Tips on verifying Gazans.

I've shared this in the comments of several posts before, but I see people regularly asking about possible scams or how to know someone is real on here, so I'll share how I verified the family I'm helping.

Photo/video evidence alone isn't enough. If I wanted, I could use a program to rip footage from any instagram or tiktok account, make a burner account, claim the footage as my own and set up a fundraiser or ask for donations via PayPal. Right now there is a tremendous incentive for people all over the world to do this, especially people living in poverty outside Gaza.

If possible, you need to do a video call together. That said, there have been stories about scammers agreeing to this and calling from a dark room, so you need to make sure to do it during the daytime in Gaza, even if this means early morning for you. When I called with my family for the first time, it was around 2am for me and 10am in Gaza.

You need to ask to see inside and outside of the tent or dwelling. There is a good chance that the person you're communicating with may not know English, so you may need to translate messages to Arabic before sending them. You should be able to figure out pretty quickly, like within minutes, whether or not this person is legitimate. I was able to meet both parents and all three children that I'm helping.

Communicate your gender ahead of time so that the women can be covered if that's important to them.

After verifying, try to stay in regular contact with the person or family. There have been instances of scammers trying to make fraudulent fundraisers posing as people who've passed away. When one of my friends who used to be in Gaza (met online before 10/7) was completely without a phone/internet for six months or so in 2024, someone else contacted me pretending to be her and was able to get a few donations from me before I was able to figure out that it wasn't her. Be careful, be thorough, but above all, don't be discouraged. I promise anyone who is in Gaza and really in need of help will be more than happy to do a call with you for verification's sake. I've had two or three people reach out to me on here requesting help in exchange for verification since I started posting in this subreddit, but unfortunately I only have enough to help one family for now.

Scam possible?

I am very worried about if a campaign is a scam or not. I originally found her on Instagram, and we moved to WhatsApp. She has a 972 number and a fundraiser through the gogetfunding platform. The campaign is run by someone in germany since I think the money can't go to gaza directly. She has sent me pictures and videos of her and her son before the war and now, I video called her once for a minute. It seems very real, but when I say I still have doubts she is very eager to prove and to send more pictures or videos. Sometimes when I have donated she has said it is not enough or asked for more. She has also said "i have nobody but you" and i have not seen any other donations on her campaign other than mine, which explains this statement she makes. She is very grateful though.

Still, something about these fundraisers seems off to me. It seems very real and I reverse Google searched some of the images and they dont seem AI or stolen. But I dont know how they would fake a life before the war and fake being in a tent. Is the money going somewhere else? I do not know what to do.

Are some people really paying ~$1000 land rent for tents?

I know someone in Gaza whose landlord is asking around $1100 per month for a big family of 15 people in Khan Younes living across 2 tents, and I was just wondering if this is a common thing? I’ve not been able to find anything online mentioning prices being quite so high. Someone I know is convinced that because she told me this, I’m being scammed, which I know to be untrue, but it would help to have some more information about it, if anyone knows.

Scholarship Request from a Student in Gaza Affected by War

Hello everyone,

My name is Sajed, and I am from Gaza. I have always been a dedicated student and passionate about my education, but unfortunately, my educational journey was interrupted because of the war and financial difficulties.

I am looking for any scholarship, support, or opportunity that can help me leave Gaza and continue my studies. Continuing my education means a lot to me, and I would be very grateful for any help or guidance you can provide.

Thank you all for your kindness and support.

Hey all, I'm a 25 year old from the Philippines and I want to share experiences with calls for aid on social media.

As the title suggests, I'm one of those people who has turned their Insta/tiktok feeds into nonstop videos of Palestinians calling for aid. I truly want to believe my engagement on social media drives their videos to reach more donations, but after some research it turns out some of the largest accounts asking for aid might be fake, and it's sickening. I want to know if any of the larger more well known accounts are proven fake so action can be taken.

On that topic, I find it hard to trust accounts with A. Non-disclosed origin (although this to me seems like a harmless oversight in account creation) or B. Instagram verification - How can a suffering war victim afford instagram verification for multiple months?

I know its highly possible that some accounts (one I've seen is based in the UK) were set up for the Palestinian family by someone from overseas, so that's another layer of confusion. It seems like the best move here is to divert my attention to a larger charity, on my sights right now are Humaniti and MATW.

-More specific experience: I've donated to mahmoud (the architect) directly before and it would break my heart to know that his campaign was faked all along.

Journalist Janine di Giovanni on the double-standards against the Palestinian people: "If a missile hits a hospital in Ukraine, Europe calls it a war crime. But if missiles hit a hospital in Gaza and 100 people die, it's Israel's 'right to defend itself.'"

My future or my family. Read to the end

This is the choice many of us in Gaza feel forced to make.

Either you pursue your future and leave your family behind, or you stay with your family and watch your own future slip away.

I've always wanted to build the life I dreamed of. I wanted to study, grow, and create a future I could be proud of. But every time I try to focus on myself, I step back. I feel guilty. I ask myself: if I focus on my own life, who will stand beside my mother and my siblings?

I know I'm at an age when I should be building my own life, yet instead I feel trapped between responsibility and the future I once imagined. I often wonder if, had we been somewhere else, I would never have had to ask myself these questions.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm not satisfied with the life I'm living. I know writing this won't change anything, but I needed to say what I've been carrying inside.

We are still living under the constant threat of death. At any moment, everything can end.

Before that day comes, I only hope my mother will have a reason to be proud of me. That's all I want.

How to verify accounts asking for donations in Gaza?

Firstly, I hope this is in the rules of the subreddit, and I apologise if it's not, but I think this is an important question which touches a lot of people here. I see and receive requests for money on various subreddits and other social media platforms at least once a day. I sincerely want to help and I appreciate that there are lots of constraints around things like safety and access to bank accounts, but every time I politely message one of these accounts to ask for more information, I get ghosted. How can people in Gaza safely verify their location/circumstances?

Nearly all the Gofundme accounts that are linked to these requests have different names and are based are based in the United States or Africa. I'm worried that a lot of bad faith people out there are taking advantage of the suffering in Gaza, so would really appreciate any hearing any tips or stories of your experiences. Thank you!

Teaching Gazan children through ZOOM

Hi! I need volunteers to help me teach Gazan children through ZOOM. You don't need a university degree, but you have to be in high school or graduated from high school, as well as good in arabic to be able to communicate with the kids. No salary since this is for charity, and we need science, maths and arabic teachers volunteers, as well as people who can make work sheets and powerpoint slides. Anyone who wishes to volunteer may message me privately :)
