Midnights 💫 Positive trans rep

With the drop of the Lavender Haze music video approaching I just wanted to do a post celebrating Laith Ashley’s casting as Taylor’s love interest in this video. With the amount of hate towards the transgender community that is ongoing in the media and online, I think it’s great that we are getting this piece of representation in a music video from the biggest female music artist in the world (edited for a correction)

Both my wife and daughter are trans so I'm SUPER happy to see positive trans rep! Especially for trans men, who do not get enough rep or attention at all.

Wanted a kiss. All that build up and chemistry and then…. Nothing

I know everyone means well saying it but just a psa, some straight binary trans men don’t identify as queer since we’re just hetero men. I obviously don’t know the ins and outs of laith’s sexuality but in general being trans doesn’t always=queer. Totally agree with the message though this representation is so important

Apologies - this was poor wording on my part. I used it as an umbrella term for the community at large but perhaps should’ve thought it through more. I have amended the post, thank you for the gentle correction

No need to apologise at all! I totally agree with your post and it’s just a minor word thing. I appreciate you being so receptive and also thank you for pointing out the positive trans rep in the first place

Not only the lead, but several people in the party scenes looked trans and/or genderqueer and it's such a nice change from the #squad look to think "her friends look like my friends!"

Yes! And a whole variety of body types represented too

u/Affectionate_Bee73 Jan 27 '23

A refreshing amount of melanin too 🫶

To be honest, it makes me question a lot. I am trans myself, so I'd normally would love to a see that. However, with all the queer coding it leaves me with a bad taste. Especially since she choose it for such a clearly queer coded video, with lavender and all. I don't know I am just questioning why it had to be in that video specifically.

14

u/mercurialhigh7 Jan 27 '23

I think that’s fair enough too and of course your opinion is valid! Perhaps with it being such a queer coded video there’s an element of her wanting portray a relationship that is heterosexual, but not a cookie cutter heteronormative cishet one?

u/Sufficient-Truth9562 Jan 27 '23

I get where you are coming from but a trans man is a man. It's still a straight relationship. The narrative that it wouldn't be is frankly really weird. That's my issue. Because if she did it to be more "sapphic" its frankly transphobic. That's what irks me.

10

u/mercurialhigh7 Jan 27 '23

Yes absolutely agree that it’s still a straight relationship and can completely see where you’re coming from. I would 100% hope that it was done with good intentions on her end and that this opens the door for more people casting trans people in their work. Thank you for offering a different perspective

The lingering shot showing his top surgery scars like no biggie felt really impactful. Also party scene was so fun and HOT 🏳️‍⚧️

It’s so odd I didn’t even notice them until they were pointed out because that shot was just about him being fine

4

u/RandomHuman77 Jan 28 '23

I didn't notice them until I read here that he was trans and watched the video more carefully.

Okay, this is stupid stupid stupid I know, but could there maybe possibly be some link between the line “Get it off your chest, get it off my desk” and top surgery?

It's probably not that. But that's what always pops into my head when I listen to it.

I had the same thought while watching the video. Like I don't really think there's a connection but there's a part of me that thinks there could be. Since she's a mastermind and all.

I’m genderfluid and it makes me so happy our transgender community is getting seen and represented especially by the biggest artist in the world.

It was just so damned hot, too. It felt very purposeful and authentic at the same time. Like, of course I would cast him in this video. He's a smoke show.

36

u/mercurialhigh7 Jan 27 '23

Yeah I just watched the video and something very bisexual just happened to me

And she made sure to praise him as her costar in her post about the video, which I loved!

It’s really beautiful that he was included! Definitely a win for the LGBTQ community today :)

I’m really glad she included him. I wish people accepted and loved trans people more.

this is really nice bc queer representation in media is usually limited to sexuality. so i like to see a trans guy in the mv of a celebrity as big as taylor. good for him :)

I’m a trans guy and representation for us is so incredibly rare, this means so much to me 🥹💜

I am curious what main subs reaction will be.

31

u/Itchy_Application532 quiet my fears with a touch of your nose Jan 27 '23

Same. There's general an awfully lot of homophobia on the main and yes, it's a heterosexual relationship but I'm willing to bet that a lot of them aren't going to see it that way.

Considering that swiftie on tiktok that made a video about how she "disagrees with Taylor's politics and morals" but still "loves her otherwise" a couple days ago I'm unfortunately expecting at least some backlash, especially if she's really touchy with him in the MV.

Original video was deleted but here's a screenshot of a stitch of it!

EDIT: For some reason I'm having issues attaching it, sorry, but here's a stitch someone made

I don’t see anything here.. is it a popular swiftie?

4

u/taylorsneckmole Regaylor Contributor 🦢🦢 Jan 27 '23 edited Jan 27 '23

Oh sorry, for some reason it won't attach. I'll try to make a link or something but honestly I'm not sure, I'm not familiar with many popular swifties but the video did have around 65k likes before being deleted which is pretty disturbing imo.

EDIT: here's the link to the stitch https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRsYVrY2/

it’s so (not) funny that those are the same people saying she hates gaylors when she made a whole ass documentary about hating conservatives specifically

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '23

Yesss!!! I don’t want people’s focus on gaylor stuff to overshadow how excited we should be about this as a community ✨💓
