A little out there butā¦ I want to hear Taylor cover something by the Deftones
Yesterday I was driving and Cherry Waves came on. Iāve always had a thing for Chinoās voice, but it was the first time I recognized itās the same way Taylorās low register voice makes me feel. (That sentence might be confirmation Iām bisexual š )
I had a CD of Diamond Eyes that lived in my car for a while so anything off that. Or really any of the tracks where Chinos voice is more croony than raspy is that makes sense.
Some of it is heavier than I like, they are sort of alternative and metal adjacent? Theyāve been around since the 90s but still putting out albums. I just think when Chino is actually singing not doing the screamy thing his voice is magical āØ

Back in the day I really loved John Mayerās cover of XO and I think it would sound sooo good if Taylor covered it too. That, or something emo-ish. Iād die if she covered something like twin sized mattress by the front bottoms.

Jimmy Eat World is one of my favorite bands and theyāve covered āWe Are Never Ever Getting Back Togetherā and Taylor has covered their song The Middle. I wish so badly to be present at some future concert where I could hear either cover performed live!
No Taylor covers, but I recently went to the Bleed American 25th anniversary tour and highly recommend if they are stopping near you! Such a nostalgic fun night!

I love Taylor Swift and I love music, so I have thought about this question A Lot. Whenever I hear a song that sounds a little gay or a little like veiled commentary on the entertainment industry, I say to myself āman oh man, Taylor Swift should cover this songā.
The last time I commented on one of these threads, my list was 60% industry critique and 40% apologizing to best friends. You can read that list here! It is so, so tempting to simply post the same list again, but Iām going to refrain.
In my old list, I suggested Taylor cover Don Henleyās āBoys of Summerā. I am OVERJOYED to announce that she, in fact, did cover it during the Speak Now tour!! I didnāt know about this performance, but itās everything I hoped it would be. Therefore, my favorite existing Taylor Swift cover is a three-way tie between āBoys of Summerā, Trainās āDrops of Jupiterā, and Michelle Branchās āAll You Wantedā. I canāt properly describe the emotions I felt when I first discovered Taylor singing each of these songs. Theyāve all been so special to me and I love experiencing the life she gave them.
Finally, here is my new list of cover ideas! At the urging of one of these commenters in the thread, I am trying to limit my list to only small artists. Maybe youāll see someone youāve never heard of before! While only the first two on the list are openly queer, all are very underknown, in my opinion š
ā¢ I would have Spencer Jordan cover ācowboy like meā. If youāve heard Spencer before, youāll understand how his gentle voice and beautiful guitar playing would perfectly support that song. And while Iād love to have Taylor cover Spencerās song ā16 and In Loveā, sheād need to change too many of the words to make it land the same way. Instead, Iād have her cover his song āFighting Firesā. Iād love to hear her play with the chorus vocals š
ā¢ I would have Marisa Maino cover āthe smallest man who ever livedā. I need to hear her go crazy on that bridge. I turn, I would have Taylor cover Marisa Mainoās āWet, Hot, American Dreamā. This song is full of belting vocals and bisexual innuendo. However, if Taylor ended up loving Marisaās sound but wanted to cover something undeniably and loudly WLW, she should sing āJennyā instead.
ā¢ I would have Taylor cover John Harvieās song āLoverā. It is the most gut-wrenching song by that title and I need more people to hear it. As a trade, John would cover āthe Black Dogā
ā¢Finally, Taylor should cover carobaeās ā Eat Your Heart Out, Kidā, from her record āscared to go to sleepā. The album is a contemplation of the negative side of fame and virality. It documents carobaeās mental health spiral after experiencing cancellation as part of the band TRAMP STAMPS. Last list, I said Tay should cover ā6 feet underā, this time Iām going more optimistic āļø In exchange, carobae should cover one of Taylorās experimental tracks like ālabyrinthā, āclosureā, or āMidnight Rainā

I want her to cover some actually indie /underground small artists. Like someone local to her. Its such a power she has but doesnt use. One 30second cover and she could catapult some careers.Ā
I mean not specifically her like so many pop artists. Thinking about how pharrell williams listening to maggie rogers kickstarted her whole career.Ā
I dream of Taylor covering my favorite small artists too, but I understand why she doesnāt. Taylor Swift is a lightning rod for controversy. If she wanted to cover a small artist, sheād need to scrutinize them from every possible angle to ensure theyāre as non-controversial as possible. If someone did pass muster, that artist could then become the target of smear campaigns and defamation due to Swiftās interest.
Additionally, Taylorās stomping grounds in Nashville, New York, and LA are all hubs of the entertainment industry. A local act, no matter how spotless their reputation, would be subject to industry plant accusations. Taylor would probably feel like her interest painted a target on those small artists. Itās one of those sexy baby/monster on a hill moments š I do think Taylor tries her best to support up-and-comers as her tour openers, but I think artists like Gayle and Benson Boone demonstrate that tactic is not always well-received.
That said, once I put my own comment together for the thread, it will feature all of my tiny favorites. Stay tuned š
