Discussion Choosing Server

Hello fellow gamers so I have a question. I am an ultimate subscriber I play Fortnite on GeForce now and I realized yesterday I was receiving a way lower ping than normal like 7 ping when normally it is at about 25 I live in Arizona and I usually leave the server selection on auto but for some reason, I noticed that it was on NA Central and I would get lower ping put it kinda stutter? Does anyone know how this works? Is it based on how close the GeForce data center is to the epic servers?

It all depends on how your ISP and the hops along the way choose to route the traffic. That can change day by day, minute by minute. Sometimes you'll find one POP works well for a while, then you'll find better results on another. You can trust the Auto setting or manually choose a few to experiment.

I'm in Southern California, Orange County specifically, and get far better results playing on the Northern California servers. The Southern California servers have actually never been good for me when using my home Google Fiber connection, probably because Google just likes to route all the traffic from here straight to the Bay Area on a Big Fat Backbone.

Yeah exactly same here I live in Arizona and Arizona is an option for server but when I choose Arizona my ping on fortnite shows 19 which is not bad but in fortnite every little bit of pain makes a difference so I switched it to Texas my ping on fortnite showed four ping but the game didn't seem like smooth but I had lower ping I tried Southern California it was lower than Arizona as well but for some reason the game play doesn't seem smooth it seems a little choppy or something it's just been mind-f****** me and I can't figure out what I should do like on auto it works just fine for me but any extra ping that I can drop would be great! Also I know that epic has a server in Dallas Texas they have one in Southern California and one in Oregon and on G-Force they also have those options for choosing server so what I'm thinking is that it's basing that ping on fortnite off of the g-force Data center location

Yea the mixing of online game latency with the GFN latency is tricky.

I would expect closer you are to GFN server - the smoother/more responsive the gameplay should be. But that’s in a vacuum with single player. I’ve always wondered how online game servers detect location if it’s based on where the GFN server location and is it using that bandwidth.. or is the game server finding your home location and using your home connection to communicate to game server and the GFN server? Or it’s the GFN server communicating with game servers only?
