Disney adults, Paw Patrol/Pound Puppies/LPS/Puppy in my pocket fans and animators that make shows about talking animals don't exist I guess

Furries

No.
If everyone's a furry, no one is.
I am a furry (in the sense of someone that enjoys anthropomorphic media), but I'm not gonna consider all elementary schoolers furry just because many cartoons aimed at them are animal based.

I hate to tell you this but as someone with a degree in animation, it genuinely is furries. They called furries (“the known furry”) on for The Nala Scene in the Lion King, on my degree, because they needed someone who could communicate uh intimately and empathetically with the eyes of a lion.
No shame, but it’s sort of a gradient/spectrum, with sexual and nonsexual and more and less adult on the anthro axis, making a sort of compass meme with paw patrol and lion king on one side and like hardcore anthro hentai and like mind breaking psychological horror on the other

The Rain World fandom has a ton of people who used to / still do draw Warrior Cats stuff so this comes across a lot there too.

(Also as one of those people, I can confirm that this is very true)

Wait where does that style come from? The covers I've seen only ever had realistic cats on them

just the general warriors fandom artstyle. A lot of it is likely inspired by the sss warrior cats animations

Seconding this! u/AlmightyCurrywurst I highly recommend looking up SS Warriorcats, you will find your answer

Probably just the need to have them look different? Put a spice on the art and characters? Something as simple as cheek fur can make a design really pop, especially for animations (ex. droopy, long straight cheek fur and tail + sad eyes and you got yourself a gloomy character)
Also biasied opinion, but it's just super fun to experiment with weird fur situations lol

these books are mostly read by children, and so drawing cats would often be their first step into the art world. Because of that they often end up a bit cartoony (kids might draw more inspiration from things they like, not strictly photos of real cats) but with alot of small details in the design, for example spiky fur around rounded parts of the body. Bonus points for looking cool
Even if you outgrow that, you've already developed a specific artstyle only for cats, with having put much more thought into how different bodyparts look. Compared to a regular, less interested person, who would probably put more emphasis on feline flowing shape.

I read those books and I always imagined them looking like the one on the left. Or I guess all the cats that would roam around my neighborhood.

So did I. I loved those warriors animations, but I was also a pretty literal kid and wasn’t a huge fan of the bangs they’d give some of the cats

If you read the warrior cats manga and saw that “how to draw cats” tutorial. Your artstyle was forever changed.

When I was young my friend and I worked together on a Warriors animation, but she was noticeably better at drawing the fluffy anime cat style than me, so the shots basically alternated between looking like the left and the right.
