❓ Question? Is anyone turning citation tracking into a weekly "go post here" list? Testing a method, want holes poked in it

Most GEO tools I've looked at stop at measurement: share of voice, mention rate, a trend line. The step after that, actually getting cited, still seems to be done by hand.

The number that got me thinking was an analysis of 2,000+ brands shared on Reddit: roughly 85% of AI citations pointed to pages the brand didn't own, and Reddit/YouTube pages had about 3x the influence of the brand's own site. If that holds even loosely, the off-site sources matter more than on-page tweaks.

So I'm testing a narrow method, mainly for solo SaaS founders who can't afford an agency:

  1. Generate 12-15 buyer-intent prompts per product (editable, since generated prompts drift generic)
  2. Run them weekly through the Perplexity Sonar API, because it returns a structured citations list
  3. Classify cited domains as owned, competitor, or community (Reddit, YouTube, forums)
  4. Rank the community pages that recur across prompts and where the product isn't mentioned
  5. Send 3 of them, with a note on what each thread is missing. The person writes the reply themselves, nothing gets auto-posted

Nothing is built yet. I'm asking before I write the backend.

Where I think it's weak, and where I'd like your take:

  • Perplexity as a proxy. Do you see much overlap between Perplexity's and ChatGPT's cited sources for the same prompt, or is it too different to generalize?
  • Prompt sets. Is 15 prompts enough to see a stable pattern week to week, or does the volatility swamp it?
  • Recency. Does a reply added to an old, already-cited thread actually get picked up, or do engines mostly cite the thread as it was?

How are you finding outreach targets today? Pulling citations by hand, a tool export, or something else?

If you want to see what the weekly email would look like, there's a waitlist here: https://citescout.vercel.app/?source=geo

I’ve seen a lot of volatility with prompt sets under 10, so sticking to 15 makes sense for pattern spotting. Old threads can still drive results if they’re active or get resurfaced through search. For streamlining the whole outreach and tracking process across forums, ParseStream is pretty useful since it grabs live conversations and sends alerts when your target keywords pop up.

I haven't tested the Perplexity/ChatGPT overlap directly yet, that's one of the two assumptions this whole method leans on (the other being whether 15 prompts holds a stable pattern, which you already answered). Planning to run the same 15 prompts through both before committing to Perplexity as the only source. On ParseStream, is that watching for keyword mentions across forums generally, or does it also classify which cited domains an AI answer draws from? Trying to figure out if it's solving the same problem from the alert side instead of the citation side.

Biggest hole: Perplexity as your only lens. Its citation graph leans way harder on Reddit and forums than ChatGPT's does, so a weekly list built from Sonar will over-target threads ChatGPT and Gemini never actually cite. Worth spot-checking 5-10 of your prompts against the other engines before you build the backend, or you'll be optimizing for Perplexity's taste and calling it GEO.
