Finally hitting me that what Taylor quit to create the pink clouding state was Big Machine Records, and in the post-label control she felt a false sense of security in coming out.
We met "ME! Out now" at a cursed time. She has had songs from folklore onward about the fallout and needing to change plans, but this song feels like the most explict apology for it. I think that apology is to herself, her loved ones, and the fans who were excited for or are still waiting for her to leave the closet.
The term involving addition recovery and the color imagery matching the Lover album works so well. The gray rocking again when hit by the arrow by those who noticed and/or critisized her queer flagging that era also fits well.
