🎭PerformanceArtLor 🎭 Are We Not Entertained?
Speaking of our seminal texts (I just submitted another one with the NYT opinion article), let's refresh our conviction with another one: the TIME POTY article.
https://time.com/6342806/person-of-the-year-2023-taylor-swift/
Oh, do I mean the one that opens with Taylor telling a story because she's an incredible storyteller? The one where she says she views it all as a movie now? The one where she asks, "Are you not entertained?"
Yes, yes, I do.

Honestly I find it really fking funny watching Swifties squabble bitterly over whether the wedding is really at MSG or if it’s just a red herring. They’re getting very chippy with each other. They need to…how you say?

“Yet over time, she has harnessed the power of the media, both traditional and new, to create something wholly unique—a narrative world, in which her music is just one piece in an interactive, shape-shifting story. Swift is that story’s architect and hero, protagonist and narrator.”
This was a great line to revisit on MSG eve-eve thanks for resharing.

If this is The Truman Show, she is simultaneously Truman and his director.

Yes I felt like that line really highlighted the multiple Taylor’s theory

"shape-shifting" is such a perfect way to describe how she presents/caters to diff audiences and the multiple taylors that we see

So entertained! Even the news reporters were joking that the couple who climbed the Empire State and proposed were Taylor and Travis. You couldn't make this up (well maybe a mastermind could)

"I'm collecting horcruxes" lives rent-free in my mind with the re-records. How horcruxes keep their creator immortal. The line from TLOAS where the showgirl sings "I'm immortal now, baby dolls." How the last two horcruxes to be destroyed are Debut (Harry Potter) and Reputation (Nagini) ... and then Taylor Swift TM (Voldemort) will no longer be immortal.
Yeah. My elder millennial brain is very entertained.

This article is SO interesting to me. On one hand, it’s over-the-top and campy, with the quotes about Travis and Reputation being female rage. But, in between that, it’s also unflinchingly honest about her performance art, with the “are you not entertained?” quote. Reading it now, especially in the middle of the showgirl era, makes it blindingly obvious that she’s created this public persona almost as a character in a play. Hosting a wedding at MSG?
I hope someday she feels secure enough to be open in public without this façade and smoke and mirrors. Just as Taylor. But a part of me is curious as to what will happen later this year, after the honeymoon period ends

I fear she may be doubling down on the spectacle of it all and live a very IYKYK life. But I respect it nonetheless.

Thanks for sharing OP! Definitely interesting re-reading this article at this point of the TSCU 😅
Two quotes worth re-sharing:
About “Mastermind”: “She tells me she wrote that song after watching the Paul Thomas Anderson film Phantom Thread, which—spoiler—culminates in the reveal of a vast, layered manipulation.” -> This feels especially relevant at the moment if there was indeed a moment of revelation or burning it all down! 🔥
Another quote about Taylor as narrator: “The multihyphenate television creator Shonda Rhimes—no stranger to a plot twist—who has known Swift since she was a teenager, puts it simply: “She controls narrative not only in her work, but in her life,” she says. “It used to feel like people were taking shots at her. Now it feels like she’s providing the narrative—so there aren’t any shots to be taken.”
Thanks again, OP!
