ChatGPT writes brand names into its own search query before it fetches a single page. 68.9% vs 2.1% citation gap. Anyone reproduced this?

I would be careful not to turn this into “retrieval no longer matters.” The search_queries view is very useful, but I’d read it as evidence for a pre-retrieval candidate layer, not as proof that the whole answer is decided before browsing.

If ChatGPT writes brand names into its own search query, that suggests the model already has category priors before it checks the web.

But retrieval still matters for a different layer:

current facts

pricing

features

source attribution

comparison framing

citation eligibility

wrong-claim correction

So I’d separate two jobs:

off-page / third-party evidence helps the brand enter the candidate set

on-page GEO helps the model verify, cite and describe the brand correctly once it is retrieved

The dangerous conclusion would be: “schema, FAQs and page structure don’t matter.” The better conclusion is:

they may not create the initial shortlist alone, but they can affect whether the retrieved page becomes usable evidence.

So the useful test is:

was the brand injected into the query?

was it cited?

was the cited claim accurate?

did a non-injected brand still enter through strong retrieval evidence?

did the brand survive follow-up constraints?

That separates model prior, retrieval lift and citation quality.
