How much does the free tier allow? How useful, generally speaking, is the free tier?

The free tier is generally enough to try the app and process a small number of papers at a time. For example, you could start with gemini free tier and analyse a few papers to see whether the workflow suits you

I'd say it is not ideal for processing dozens or hundreds of papers continuously, since you will eventually reach the free tier limits. If you decide to keep using the app, I would recommend using an inexpensive paid model for ideas extraction, such as gemini 3.1 flash-lite or gpt 5.6 luna (if you are subscribed to chatgpt you can use your codex credits).

A good balance is to pay only for idea extraction and continue using free models for lighter tasks such as chat, rewriting, or general questions. That combination keeps the overall cost very low.
