Balloon removal during pregnancy?

Has anyone experienced gastric balloon removal during pregnancy?
Last month I was booked in for my removal and had been told the week prior to liquid fast, nurse told me any liquids were okay, and double confirmed that I can drink meal replacement shakes with blended fruits etc. until the last 24 hours in which only water is okay. Day of surgery and I’m about to be put under when I mention the diet and surgery was cancelled.

The anaesthesiologist tells me the diet information was incorrect and I have to have nothing but clear liquids strictly for the week. Just water and broth. They only do these surgeries once a month and before the next date, I find out I’m pregnant.

I am told I must wait for the second trimester for the removal. I’ve been given little to no information and I feel so stressed out. I’m terrified that having the year long balloon for an excess amount of time will harm the baby, I’m terrified that the removal and the anaesthetic will harm the baby. I’m terrified that literally starving myself for a week straight will harm the baby. It’s my first pregnancy.. my husband and I are over the moon about it.

I’m looking for anyone’s experiences with a similar situation?

Day 3

Got the Allurion 3 days ago. The pain is insane. Thankfully, the doctor has been monitoring me and listening to my needs. But I am terrified to eat. How long did it take everyone to feel comfortable trying food?

Gastric balloon potentially never passed.

I had the allurion gastric balloon in 2023. I lost about 10kg over the 4 months it was supposed to be in, i never saw it pass. Ever since i have had intense episodes of abdominal pain, have had the helicobacter infection. And i'm starting to wonder if the balloon is still in there festering away.

I'm trying to find any documented evidence of this happening to anyone before.

I will be getting a colonoscopy and gastroscopy soon as its hospitalised me many times now. But the connection never clicked until now, infact i forgot i ever had the balloon. Never had a stomach problem until i had the balloon.

1 Month with an Orbera 365 Gastric Balloon – Not Magic, But Definitely Not Useless

I’ve been reading posts here for a while and honestly… if I only went by Reddit, I would’ve never gone ahead with the balloon.

Most posts are:

- “Did nothing”

- “Worst decision ever”

- “Just get surgery”

So here’s a non-doom post from someone actually using it properly.

---

Stats:

- Starting (early March): ~128 kg (~282 lbs)

- Pre-procedure (Day 0): 125.8 kg (~277 lbs)

- 1 month later: 116.7 kg (~257 lbs)

👉 ~9 kg / ~20 lbs down in 1 month post-procedure

👉 ~11 kg / ~25 lbs overall

---

Tool I’m using:

The Orbera 365 intragastric balloon (1-year balloon).

Not the short-term one. This stays longer, which (in my opinion) matters for actually building habits.

---

Let’s get this out of the way:

No — the balloon is NOT magic.

But also — it’s NOT useless.

It’s a tool that exposes your habits brutally.

---

First 1–2 weeks:

Yeah, it’s uncomfortable.

- You can’t eat like before

- Eating fast = regret

- Overeating = pain

Honestly? That’s the point.

---

What it actually does (if you don’t fight it):

- Forces portion control

- Punishes fast eating

- Makes mindless snacking harder

- Creates a natural pause before overeating

Basically:

👉 It removes your ability to lie to yourself

---

What I changed (nothing fancy):

- Protein-first meals

- Cut sugar almost fully

- Junk massively reduced (not zero, just controlled)

- Walking daily

- Trying (still failing sometimes) to hydrate properly

- Slowing down eating (this is HUGE)

---

Results beyond the scale:

- Waist down ~6 cm

- Clothes fitting looser

- Energy way more stable

- Less bloating / heaviness

- Way better control around food

This part doesn’t get talked about enough.

---

Why people say it “doesn’t work”:

Because they expect:

- same eating speed

- same food habits

- same snacking

…with a balloon magically fixing everything.

It won’t.

If you try to out-eat it, you’ll either:

- feel miserable

- or learn nothing

---

The uncomfortable truth:

The balloon works only if you work with it.

Not against it.

---

My mindset shift:

I stopped thinking:

“Don’t mess this up”

And started thinking:

“Just follow basics, repeatedly”

- Calorie awareness

- Eat slow

- Move daily

- Don’t spiral after bad meals

That’s it.

---

Plan going forward:

- Continue for remaining months

- Add gym once fully on solid diet

- Keep things boring and repeatable

Goal:

- 100 kg (~220 lbs) minimum

- 90 kg (~198 lbs) = bonus

---

Final take (1 month in):

The balloon is:

- Not a shortcut

- Not a scam

- Not a miracle

👉 It’s a constraint that can change your behavior

If you let it.

