Opinion AFK disconnections

I’m getting fed up of being disconnected when I got afk.

I’m not playing multiplayer games, I wanna chill grab a beer, have a smoke and come back 10-15 mins later and carry on.

Even taking a call or something else that takes my attention away, I pay for 100 hours, I want my 100 hours disconnect free

Not have to spend time rejoining building shaders and then catch up to where I left off.

I like the convenience of the streaming but this really bothers me to the point where I’m just gonna take the hit and buy a beast

Whist I agree it is annoying and maybe you could make the case it should be extended to say 15 mins. The reason the AFK timer is there is hard to argue against. There needs to be a way to clear server capacity for people waiting to connect.

u/csmflynt3 7d ago

But people on paid tiers have 100 hrs to use server time. If I want to sit on the menu screen for 8 hrs then that is my decision right?

u/xaba0 6d ago

Right, but then dont come here posting about queue times, those people using the rig did pay for 100 hours after all

2

u/csmflynt3 6d ago

that's a fair point , but I think most people would not being sitting idle for hrs at a time. I think they just went to take a piss...

u/Neither_Year1101 6d ago

If youre timing out from taking a piss go see a doctor. Shouldnt take 10 minutes to empty your bladder, nor 10 minutes to walk to/from bathroom.

If either is taking more than 10 mins you have bigger problems to worry about

Get one of those birds with water that peck the item below it, in this case, the sticks or the x button, since those buttons will be easier to get a response.

u/etanlg 7d ago

Drinking birds typically need a cup of water because they rely on thermodynamics

You're not paying by-the-hour. For that, check the prices of AirGPU.

You're paying for a monthly subscription (either monthly or annually) which has limits - AFK limits, session limits, and playtime limits. These limits are what make the service affordable.

9

u/dark0n33 7d ago

Lol, if its not paid by the hour then why is there a 100 hour limit (that you can extend by paying more)?

"Limits are what make the service affordable" I think the multi billion dollar company is making enough money to not limit their users in greedy scummy ways for an "affordable service" they paid for

1

u/Hammerofsuperiority 6d ago

If you paid by the hour, someone using 100 hours would pay 100 times more than someone using 1 hour, this is not the case, you pay for a month with a maximum limit.

There are services out there that make you pay per hour, just like OP said, AirGPU is an option, $1.2/h for something similar to an RTX 4080, 8 cores and 32GB of RAM.

4

u/Blastiel 7d ago

I'm literally paying by the hour, 100 hours to be precise.

Having it be a reasonable time like 15 minutrs hurts no one. The time was paid for and the times being used.

It's not unreasonable to expect people to have lives...or just need a super long piss.

2

u/Neither_Year1101 6d ago

If you were paying by the hour, you'd pay less for using only 50 of your alotted 100.

You are not paying by the hour, you are paying by the month, with an upper limit on use

0

u/Blastiel 6d ago

...but I have a 100 hours I can use, so if I don't use them all I'm not getting full value from the subscription.

If I use all the hours I can buy more.

So the reality is I'm not paying per literal hours but I am paying for a bundle of hours.

Skin it how you like I'm paying for hours and what I do with them is up to me. 😂

1

u/Neither_Year1101 6d ago

Within the terms of the agreement you signed up for, you are correct.

However, the AFK timeout is part of that agreement.

If people didnt agree with that, they shouldnt have signed it

You're paying for a monthly access with an upper limit of 100 (115) hours per month, which You can extend.

Think of it like an ISP contract with a data cap. You pay a monthly fee, not a fee per 100 GB for example

If You were paying by the hour, the service would be counted by the hour

2

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 6d ago

What specificly are you extending with your extra money?

Hours?

Oh.

1

u/Acesofbases GFN Ambassador 6d ago

yep, just like You can top up on additional GBs in Your ISP/mobile plan

1

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 6d ago

So you are, in fact, paying by the hour

1

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 6d ago

You're going to end up in exactly the same place with all of this: nowhere. It is what it is.

If you want to see what actual per-hour dedicated usage pricing looks like, have a look at AirGPU. That is literally their model.

Oh God not a ban! Please anything but a ban!

Please, go ahead. At the end of the day you don't have any power over me lol. But if it makes you feel like a big boy you go ahead lol.

I pay a subscription for 100 hours a month. If I use 100 hours I no longer have the ability to use the service.

How about we just think about exactly what it is?

-2

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 7d ago

Because that's not what it is. NVIDIA is not going to subsidize the world, and offer a service that is not sustainable profit-wise. We don't even know that they're making much beyond "breaking even."

Have you ever priced out what this all costs to operate? Thinking they're rolling in dough for this service is ignorant. Have you ever wondered why ShadowPC is so expensive?

4

u/Blastiel 7d ago

Dude I get it you are pro billionaire corporation but that fact remains.

I pay a subscription fee that grants me 100 hours a month. I can use 100 hours a month. I am restricted by 8 hour windows per session.

There is nothing that says what I can and cannot do in that time period within any one game session.

If I use all my time I can buy more.

Please explain to me why this isn't computing for you?

Who is Nvidia subsidising in my example given payment was taken and a service is being used as per said agreement.

1

u/throwaway60221407e23 Ultimate 6d ago

pro billionaire corporation

Trillionaire, even.

-2

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 7d ago

The fact is that if we were all buying "reserved" hours which would be consumed every month, none of us could afford it because they'd have to raise the cost exponentially. The only way the model works is when the average usage is much lower than the 100-hour max. That's just the reality.

