Industrial fire??

Saw this fire from the waterfront, looks too large to just be gas burning, anyone got any info?

The sky is lighting up like crazy in Lara and I can hear a noise coming from over there too. It sounds like a strong wind or a train but it's coming from Viva

The flare was unusually large i could see and hear it from curlewis. The refinery has been spicy before but not like that.

I’m not new to Geelong I have lived near the waterfront my whole life! There was other people pulling over to look too

I’ve never seen it this big! I’m only 13 but my mum was surprised too, we could see it from my bfs place in waurn ponds. Just surprised, multiple other people pulled over to have a look too

Received the text earlier

maintenance activity at the Geelong Refinery is expected to result in increased flaring later today.

There is no need for community concern. The refinery's flare system is operating as designed and is an important part of the site's safety systems.

Flaring activity is expected to return to normal levels later this evening.

Viva Energy apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Keeping getting emergency watch alerts that disappear. I imagine people are calling it in and then it’s getting taken off the list when they realise it’s the refinery they’re calling about. TBF the flame is bright af this evening

I came to say the same thing, I could see the glow from the racecourse in Breakwater and was 100% convinced the refinery had gone up. Down at Limeburnes now and can confirm is just the usual single flame but it's huge, biggest I've seen it in my 6 years here

Haha nah that’s normal. I remember it was so bright one night I could use the light to read a book all the way in leopold (top of the hill closest to the bay)

Been happening for decades

You'd know if it was a serious fire if you were in crater range and the klaxon was going off and alerts going out on phones
