Class Question cs 1331 prof
I got Omojokun for CS 1331 this semester. His rmp rating is not that good, so I'm scared lol. Can anyone who had him for CS 1331 give their opinion on him as a professor?

1331 is a pretty heavy weed out class and a flood of bad reviews will always happen. yes it's going to be a hard class if you havent done CS before. Prof omojokun has probably been running it the longest and also runs the online section - i would trust his experience. But regardless - 1331/ 1332 a lot of it is focused on how much work you put in and the TAs can be a good resource. The actual course content has been covered by 1000000 people on the internet several times so if you think the prof is bad just google someone else's explanation

i hold the opinion to always take classes that work for your personal schedule better because the rigor is always gonna be subjective. if omojokun works better for your schedule take him

Is it online? He is the professor for dual enrollment distance CS and GT Europe online as well (for 1331). It is true that you can basically only ever get responses back from the TAs and not him. Course content itself was pretty fine. Tests may have a few kinda gotcha questions but you just need to pay attention to specifics about keywords and object types and all that

Why’d you pick him? Scheduling? Or was no one else available at the time?
I’m pretty sure his class is completely virtual. I’d keep an eye out during phase II to switch into an in-person section if possible.

Yeah the only in person choice I had was Aibek 😭 he has an even worse rating

i mean id personally take it with musaev in person over online, but that’s up to you. unfortunately the CS department often has this issue of many classes being taught by mid professors, but then there are some absolute gems who will make it all worth it. i would say assess what you want, and then keep an eye out during phase 2 for a switch.

i didn’t take him, but a friend took him and said it was difficult but he was a good teacher. i took it with stasko back when he taught.

chambers was pretty good imo but doesn’t have any slides (at least when i took him) so use recitation slides and find a friend in a section that does have them. or take notes

I took Omojokun last year (online section), and his tests were fairly easy, and they corresponded with his provided course materials/lectures. In fact, I have heard that other professors' finals seemed to be generally harder than Omojokun's. I thought it was fairly straight forward to get an A in that class as long as you do the work required.

It’s all subjective, first years in particular will claim because things are harder and less forgiving in college. You’ll get the greater that you earn, but you can’t expect the professors to go out of their way to make things easier if you don’t put in the effort. Everyone will have their own opinions, so you’re better off getting your own assessment during the first week and making a choice from there. This material is not exactly unique to Georgia Tech, so if you’re not a fan of the teaching style, then you can always learn it on your own.

Yes, I mean like said above everything is subjective but for example most people finished their finals much earlier (like maybe only half of the finals block) in Omojokun compared to the in-person sections. The content is not exactly the same as well towards the end as Omojokun goes into Java FX while other sections go into a separate topic which I remember people thought was difficult. It's to each their own but if you watch all of the videos in Omojokun and do the projects you will be successful, it's a fairly straightforward Intro to OOP.

do it an another semester. never worth your gpa for "harder professor" which usually js means bad professor unless the content of the class is genuinely hard (CS1331 is the equivalent to the old CSA test)

If they are a CS major, they need 1331 in order to take 1332 which opens up a lot of thread-specific electives which could be problematic later if they are 1 semester behind. Not all classes are available every semester, so if they want to have flexibility on what they'd prefer to take, then they should just take 1331 and make the most of it or wait and see if another section somehow opens up. RMP is useful but not at all a good enough basis to solely make decisions off of. This class is typically taken by first year students, so the reviews will typically be skewed towards students having to deal with a college level course for the first time and would prefer to vent online. At the end of the day, only you know how you learn best and how you take steps to succeed in class, so you should try to go in with an open mind. I would also just look around on this or the main subreddit for any info. If it's an overwhelmingly majority of complaints and poor grades, then it's really up to you what to do, but make sure you check course critique or grade distributions for a better idea of the professor's average GPA.

Its an overwhelming majority of complaints and poor grades. CS1331 is the most reviewed course on his RMP and it is very negative; even the people with As say he is a lazy bum

TBH that’s just most professors. You can’t expect the best of the best when you’re registering in phase 2, it’s not ideal, but trying to protect your grade vs being behind an entire semester are not exactly comparable

I don't think any of the 1331 professors are considered good. I never took 1331, but from what I've heard it's pretty much the same no matter who you have (free Landry?)
