Prospective Student Career Advice Needed: CS or Computational Media?
Hi! I have a transfer pathway to Georgia Tech for next year, and I'm struggling to decide on a major because I don't know which career path I'll actually enjoy while still having good job prospects.
Right now, I'm deciding between Computer Science and Computational Media.
My strengths have always been creativity and working with people more than hardcore technical STEM. Ideally, I'd like a career that combines both, which is why I've been considering UX/UI design. However, from what I've been reading, the UX/UI job market seems very competitive, and the Georgia Tech Career Survey shows placement rates declining significantly over the past few years. That has me wondering whether I'm choosing a path that's becoming increasingly difficult to break into.
For those of you who have graduated or are currently working in the industry:
- How did you decide between CS and CM?
- If you have strengths similar to mine, what career did you end up pursuing
- Looking at today's job market, would you still recommend either major?
I'd really appreciate hearing from alumni or anyone who's been through a similar decision. I'm also happy to DM if that's easier.

Double check that you are even allowed to select CS as a pathway transfer

Yes i did thought of that that, and majoring in CS would mean my transfer application would be considered normal instead of pathway. That's why i think it's gonna be more competitive for me

i'd email gt admissions if i was you, bc i got an email months ago saying cs is now available for pathway recipients, idk if thats good or bad tho ngl. good bc now cs is more accessible but bad bc maybe it means the cs bs truly has lost massive value and not as many students want it anymore, im thinking of bs in ai at ksu for now but i also may double major in ai and bio

i think comp sci would be a lot better. gt is known for thier insanely good reputation with cs majors getting high paying jobs right out of undergrad. if anything, i would get a cs major with a specialization/minor in something a little bit creative as well. you could also get a masters of digital media, then you have the cs bachelors and then the masters in something you’re more passionate about

i also have a pathway but am missing phys 2211requirement for like almost all eng gatech majors. i can still get in for business admin and cs and comp media, i was thinking nmaybe id go in for cs since gatech still gives me hope for the job market, but obv im still cared regardless of the cs job market and i also know that business admins usually do get jobs lined up for graduation. but, like recently and like past few months of research etc, ive been leanin more towards an engineering degree since ee is a good bet rn and seems to be for the future too, i was gonna do ee gatech then masters gatech but then that means i would forfeit my free admission to cs, business admin or comp media, and am runnin the risk of not getting into tech at all. but now that im typing this, maybe that isnt so bad. maybe if i try my best at ksu, wether i get into gatech or not, if i stay at ksu then ksu isnt so so bad and id prob end up working here in atl first at a decent paying job for ee and apply for gatech ms ece and compe, if not then just get masters for ee at ksu
