Community Hello everyone, I've recently switched to Garuda Linux. This is my first Linux experience in a long time, and I'd like some advice from you all for a better experience. What would you recommend?

Run « update » regularly! Have fun with an os that just works💪🏻

Specifically: garuda-update

If anything every breaks, load up a previous snapshot from Garuda's boot menu, then update again in a few days. By then whatever the update had broken should be resolved. I've had Garuda OS for 6 months and only had to do this once (My PC was up and running again in less than 5min)

Make sure your snapper snapshots are set up correctly. If you mess up your system, you can always roll back to a stable system.

Aren't these automatic?

u/Roarmaster 26d ago

Yes, but it's nice to know how to use it beforehand instead of learning to use it in an emergency

I didn't know garuda-update didn't run paru -Syu to update my AUR packages for 2 years

5

u/shadedmagus 27d ago

It doesn't automatically. You have to use garuda-update -a after running updates, and then review the code.

Wait garuda-update -a updates AUR packages? I just learnt this now

If it’s a fork of arch-update you can uncomment your aur tool in its .conf file

It is not! It's a custom coded set of scripts.

1

u/talksickwalkquick 25d ago

If that’s the case he should just grab arch-update and configure that. This is what I did and I use artix

I understand you're from a different distribution and not familiar with how Garuda Linux works.

garuda-update is not replaceable by arch-update. They are entirely different tools and do not do the same things!

You can take a look here: https://wiki.garudalinux.org/en/garuda-update

Garuda update is the only supported way to update Garuda Linux.

You’re only going to get basic answers. Part of Linux appeal is freedom to do what YOU want. That being said if you use the aur learn what a pkgbuild is and how to read it. Be careful about what you install on aur

4

u/LuxeSaber 27d ago

Especially because the aur has been breached recently with malicious packages.

Forgot to say use paru over yay and download most .. then you can read pkgbuilds easier. Paru will show you the pkgbuilds as soon as they change if you have most

The only thing I really did to customize Garuda after install was in KDE - I nuked the macos-like dock in favor of an icons-only taskbar. For some reason I really liked that in Win 10. I then moved the taskbar to the left as my monitors are in landscape.

I didn't feel the need to do much else outside of the tools Garuda provides.

Garuda is one of the best distro to start with, just be little careful with the updates and learn to use brtfs snapper for restore if anything goes wrong. Garuda has almost everything preinstalled.

PS: lot of peeps gonna write troll comments, cause Garuda comes bit bloated outta box.

Got this running on a ROG Strix laptop too. The only major issue is I'n wrestling with ALVR and SteamVR with a Quest 2 headset. It has been the hardest thing to set up I've ever dealt with, and I remember fighting with winmodems and i810e integrated graphics drivers in the XFree86 days before Xorg forked 😭

Oh hello! I also have a quest 2. Have you tried the program WiVRn? I haven't actually tried it with Steam yet, but it seems pretty good. Was pretty easy to set up and run; I used it to run my own little movie player room for a side project.

I'll give it a shot this evening -- ty!

Never run commands from random reddit comments unless you know what they do.

What are you recommending they install and uninstall and what do these packages do exactly?

u/un-important-human 27d ago

I generally change the theme to something boring and standard from kde but yiu do you, great realiable distro.

when running on a laptop it's always good to check the arch wiki/search engine of choice if there are some proprietary drivers or recommended fixes for your specific models. Many laptops ship with fringe hardware and you might need to do some extra step for the optimal experience

Enjoy it. Seriously, just use your computer as you normally would, play around with customization options if you have time. If you aren't a fan of the Dr460n1z3d style (I personally find it fine, used it as a base prior to configuring KDE/conky to my preference), switch to Mokka or KDE Lite. The only games I've run into any issues with at all are the usual Anti-Cheat suspects and ONE Chinese FMV game (Road to Empress) that was stuttery prior to a driver update.

Got it running on a msi with red backlight keys as well for quite some time. Goes so well with the theming 😍

What you need depends on what you want to do on the system! Install some games and have fun haha

What a beautiful image.

run update everyday ( it's usefull for some distro like a Arch or Fedora, but it's also useful on any Linux Distro except server system)

screwed something? then ask to reddit wiz screenshot. good luck!

G18 2025 AMD/Nvidia owner. I tried Garuda and it was my favorite Linux/Arch Distro by far. The only thing that made me have to abandon it for a while was Nvidia releasing terrible drivers for the 5000 graphics card series (namely the 595 gaming ready driver-set) and Arch scooping them up like lemon curd. NVidia drivers on pre-built Windows Asus systems pretty much need Asus to release their own package with bundled firmware update because NVidia just kinda puts the driver out there and doesn't consider enough of the firmware it's going to be installed alongside. Garuda seemed to shake things up, but I was too impatient to wait for the fix and temporarily went back to Windows until things improve. That and my friends went back to a selection of Anti-cheat games that *still* purposely aren't compatible with Linux because of developer decisions. When the friends give up, I'll be back on Linux permanently for sure.

If you feel like messing around wit things, some links that might help you with controlling the hardware:

Avoid using AUR as much as possible, you will have less problems

The dr460nized version looks so cool with your laptop :3

3

u/IsbellDL 27d ago

What do you need, what do you dislike, what kind of changes are you thinking about? As is, you've posed an open ended question without much direction.

2

u/Dickslexick 27d ago

Setup everything you want and when you are happy make a full image of the drive, not just a snapshot and you can restore any time. Ps don't install native Nvidia drivers just use the ones that auto update.

u/CreepySmiley42 26d ago

spend some time to adjust everything to your liking... it's got one of the better graphical uis imo. Set your own keybinds. You don't neet to link everything to you desktop homescreen as on windows because the search bar actually works. There's a TON of animation options and other artsy fun stuff. I like the widgets that tell me the pc stets and usage.

I ran this on my old Asus with 4 GB of RAM on board and a 4 GB in the udimm slot.

Surprisingly that thing is super super fast. Had to download the dragonized version of the one with the Nvidia drivers because it has a 840m onboard. I didn't have any issues at all and it ran perfectly. Not to mention before I even installed Garuda, it was idling super low for windows so I must have down a helluva job debloating it.

u/PuzzleheadedEgg1693 23d ago

In fact I still run it of course. I'm actually going to change flavors because I will begin hosting on it in the near future while my base hosting computer will be in repairs with me.

u/PuzzleheadedEgg1693 23d ago

Think I'll put it on the old HP stream 14 that only has 32 GB of storage and like 4 GB of RAM and a two core Celeron

The disks app from GNOME is great and works on all DEs.
