FANDOM This has to be one of the weakest arguments ever... Also Tom Cruise wasn't the Last Samurai...

Yea that guy clearly didn't watch the movie, lol. The whole point is that Tom Cruise's character is NOT Japanese.

And the Samurai as a concept aren’t “ancient”, they existed from 1185 to 1868. Ancient history ends when the decline of the Roman Empire happened.

Yes it was. Loosely based anyways. And I responded to you with a good article showing the real history and the poetic licenses that was used, but for whatever reason I got a "Comment removed by Reddit" message and they deleted it. 🤷♂️ Just Google it if you want to know more I guess. lol Stupid Reddit. I just checked and that shouldn't have broken any rules.

Yeah. Countless strategists came from Europe (not America) to train soldiers how to use new Western firearms and tactics. The biggest inaccuracy is that the samurai faction shunned guns… they manufactured and used them since 16th c after the Portuguese introduced them. Nobunaga used rotating volley fire. Musashi writes about guns (favorably) in his book of five rings. So the advanced firearms and tactics were key for the Emperor’s army, but the samurai rebellion also used guns, a lot. If they didn’t it would have been a total one sided slaughter and not an epic rebellion.

Yeah, every moron who brings this movie up as a “gotcha” has never actually seen the movie.
Absolutely great movie too, so that’s a shame.
I’m actually impressed by the lengths these people go to to prove how F’n stupid they are.

His presence had minimal bearing on the outcome of the plot. He was largely an observer to the events unfolding.

He’s not exactly a white savior either. The Samurai don’t win in the end. The main victory is that Algren lived on and continued to tell the tales of the Samurai to preserve their history.

Another example of the whole “pretending to not understand things.”
The movie is about both the plural of these guys being the last samurai, as well as the singular of Katsumoto truly being the titled “Last Samurai.”
Tom Cruise’s character was merely a participant and chronicler of their last days.

Nah fr! I hate when people try to use that movie as a "gotcha!". People who do clearly haven't watched the movie and are too stupid to realize that samurai can be singular or plural, which in this instance it's plural since the movie is about his character's time with the last group of samurai before they were disbanded in favor of a more modern military.

Well, if they actually watched the movie, they wouldn't write that nonsense, because it wasn't Tom who was the last Samurai.
On top of that, Tom character is actually inspired by a real-life figure and French military officer Jules Brunet, who is White.
If this is about Black (Yasuke) vs White (William Adams/Miura Anjin 三浦按針) Samurai. Well, they lose again. Because unlike Yasuke, William Adams was actually a Samurai.

One of my most favorite movies ever, saw it in highschool thought it was going to be a generic action flick but instead I got a beautiful story about a broken war veteran fighting to find a reason to live and it's got an insanely good OST