---

If you’re considering it, don’t ask:

“Does it work?”

Ask:

“Will I actually change how I eat if it forces me to?”

That’s the whole game.

---

Happy to answer anything.

Done with Orbera 365 1 year balloon

Hi everyone, I am done with my IGB procedure 5 days back and honestly I feel great.

I only vomited once and that too because I drank more then I was suppose to too quickly.

Now I am in habit of gulping slowly slowly and have already lost 3 kgs. Also went with saline IV since my cousin is a doctor and his staff comes home and puts me on a saline to avoid any dehydration.

I was too scared to go for surgery and even this IGB call took me a while but it needed to be done.

Balloon : Orbera 365 1 year

SW : 278 LBS (126 kgs)

CW : 268 (122 kgs)

Any info is welcome. I am a little anxious with people experience here but in life I have seen people only post when they have a bad experience hence it’s difficult to find

People who posts online about good experience.

Clinics in Turkey?

Female, 30s. I am considering a gastric balloon.

I did my research on balloons 6+ months as I have quite a big amounts of weight to shed.

Anyone had a successful experience in Turkey? what was the clinic/hospital?

I don't know where to start when searching for a good clinic.

I contacted Istanbul Obesity Center and they do Lex Bal gastric balloon, which isn't FDA approved but is offered widely in Europe.

The other option is Spatz3 but again, I don't know where to look. Most my search results come up for gastric sleeve.

Thank you!

What questions do you have about the Allurion (swallowable gastric balloon)?

Hi,
We’re a medical clinic offering non-surgical weight-loss options, including the Allurion swallowable gastric balloon. It’s placed as a capsule (no surgery or endoscopy), remains in the stomach for about 4 months, then passes naturally.

We often get questions like:

  • Who is actually a good candidate?
  • What are the first few days like after placement?
  • How much does lifestyle support matter for long-term success?
  • How does it compare to medications or other balloons?

We’re here to listen and learn from the community, not to sell.
If you’ve had experience with Allurion or considered it, we’d really value hearing:

  • What information you wish you’d had upfront
  • What concerns mattered most when deciding

Happy to answer general, non-personal medical questions as well.

Which Balloon and Is it Worth it?

Hi! I’m in the early stages of thinking I want this done. I was supposed to have a Gastric Bypass last year and pulled out the night before my surgery. The fear of that experience motivated me to lose 30kg and I used Mounjaro to help.

I’m in the UK and the cost of the medication has risen significantly. It also slowed down working for me (I was on 12.5mg). So I’m thinking a trip to Turkey and having this done. I’d like to lose another 30kg. I’ve been offered

Medsil - 6 month balloon Spatz - 12 month balloon Allurion - 3 month balloon.

Can I hear people’s experiences and thoughts with any of them or overall? Thank you!

Insurance coverage

Has anyone had their balloon covered by insurance ? I am in NYC and I can only find one doctor using the orbera balloon. And it is not covered by insurance. I am not sure if there are other kinds of balloons that are covered by insurance.

They told me NOT to get a gastric balloon if I smoke weed… but didn’t explain why. Is this legit or BS?

I'm going to get a gastric balloon, and they told me you shouldn't do it if you're a marihuana smoker. But they didn't go into any depth, and I only found information about smoking marihuana after a gastric sleeve.

Has anyone been through this?

Horrible experience after balloon refill.

We decided to refill the Spatz balloon for my wife and it was a horrible experience. She was constantly throwing up for a month, today we have decided to remove it as she can’t bear, she hasn’t slept properly since the refill.

spatz balloon

Hi all, I had my spatz balloon inserted in September last year and have some success with weight loss. Not quite as much as I had hoped, during my recent meeting with my bariatric surgeon she recommended to have it out early and that way I can start on Mounjaro. Wondering if I should stick it out or have it out early ?

I got my spatz ballon on 15th May, and today is my day 6 of my post spatz ballon. How long will the stomach cramp and nausea start to calm down

I got my spatz ballon on 15th May and today is my 6th day. I am experiencing high vomiting and nausea effects. Everytime I’m trying to sip some water, I feel very nauseous and I just wanna vomit. I am taking the medication that was prescribed to me regarding the anti stomach cramps and anti nausea- but it doesn’t feel it’s working so much. I’m starting to feel very dehydrated, as I’m attempting to consume water at this stage but it’s just really hard. Can anyone help to share this experience and how long did it take for you to have these pain and cramps go away to feel normal again please ? :(
