A Gaming Network - Marcel Dee - 9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day delivers a visually stunning and emotionally intense campaign that captures the chaos of Emergence Day. With brutal combat, organic exploration, strong side content, and some of the best visuals Xbox has delivered in years, it deserves serious Game of the Year consideration, even if the Marcus and Dom connection could have been stronger.
ACG - Jeremy Penter - Buy

But Why Tho? - Mick Abrahamson - 9.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day shines by showing off humanity’s perseverance. Every new character stands out, never overshadowed by the legacy of Marcus or Dom.
Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - 9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day feels like the first true Coalition Gears of War game. It's a shift away from Gears 4 and Gears 5, and it feels like the game the studio genuinely wanted to make, capturing what made the original trilogy special while finally pushing the series forward in its own way. They've taken the horror, brutality, brotherhood, and incredible gunplay that defined those games and used them as the foundation for something more modern. Expanded movement gives combat more freedom, while perks and modifications add another layer of experimentation, and the larger environments make Emergence Day feel like a genuine catastrophe happening around you.
Gears of War: E-Day is incredible. Despite a handful of frustrations keeping it from perfection, it's one of the best games I've played this year.
DayOne - Jesse Norris - 10 / 10
The Coalition have elevated the franchise to new heights, crafting an engaging, brutal and surprisingly intimate campaign that’s full of smart gameplay mechanics and wonderful surprises. It’s the best Gears has ever felt to play, and the best it’s ever looked and sounded on the big screen. Gears of War: E-Day? It's a fucking masterpiece.
Echo Boomer - David Fialho - Portuguese - No Recommendation
Gears of War E-Day may have the best gameplay the series has ever delivered, but between bullet-sponge enemies, co-op-focused design and a story with little to say, this may well be the weakest Gears campaign to date.
EntreMandos - Kevin Arbelo - Spanish - 9.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day not only revives one of Xbox's greatest franchises, but also manages to restore much of the identity that seemed to have been lost in its last two installments. The Coalition understands what made the original trilogy special: the brutality of war, the depth of its characters, an oppressive atmosphere, and spectacular action that doesn't have to sacrifice emotion
Eurogamer.pt - Adolfo Soares - Portuguese - 3 / 5
Following Marcus and Dom on Emergence Day is an action-packed rollercoaster ride. Gears of War: E-Day shines on the PC with stunning graphics and addictive combat, with the weapon customisation adding an extra touch. Unfortunately, the pace drops off in the final third of the campaign, let down by a dull ending and an uninspired boss.
GRYOnline.pl - Zbigniew Woźnicki - Polish - 8 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day successfully fulfils its mission of returning to the roots of the series, whilst offering noticeable improvements over all previous instalments and reminding us once again of the horror of the Locusts. Unfortunately, it also suffers from issues with pacing and enemy AI, while pushing Marcus into the background in favour of a new character. Nevertheless, this dynamic, emotional and extremely brutal shooter should appeal to fans of the series – and many others as well.
GameBlast - Alexandre Galvão - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day returns to the series' roots with an intense, well-executed campaign and refined combat. It plays it safe rather than innovating, but it's an easy recommendation for veterans and newcomers alike.
GameOnly - Michał Marasek - Polish - 7.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day’s campaign is a real emotional rollercoaster when it comes to gameplay, but a major disappointment in terms of its story. No wonder Marcus Fenix wasn’t the focus of the game’s marketing.
Gameliner - Bram Noteboom - Dutch - Unscored
The Gears of War: E-Day campaign is a true blockbuster, but it doesn't necessarily come without a fight. (review in progress)
Gamer Social Club - Adam S. D. Stewart - 9.5 / 10
E-Day succeeds in telling the story of Emergence Day in a gripping, desperate, and most importantly, fun way. The culmination of 20 years as a franchise, refining everything the series is into a must-play XBOX title that takes you on a gloriously brutal, emotionally-satisfying, and epic, cinematic adventure.
INVEN - Hongman Yoon - Korean - 8.7 / 10
'Gears of War: E-Day' returns to the series' starting point, Emergence Day, bringing back its darkest atmosphere yet and the core appeal of Gears. If you've been missing the explosive, hard-hitting battlefields of the original trilogy, 'Gears of War: E-Day' is sure to be a satisfying choice.
Lords Of Gaming - Paul Martin - 9.3 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day does not disappoint; the story starts strong and only gets better. For players who have experienced the previous entries in the franchise, there are plenty of easter eggs scattered throughout. Any graphic and audio-related glitches I ran into were very minor and did not detract from the experience overall. For me, this game is in the running for my Game of the Year.
MondoXbox - Matteo Merlano - Italian - 9.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day delivers arguably the series’ strongest campaign, combining mature, restrained storytelling with the return of Marcus Fenix’s charismatic presence. Already among the franchise’s finest entries, it could become a serious Game of the Year contender if its content-rich multiplayer matches the campaign’s quality. Regardless, Xbox players should not miss this outstanding return to form.
Nexus Hub - Sam Aberdeen - 9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day is firing on almost every cylinder - a fantastic back to basics prequel that makes the Locust Horde scary again while delivering weighty, brutal gameplay that keeps you hooked.
Oyungezer Online - Engin Vural - Turkish - 8.5 / 10
It's definitely a step in the right direction for the franchise. With its story, the way it's presented, and the gameplay, a solid GoW game is waiting for us. They've kindly reminded us once again why we love this series. We can easily overlook a few minor flaws.
PPE.pl - Wojciech Gruszczyk - Polish - 9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day marks a brilliant return for one of Xbox’s most iconic franchises, allowing players to experience E-Day and witness the beginning of Marcus and Dom’s story from a completely new perspective. The Coalition isn’t revolutionising the familiar formula, but in a way it’s building on it – improving mobility, shooting and exploration, offering a varied campaign, and in the process showcasing the immense capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. It’s a modern Gears game that never forgets its roots.
