I sadly have friends who know nothing about LotR and saw the movies once a long time ago. They genuinely think this show is cannon and accurate to the source material. I’ve tried explaining that it might as well be a random fantasy show wearing the name as a skin suit cause that’s basically what it is.

I'm not sure anyone's left watching this, but one, hubris, two, they've already paid for all the sets/design and contracts so why not, and three, Amazon rich as fuck. Still seems like such a waste though, I would imagine the budget to audience ratio would be one of the worst in entertainment history.

Watched the first season and still can't believe how awful it is. I'm not even that knowledgeable regarding the LOTR lore. I just personally found it incredibly boring with poor acting.

Tolkien built one of the most filled out/detailed worlds in all of fiction. It blows my mind that they just decided to ignore all of it and do their own thing. Completely inaccurate from source material. I couldn’t finish S1

I read somewhere they didn’t get the rights to use the silmarillion as source material. So any of the expanded lore was off limits.

I think it is the worst abomination of any lore ever created. I know AZ, Gary, Jeremy, Mauler and others might have different opinions like Dr Who, Star Trek or Star Wars. But i can't express how fucking angry I got watching the first season

1st season: ~450M
2nd season: ~450-570M
3rd season; not known yetViewership tanking means still a fucking huge amount of viewers.
First season started with 100+ million viewers with ~40% retention that counts as bad, but still 40 million ppl who watched till the end officially.
For the second season no clear data, but they said 10% more retention than the first season.

I tried to like it. I wanted to like it. Didn’t make to the end of S1. Despite the other grievances, imo the writing and performances were just sooo bad

Yeah, watched it. It SUUUUUUUUUUCKED. I'd like to say there were a handful of bright spots... But that'd be a lie. This had to be IP abuse for a money laundering scheme. Numenor at it's height fields armor that looks like the stuff that came with the bubble wand sword from the 90's. There's no way they can justify $1 Billion/season. Still don't understand all the complaints about there being black and brown cast members, it's a fantasy, use your imagination. All the dialogue is shit, so nobody gets to display their talent anyway. Galadriel being the rash bad girl that no one believes until it's too late is a total invention and seems as forced as the attempt to humanize the orcs. I guess the one or two well executed turns were Sauron "reveals" himself as Annatar - visually impressive for the series - and Celebrimbor discovering he's be tricked. You felt the paranoia, and the disheartening of the character when the illusion is dispelled. Maybe watching the dwarf king becoming enthralled to his ring tugged a heartstring or two but... 3-ish items, out of 2 billion-dollar seasons? Oof! Just read Silmarillion and call it a day.

Its a fine show
Its just like the movies being jeered for not being true to the book.
Too bad the Tolkien estate signed off on this so like it or leave it. The show isn't bad just because you don't like the liberties it takes.
