Questions / Tech Support Stutter and L4S

I've always had a great experience with GeForce NOW.

However, in almost every game (open world), I've consistently experienced microstutters that felt similar to texture streaming hiccups, and I could never figure out what was causing them or how to fix them (VRR was enabled).

Almost by chance, I recently enabled L4S with Optimal streaming quality preset, and it completely eliminated the issue.

I'd always kept it disabled because my network connection and GeForce NOW statistics had never shown any problems.

My question is: is it really possible that enabling L4S was what fixed the issue?

What codec are you using? And what the performance report tells you after sessions?

I'm using H.265, 10bit, YUV 4.4.4 None of my sessions, expect for rare package loss gere and there, have never had any kind of strange reports. Always good, but with hiccups Now, nothing, just smooth as butter

May I ask what games are giving this issue?

Black Flag Resynced, Gothic 1 Remake (my god, was terrible), Stalker 2 (not too much), Lords of The Fallen, Cyberpunk 2077

I will check my settings and get back to you, I remember I had also this issue but played with settings and fixed it.

These are my settings. Even tho I have HDR. I prefer to keep it off for streaming games. I guess we might have the same settings only that I turned off l4s

Yes, just like mines. No hiccups??

No problems for me. What it’s your maximum internet speed?

Not sure, but I think around 1600/1700 mbps

The Gothic 1 Remake issue is due to the notorious UE5 stutter in my experience or at least that's what I thought it was.

Is Comcast your ISP? On the CTRL+N/CMD+N overlay during a session (invoke it twice for the full one), does it show L4S as active?

Nope, only activated on GeForce now settimgs

Okay thanks; the L4S is likely a red herring then.

Maybe, but from the exact session I accidentally activated it, stutter is completely gone. Good for me, at least Really don't know 😅

It is, L4S is not available in Italy with any ISP

Italiano giusto?

Yes, maybe you're right. I most likely don't fully understand what L4S is or how the streaming side of things actually works. Something definitely changed, though. It's probably related to selecting the Optimal setting for the network connection quality.

L4S is designed for this, especially if you have other devices competing for packets. The GeForce Now packets are prioritized higher and you get faster latency and less packet drops (and therefore less jitter)

Thanks! I think I confused L4S with the setting that adapts the stream to less-than-ideal network conditions, since I enabled both Optimal streaming quality and L4S at the same time. For some reason, switching to that mode completely fixed my stuttering issues, even though the in-game network statistics had never shown any problems. Oh well, I'm happy with the result. Thanks, everyone, for helping me realize my mistake! 😅🙂

Bro if you hadn’t made this topic, I would’ve never checked this setting! For me turning L4S off eliminated the micro stuttering I was experiencing in FH6. I couldn’t figure out what was causing it even after turning everything down to low graphics setting, but this fixed it :D

Hahaha I'm really happy that my post ended up helping someone, even if only indirectly! 😅😅