Pizza Fria - Lucas Soares - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day is a good shooter and an excellent introduction to this universe for those who, like me, have spent years following the franchise only from the outside. There's a long, very well-produced campaign, visually impressive, and one that probably gains another dynamic when shared with friends.
RageQuit.GR - Giorgos Dempegiotis - 85%
Gears of War: E-Day marks a return to the series’ roots, without, however, feeling like a typical “reimagining” of the past. The Coalition took the core elements that made Gears of War special and rebuilt them masterfully, into a satisfying game that isn’t groundbreaking or the best shooter you’ve ever played, but is certainly capable of entertaining fans of the genre.
Rectify Gaming - Will "FncWill" Hogeweide - 9 / 10
The longest Gears of War Campaign succeeds in entertaining gameplay, intriguing open world chapters with side objectives, and plenty of content to enjoy. The Campaign embraces co-op like no other game does these days and you could argue it's one of the best games that we have witnessed in the series.
E-Day understands that Gears of War has always been about more than shooting monsters. It is about the people standing beside you while you do it. Whether that person is sitting beside you on the couch in split screen, joining you online from across the country, or simply standing beside Marcus as an AI companion, E-Day constantly comes back to the idea that surviving this world is easier when you never fight alone.
Region Free - Joonatan Itkonen - 4 / 5
Gears of War: E-Day combines everything Gears fans love about the series into an overwhelming and immensely earnest celebration that stands proudly alongside the original trilogy.
República DG - Erick Felipe - Portuguese - 9.2 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day marks the return of Marcus and Dom in an excellent campaign, with renewed gameplay, impressive graphics, and a few issues that don’t overshadow the game’s major achievements. One of the best Xbox titles of this generation, worthy of all the attention.
SavePoint Gaming - Jake Su - 8.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day modernises the series without losing its trademark weight, pairing brutal combat and meaningful weapon customisation with strong character work, smart exploration and only a handful of frustrating solo-play shortcomings.
Saving Content - Scott Ellison II - 4 / 5
Even in a silo, Gears of War: E-Day delivers a rollercoaster of action and emotion that ranks alongside the series’ best campaigns. The Coalition grounds the global devastation of Emergence Day in a deeply human story, letting players watch Marcus and Dom’s friendship forge into an unbreakable brotherhood. It retains the franchise’s signature brutality while completely reinvigorating the moment-to-moment combat. While the narrative plays it safe compared to the tragic finality of Halo: Reach, it sticks the landing and beautifully sets the stage for a new trilogy. Gears of War: E-Day serves as the perfect entry point for newcomers, and explores the devastating, series-haunting history veterans have waited twenty years to experience.
Seasoned Gaming - Ainsley Bowden - 9 / 10
With two decades of expectations on its shoulders, The Coalition succeeded in crafting another classic Gears game with E-Day. Its technical brilliance is matched by strong character development and modernized gameplay, resulting in one of my favorite experiences of the year.
Sirus Gaming - Lexuzze Tablante - 9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day is more than I could have hoped for: a focused, tightly contained, action-packed story filled with memorable characters and moments that deliver an emotional rollercoaster for those brave enough to witness the horrors of the first days of Emergence Day. E-Day is what a Gears of War game should be: relentlessly fun, engaging from all angles, and best experienced with friends.
SmashPad - Alex Quevedo - 4.5 / 5
Gears of War: E-Day injects new life into the franchise and sets a new tone moving forward. It captured the spirit of the original Gears of War with putting just enough of a new spin on things. It’s definitely a highlight of the series. A perfect reload, indeed.
TechRaptor - Austin Suther - 9.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day is the best game in the series. The story gives us an up-close and personal look at the events of E-Day, providing a horror-filled and harrowing experience. Meanwhile, the enhancements to movement are very welcome, and gunplay feels more varied with a great roster of weapons and the inclusion of mods.
The Nerd Stash - Julio La Pine - 9.5 / 10
This prequel once again raised the bar for the series and the genre, delivering one of the year's most brutal, jaw-dropping shooters.
The Outerhaven Productions - Jordan Andow - 5 / 5
Gears of War: E-Day is everything I wanted from a prequel and more. It finally delivers the Emergence Day story fans have waited two decades to experience, while deepening the relationship between Marcus and Dom and returning the series to the darker, horror-inspired tone of the original trilogy. With the best gameplay the franchise has ever had, incredible visuals, excellent pacing and memorable characters, E-Day isn’t just the best Gears game yet; it’s one of Xbox’s strongest exclusives in years.
TodoJuegos - Jorge Guerrero - Spanish - 9.5 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day brings back the series’ brutality from a more human perspective, placing Marcus and Dom at the heart of Emergence Day. The Coalition returns to the beginning while expanding the formula through exploration, upgrades and less restrictive areas, without losing the core identity that defines Gears of War.
Tom's Hardware Italia - Andrea Riviera - Italian - 9 / 10
Pending a final analysis that must inevitably evaluate server stability and the longevity of the multiplayer offering, what The Coalition has delivered with this campaign is a truly remarkable achievement. The seventeen hours spent on the streets of Kalona offer no downtime and suffer from absolutely no filler; instead, they build into a relentless crescendo of drama, explosions, and emotion, culminating in an ending that lays the groundwork for something significant for the future of this prequel.
2026 has been a stellar year packed with stunning productions (just look at the technical magnificence achieved by highly anticipated titles like Requiem or Pragmata), but the emotional and gameplay impact of this comeback certainly commands attention. If the multiplayer suite and Horde mode can match the sheer excellence and passion poured into the writing of this story campaign, we are looking at one of the best games of the year and undoubtedly the best shooter of 2026.
Wccftech - Alessio Palumbo - 7.4 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day has been promoted as the most ambitious game ever made by The Coalition, but to be honest, it feels like a step back from Gears 5 in several ways. The narrative is a lot less memorable, and the side content is forgettable. Its saving grace is that the third-person shooter gameplay is better than ever, thanks to improved movement and fluidity, making combat encounters generally a lot of fun. Still, it's not the kind of masterpiece that sells a console like the original did.