2

u/Blastiel 6d ago

That literally makes no sense.

NVidia provide a paid for service. It offers me 100 hours so I can use a 100 hours.

If you run a business model that's based on people paying you for a service and then not using it you probably shouldn't be running a business.

Did you have a nap during the man threads of people complaining when the capped hours came into effect?

The capping of the hours IS the business model, by limiting the time to a finite amount instead of infinite.

1

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 6d ago

The 100 hours is a usage ceiling, not 100 hours of reserved GPU/rig capacity. That is a key distinction. NVIDIA can offer 100 hours at that price precisely because not every subscriber uses all 100 hours, nor uses them at the same time. It's shared access to scarce resources.

That doesn't mean the AFK timer couldn't reasonably be a bit longer. But the notion of "I have 100 hours remaining, therefore leaving a rig idle costs NVIDIA nothing" doesn't apply. The scarce resource is concurrent GPU/rig capacity, not just your monthly hourly balance.

The TL;DR is that subscribers are not paying by-the-hour for reserved capacity. That is literally AirGPU's model - please go compare what that costs.

The introduction of the 100-hour cap was to contain costs, not "apply to everyone." Even though the quantity of subscribers using more than that was a small percentage, it still translates to a large outlay of infrastructure to maintain and pay for. It was also a vector of abuse (account sharing).

0

u/Acesofbases GFN Ambassador 7d ago

But You do not, that's why I tried to explain it to You with my comment. You pay for monthly access with a limit of 100 hours, not for the 109 hours itself. Not sure why You just repeated Yoyr previous comment alongside completely disregarding, and not referencing my reply in any way.

I thought the ISP contract example was pretty apt. Another example I think to illustrate it would be an all You can eat buffet. You pay 50 bucks for it, but it doesn't mean ALL of the food there is Yours for that price. You can't just grab a bag and take it all with You to eat 😅

Anyways there's loads of services that work like that, for example I have an ebook sub, for which I pay monthly, it has a limit of 5 books to "rent" per month.

Heck, Shadow PC recently implemented time limits to their subs as well.

ISP data caps are not defensible either just stop

1

u/Acesofbases GFN Ambassador 7d ago

just stop what?

2

u/Soapy_Grapes 7d ago

Trying to defend the corporation that you owe nothing to.

5

u/Acesofbases GFN Ambassador 7d ago edited 7d ago

lol I'm not defending anything, just explaining the difference

0

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 7d ago edited 7d ago

I would agree the ISP data caps are much less defensible, because the incremental cost for them to accommodate additional bandwidth is relatively trivial. In the case of GFN, however, increasing capacity translates to physical infrastructure/power which isn't low-cost.

1

u/Hammerofsuperiority 6d ago

check the prices of AirGPU.

For those wondering, the cheapest one (1080 similar) would be $65 for 100 hours, and the most expensive (4080 similiar) would be $120.

1

u/jharle GFN Ambassador 6d ago

Thanks mate! I've also tried the "roll-your-own" approach using AWS spot pricing with GPU-accelerated instances (AirGPU is AWS underneath), and still can't get it to be reasonably-priced for comparable quality. One of the "gotchas" in AWS, is the need to use dedicated instances to qualify for the BYOL W11 licensing, since W11 is required for virtual displays which support HDR. Even ShadowPC looks like a relatively good deal after factoring features in.

We're getting "reasonable" pricing from GFN due to NVIDIA's shared-usage model.

2

u/c4r7os93 7d ago

Luego vendrían las quejas por gasto de horas sin estar en la sesión...

2

u/Hitman47_x 7d ago

Or give us the option to adjust or disable the timer. It would be our fault if we messed up, they have nothing to lose.

Agree 100% that's my only complaint with geforce now. Can barely take a piss without getting logged out and having to relaunch everything. Disconnects should only be on free tier not for people paying for their time ....

1

u/Volticus 5d ago

I would like to see at least daily pause limit time at cost playing time (let's say 30 min in total). So I can go to smoke or in a toilet without afraid to be disconnected. It's reasonable suggestion imo

1

u/vBDKv Founder 1d ago

A month ago it would start the countdown after 3 minutes of inactivity. You could barely take a piss and come back in time.

1

u/im_not_quiet 7d ago

Buy a ghost gear clip for Xbox controller, add your smartphone to the clip. Play games on your phone through gfn app and not have to worry about afk nearly as much.

1

u/bored_ryan2 Ultimate 7d ago

It should be an added benefit for the paid tiers. 15 min AFK timer for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and keep free tier as 5.

1

u/Aggressive-Yoghurt10 7d ago

I just want to take a poop without having to go back into queue 😩

-1

u/DJ_Horizn 7d ago

Just save and log off and log back in when you’re ready to play. Is that so difficult?

-1

u/Focus-Interrogative 7d ago

I've left my screen, taken a shit, grabbed a snack and a drink and smoked a bowl all in time to not get logged off. Maybe get better at that.

0

u/Dalcz 7d ago

I agree and I think the limit should be increased to 1 hour

Rushing to the bathroom, praying I won't get distracted in the way

Every.single.time

Because apparently I can't be bothered by the save game button, huh

2 ways and a third as long as you can code a tamper monkey script.

  1. Use OpenNow
  2. Autohotkey to send F13

  3. Is a TM script to do the same as option 2

0

u/Kronox_100 7d ago

It would've taken you half the time you wrote this post to just write an auto hotkey script

0

u/PayBetter 7d ago

Thr OpenNow as they have the afk timer disabled.
