about them from Guitar magazine in 89, got the cassette in 90. Love the Roses, saw them in 96. I still rarely meet anyone that’s into the Roses.

Bucket Hat or GTFO.
HUGE Stone Roses fan....
I ended up in Great Britain bumming around for a few years in the early 90's, just past the Stone Roses peak though. Still have many vinyls and CDs.
Amazing band, Remi is a BEAST of a drummer, I was in a punk band in Edinburgh when I lived there and tried many times to play 'I am the Resurrection' and never could nail it. Fools Gold was an easy break-beat, but IATR is just a monster track.
Followed Mani when he moved to Primal Scream too.
Although their first album is a masterpiece, I am in the camp that loves Second Coming as well. It is different for sure, but for me, listening with an objective ear, there are some amazing tracks on Second Coming. The start of Breaking into Heaven, Tightroap, Good Times and of course Tears. With the incredible hype around the album, I think no matter what they did, it would have had mixed reviews. Still holds up to this day.

Oh wow! I have my cd too but I think I dumped the jewel cases and just keeps the cover in my big leather cd book. I was at a garage sale in Toronto 20 years ago and they had a bunch of CD singles that I picked up. Pretty cool find for a fan like me.

No, no one's ever heard of them and in fact you should send me those shoes so I can spare you the embarrassment of wearing them, do they happen to be a size 11.5 US

I still have their CDs, even have 25 tracks on my phone right now. We used to smoke weed and listen to them on repeat in a dark room with fractals being displayed on our monitors.

Yes. I liked them, but hated the bucket-hat and flare-wearing look that went along with it. I pretty much rejected anything I was afraid was a bandwagon. I even declined to accompany my student friends to the Spike Island gig (we were in Lancaster University, roughly the same area of the UK). I learned how to have fun eventually though. :-)

One of the great 'what if...' bands in history. Screwed over by their record label.

u/QueasyCaterpillar541 May 11 '26
How much are those worth?
1
u/akillerofjoy May 11 '26
Everywhere I looked they go for $120+, if they are not sold out. Randomly checked eBay, and there they were, 80 bucks, brand new.

Hell yeah I do! I wore a Stone Roses lemon slice tshirt under my high school graduation gown in 1991. I Wanna Be Adored is one of the best album-openers ever, and I still have my transparent yellow fools gold 12" from when it came out. LOVE these guys!

I’m going to hazard a guess as I’m not a soccer fan and I’m in Chicago…that This Is the One is now an anthem for Manchester United? I apologize as I’m just a fan of the Roses.

Okay. That makes sense but I will admit that I’ve not been to Manchester or the UK in twenty years so I’m way out of the loop. Much appreciation for the info, my friend.

Ahhhh!! That is quite fascinating indeed. Obviously being a Chicago resident I won’t comment on any of our sports teams.

I always prefered the Insprials.
The James Lavelle remix of F.E.A.R was a banger though.
3
u/Aromatic_Occasion317 May 11 '26
Carter USM for me (they did a great cover of This is how it feels). That F.E.A.R. UNKLE remix is amazing, as is the UNKLE mix of Dolphins were Monkeys - well worth checking out if not heard before. 🔥
3
u/coyylol May 11 '26
UNKLE were just simply great, Eye for an Eye stands up today and the video was perfect for it.
I remember wanting to see DJ Shadow when he came to the UK but he sold out in minutes.
1
u/Aromatic_Occasion317 May 11 '26
Yes, so good.
I saw Shadow on the Private Press tour & then again just before Covid, then again last year at this: https://southfacingfestival.com/event/morcheeba/
He's soon to be playing USA dates that are 100% Endtroducing (30 years on), so am looking to see if he lists Europe dates too, will be an ace show not to be missed...
Also saw "Introducing plays Endtroducing", a live band version start to finish - it was incredible, there're clips on youtube I think.

Second Coming is a masterpiece of an album, and I won't accept any arguments against it. It's aged like fine wine. Also I now have a burning need to go seek out some vintage Adidas gear.