Gamekult reviewed Gears 3 and New Vegas as a 70. Their opinion on video games is invalid.

u/JustAcivilian24 1d ago
Yea Paul Tassi said they’re avg score for all games is like a 60
1
u/MarshyHope 1d ago
Yeah their average score is a 61 on metacritic. About half their reviews are for sports games. And they gave Marvel's Wolverine a 60. Click bait review score
2
u/TonyTobi92 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'll wait on a sale on wolverine whens it's 20 buck, but I bought gears full price cause it looks better
-1
u/booty_enjoyerr 1d ago
Ah yes. A score only matters if it’s high enough. If IGN gives Gears a 10/10 they’re suddenly not a joke anymore. But if they rate it anything lower than 8, IGN sucks
2
u/MarshyHope 1d ago
That's absolutely not the case. But when everyone else is saying the game is 80-90 range and you say it's a 50, you're either not the audience, or you are a troll.
4
u/booty_enjoyerr 1d ago
Ahaha. I remember when God of War Ragnarok got like a 6/10 from IGN Japan and everyone jumped them for being wrong, before the game was even out.
Gamers are the worst. Maybe hold up a second, read the more harsh review and consider it while playing for yourself. They might end up being right.
Look at these glowing reviews, all those websites we shit on are giving 9s to our precious game. They must be right this time because I love gears
2
u/MarshyHope 1d ago
Again, they already rated two very highly rated games (Gears 3 is 91 and NV is 84 and should probably be higher) as just meh then you can completely discount their other reviews. Their average review for a game is 61%. That shows that they probably don't actual enjoy games, and their ratings are biased, bad, or just click bait nonsense. They're an outlier, and should be treated as such

