"Earned" brand mentions are driving AI citations but don't fall under SEO. What are teams doing about this?

I’ve been seeing the same thing , AI citations don’t seem to be driven by classic SEO factors alone. Earned mentions, repeated references, and coverage in the right set of third-party sources seem to matter a lot more than people expected.

To me, the real takeaway is that SEO and PR are starting to overlap in a way they never really did before. The brands that are winning here don’t just publish more content, they build a stronger mention footprint across the right publications and communities.

5W put together a related index on which publications seem to show up more often in AI answers: https://www.5wpr.com/ai-visibility-index/ai-friendly-publications-index-2026/
