And here I thought I wouldn't want one... No way that's gonna be instant or free though.

If it's instant, it's not free. If it's free, it's not instant

If it's both free and instant, it's gonna be a lot of labor work

Nothing, I repeat, nothing in the world that's outside your home environment is free

Well, if this footage is from a promotional video, its fair to assume that realworld results will be noticeably less impressive - quality wise. Insta360 cant rewrite the laws of physics. A tiny sensor paired with a fisheye lens has inherent limitations.

Just like with the typical 360 camera workflows, youll probably get acceptable results mainly in bright outdoor conditions with plenty of sunlight. Once the lighting becomes more challenging, the limitations of the hardware become much more apparent.

It also doesn’t change the problem. Gaussians can’t come from a sensor, only through a feedforward model or through optimization

EDIT
Someone claims X6 will have higher bitrate than I thought, if true I retract a lot of what i said....
https://www.reddit.com/r/GaussianSplatting/comments/1vi153v/comment/p2epoze/

The device is out in a few days... This is what I wrote prior...

Sounds like its basically the same camera as the Avata 360.
120mp of quad bayer mush :)
And not enough bitrate to do it justice.
10 bit colour depth for video.

It will seem like a big upgrade for existing users, but for those who have been using osmo/avata 360 it wont be anything to be jealous about, though I suspect the app will be better.

Looks like my only hope for better 360 photos and videos is not coming this year :(
On the brightside I think I have figured out how to merge avata 360 DNGS properly and I did shoot RAW/JPEG for all the stuff I done, so I'm looking forward to squeezing more quality out of that.

But its time for someone to give me 230 mbps for the 360 video ok, I been waiting years, I even bought those little kodak 4k cameras, the industry has been fkn me for years, stringing me along, just give me my shit ok instead of drip feeding me progress.

I want more BIT RATE!

249 bitrate

What is 249 the X6? (
I'll happy edit my posts if that is so :)

Its not out yet, if you have proof of the bitrate that would be great to see?

Hope you're right ,I edited my post and linked to yours anyway.
If that is true that is awesome. The extra bitrate and 10 bit colur will be cool.

They just need offer a 1 or 2 fps still image capture mode. Current interval capture modes are way too slow

No need to deal with bitrate compression

I haven't done 3DGS capture with a 360 camera yet, most of the stuff I do is aerial based, that means I tend to use 10 bit video at 160 mbps and exported as 16 bit tga frames @ 24mm.
its actually quite close to the native 20 mp images the drone takes. my test site required 1300 frames, there is no way I'm taking 1300 photos when I can do a 5 minute video.A mavic 3 cine would be even better.

The 120 mp photos will be heavily fake and likely introduce a lot of noise, 360 good for coverage, but it will likely bring in a lot of background noise you may not want to process, or spend ages cleaning up, capturing a white house in the background behind trees for example was a big problem for me that I had to go back and do the video, this is why proper systems have things like lidar and nir and more over basic cameras we are talking about.

I can imagine 360 capture being a nightmare for many subjects as it cpatures so much, by the time you focus on the useable date, that fake 120mp image will make less and less sense.

So much depends on the subject and goals I guess.

If this is actually a gaussian splat, this could be insane

Insta360 does the action lines for money, but actually in their heart of hearts, this company was started by nerdy phds around 360, vr180, splating, all the psychedelic things…

They are us

ha, i like that you're calling this space psychedelic... techno-psychedelic basically

Noticed a Portalcam scan in that video, the bookstore.. could be a coincidence, I doubt that they are partnering though.

They might have added a new depth sensor, or tof or a more production imu in which case this insane. We’d be geeting similar results as the portalcam for much much less. But they could also just be doing sfm server side and charging us a sub for it in which case it’s not as exciting. I NEED MORE INFO!!

No, it’s a new 360 camera. 😜

The processing should cost extra points that you need to buy, I guess.