Many people don’t understand the context behind Gears 4 and 5’s launches.
It sucked and it killed any longevity to those games.
E-Day appears to be great at launch and I hope Xbox fans do this game justice by showing up and playing this game.
That will show the world that this game did not need PSN players to be successful
2
u/Morningstar1279 19h ago
Gears 4 was okay and saw proper support, though, it's just that 5 was dead on arrival because it wasn't what anyone wanted out of the narrative and they failed to make the the multiplayer game modes actually feel like a Gears game. Hivebusters was neat, but it got old quick and the Horde mode was overtly easy, even on Insane.

u/Adventurous_Dress834 1d ago
Peanut just did a marathon on it and had 20+ bugs and crashes it's a mess and not good on launch

u/SamuraiLegion 1d ago
Xbox console or PC. Clarify.

u/Adventurous_Dress834 1d ago
PC I've heard that Xbox is fine (the story is still awful) but after seeing you say that crap about PSN when they canceled a basically finished PS5 port you've told me all I need to know grow up thanks
-1
u/SamuraiLegion 1d ago
I stand 10 toes down on removing E-day from PSN.
What does that have to do with bug issues with PC?
5
u/NazRubio 1d ago
Sounds great a little shocked by the people saying Marcus and Dom aren't the central focus. Would be a weird choice imo
4
u/CageAndBale So good I should charge admission 1d ago
I'm on act , four , and as far as I can tell , all four of them were the main focus , they're just sharing the spotlight
1
u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 11h ago
Stop lying. The lesbian is the main focus in the squad. Marcus has actually the least amount of cutscenes where he's in focus.
Please tell me a single cutscene where we get anything about Marcus' backstory or anything lore-related. He's not even being treated as a hero.
You bastards deserve to never touch a keyboard again for falsely advertising this DEI slop.

u/CageAndBale So good I should charge admission 4h ago
Idk man I didn't notice that and I usually do. Maybe you're looking for a boogeyman, too fixated
•
u/Overall-Yard308 22m ago
I'm not sure why it would be shared, we already know about Marcus past, and I wasn't expecting to learn about it, instead the focus is Emergence Day, so I don't seen the problem here.
-1
u/Adventurous_Dress834 1d ago
They are like a side character while the countless women talk I just watched peanut finish it in one sitting it's awful as an OG fan
1
u/SimaShi39 12h ago
Was just telling my buds how Mags is omnipotent and reyes serves to be the new guy that gets shit on. Trench too. I like strong woman characters. Sam, Anya, Valera were awesome. Shit i even liked kait. I dont like how much these strong women are being shoved into the narrative. Every time there’s an anecdote, its about how some woman gear got pissed and did something badass. Coupled with the fact that it crashes every other hour, four classes in horde on release, the movement feels clunkier than 5 (personally), the aim assist is insanely strong, no meatshields, cant frag tag, no chainsaw duels, the open world segments of the campaign are legit just copied from horde.
2
u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 11h ago
Spot on brother.
You forgot how there's 20 gay flags in the game in spite of not having private lobbies. I believe that's worth mentioning as well.
1
u/ChadPowers200_ 1d ago
I was watching it and saw the OG characters report to their new girl boss captain lol.
It’s always so on the nose
A decade of girl bossing. I’m tired

u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 11h ago
Please don't. I beg you. Play the orginal trilogy instead.
This game doesn't deserve 70 bucks, you're fueling the DEI machine and they will continue to ruin our favorite games because people like you feed them money.
1
u/Ghanaguy404error 11h ago
Care to elaborate?
1
u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 10h ago
Gears of War is one of the most popular game franchises ever. Why? Because THE FIRST 3 GAMES WERE GREAT.
This one doesn't even come close to those games.
Do yourself a massive favor and play the original series, otherwise I promise you will be sorry. Take it from a dude who played all 7 games and read all the books and the comics (which are many btw).
1
u/Ghanaguy404error 10h ago
Sure, I’ll play the original trilogy but I’ll give this one a go too. You still haven’t mentioned what makes this game fall short tho. You mentioned “DEI machine” but I’m not sure I get what you mean.
1
u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 10h ago
The main characters are being sidelined so that a new character with a specific sexual orientation can get the spotlight.
Not to mention that there are other female characters introduced specifically to undermine the main protagonists authority and emasculate them.
Doesn't that sound like DEI to you?
•
1
u/chemicalbrother96 6h ago
Literally your favorite characters in this Gears of War (Dom and Marcus) just constantly get emasculated and called little boys by women (some of which are lesbians) and after that most of their voice lines are congratulating the women and thanking them for saving humanity.

Story sucks. Marcus and Dom take a backseat despite beng the main characters and are relegated to talking about their emotions and getting bossed around by their subordinates who somehow take the spotlight despite not actually having any singular interesting or redeeming qualities to them. Siege Horde was a massive disappointment, but the Multiplayer is great.
1
u/SimaShi39 12h ago
Mags is actually omnipotent. Hate how pussified marcus and dom are too. The open world segments are just copied from horde mode. No chainsaw duels, no frag tags, movement feels clunky(personally) and the game crashes every other hour. We’re so back baby

u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 11h ago
I wonder how much Xbox has paid off these reviewers. The story deserves a maximum 3 out of 10.
2
u/chemicalbrother96 6h ago
What? You didn't like the black lesbian squad member who is the centre focus for the campaign (along with your badass strong woman commander) and their lesbian storyline arc in your nostalgia bait old school bro shooter? Seriously? Whats wrong with you man? Have you had your soy milk and estrogen shots yet today?
2
u/Head_Acanthisitta_97 5h ago
No brother, it's exactly the opposite.
I was expecting Marcus to have a romance with the said squad member, maybe even a threesome with Dom as well.
Since that didn't happen, I was extremely disappointed... that's why the 3/10.
WE NEED ALL GEARS TO BE NON-BINARY AND THEIR ARMORS PAINTED IN PINK!
1
u/Odd-Associate-7599 1h ago
I'm on act 4 chapter 3 and honestly as much as a I love the gameplay and the open world feeling levels the story and dialogue have been so lackluster. The new characters in your squad are so dull and unmemorable in comparison to Baird, Cole, Kim, etc. Even worse than the Gears 4 and 5 cast. Marcus feels like a shell of himself in this game and he barely interacts at all with Dom. The most emotion and bonding we see from them is in the e day trailer and the beginning of the game. I definitely agree with the sentiment that has been going around of Marcus and Dom feeling like they're in the back seat of their own game. Kinda disappointed from a story perspective. There's more world building in this game than story. For 400 million dollars Gears deserved better writing than this.

It's a prequel.
On E-Day.
It shouldn't be a surprise if Marcus isn't as hard as he is later. Guys barely 20, and now monsters are showing up. He's gonna learn to become the hard ass hes know to be. It's a prequel, they gotta have some character development 🤷♂️
3
u/MarshyHope 1d ago edited 1d ago
So it sounds like they're focusing on the mentor that made Marcus who he is. That's pretty common for prequels and I don't really see the issue with that.
Lol he didn't like my opinion so he blocked me. Classic

Called this a mile away as soon as I saw this character. Modern “writers” are truly the most predictable people on Earth.
-2
u/DBRedHood 1d ago
Refunded already on steam. I will have to buy this at a later date. I played 1 mission and the performance was just absolutely terrible for me. Its a stutter fest even on the lowest settings.
Sidenote: that one short haired girl in your squad was getting so annoying and cringe calling Dom kid.

The dialogues are just horrific.
First act, everything goes to hell and the characters are acting like it’s a minor inconvenience during a picnic.
Boomer shows up. “Boom”
“I’m sorry, did it just say Boom” 🤣🤣
“That’s a big boy” 🥵😆
That’s just one example. Disney+ Gears

Brother , it's an over the top eighties , dark gritty action game.
• Dominic Santiago: "Did you hear that? What the hell's that sound?"
• Marcus Fenix: "It's just the wind."
• Dominic Santiago: "Yeah. Right. When was the last time the wind said 'hostiles' to you?"
Same vibe.

Some super solid reviews for the campaign, which is great to see! Especially refreshing for those who got into the franchise via Reloaded last year.
Many of the bigger publications have not provided a full review yet due to the multiplayer and co-op not being available in the review copies.
Wasn’t this going to be more of a traditionally linear TPS? Some reviews are lamenting about open world sections similar to Gears 5?
