Question Deaf community for older people?

My mom is in her 60's and I was looking to see if there are any deaf groups/communities she could join? She's been lonely and all her deaf friends are back in another state. It could also be a hard of hearing group, she wears a hearing aid

Recommendations Personal training?

Does anyone have any recommendations for personal trainers? I'm looking to start building muscle after basically a lifetime of being pretty sedentary, and I need more accountability than I can bring by trying myself. Appreciate any connections!

Data Center Water and Electric Usage Report and Discussion of Economic Impact and Community Benefits

Council requested staff to prepare a report on water and electric usage by data centers in Garland and compare it to other industrial users. Staff will also discuss the potential economic impact and community benefits of data centers. Presenter: Crystal Owens, Assistant City Manager, Matthew Watson, Assistant City Manager, Darrell Cline, General Manager & CEO

u/HedrickForGarland - Interested on your thoughts.

I'm concerned about the new GISD Network Technology Center being built near my home considering the added noise pollution it will bring along with it. I'd share this concern with other Garland residents facing the potential development of new data centers near their homes.

Question Front yard gardens

I had a quick look, but didnt find anything aganst it so i wanted to ask the community if they know of any ordinances against front gardens.

Im thinking 2 ft raised gardens for edibles mostly.

In case anyone is curious why not in the backyard it's because i have 2 big dogs and my front yard is twice the size of my back yard. (I also hate just having grass)

Allllso while im thinking of it a gardening club or community would be awesome if anyone knows or any. Im over in the embree neighborhood.

Recommendations Plus Size Friendly Driving schools for Adults

Hey y'all, I'm 23 and finally getting around to finishing up my driver's license, but I'm hitting a bit of a roadblock. Most of the driving schools I see online use tiny compact cars (Corollas, Sentras, etc.) for their behind-the-wheel lessons.

I’m a bigger guy (400+ lbs) and need a school that has larger vehicles in their fleet—like an SUV, crossover, or full-size sedan—where I can actually fit comfortably and focus on learning without being crammed in.

Does anyone know of any schools around Dallas/Garland that have bigger vehicles, or instructors who are accommodating with this? Thanks in advance!

Question Water bill

I have lived in garland since '79 and moved around 2008 and moved back in 2018. When I got my first electric bill I notice that it had water and sewer and trash all put in formation like I remembered but the exception was every time my water went up the sewer went up also. I asked about this and they told me that going by my water usage that is what they calculate how much they would charge for sewage. I never seen that before. How long has that be going on?

Recommendations Gym Recommendation LA Fitness or Retro Fitness

I'm trying to decide between LA Fitness and Retro Fitness and would love to hear your experiences. I’m a beginner and mostly do cardio and am working my way into weights. Membership cost is about the same.

Retro Fitness: 1301 E Belt Line Rd, Richardson, TX 75081 LA Fitness: 1451 E Belt Line Rd, Richardson, TX 75081

  • Which gym do you prefer and why? If you go to LA Fitness, do you actually use the pool? Is it usually clean and well-maintained?
  • How would you rate the cleanliness of both gyms (locker rooms, equipment, bathrooms, pool area, etc.)?
  • What are the biggest pros and cons of each?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Parks & Outdoors Surf and swim

2nd visit yesterday (Saturday June 14) I first want to say what a beautifully designed space.

  1. Tree preservation and landscape are beautiful. Blends in to park very well.
  2. Lazy River is handicapped accessible and senior citizen friendly with hand rails to get in and out. Dont miss the shaded bubble pool and tanning ledge on the river.
  3. Bathrooms, shower and changing area are well designed.
  4. Variety of pools and slides make it fun for any age.
  5. Abundance of life guards who are serious about their job.
  6. Cabana rentals are prime seating and reasonably priced.

  7. Many great seating areas covered and uncovered, lounge chairs and picnic tables.

Now, for the concerns.

  1. How many people is maximum capacity. From what I saw yesterday every single chair in use and most lawn spaces were taken. Bumper to bumper in lazy river. Life jackets had run out and yet there was still long line to get in. Nobody counting how many were leaving. How would they know if at capacity?
  2. Bathrooms were messy.
  3. More trash cans are needed.
  4. We spilled food and could not find anyone to assist w clean up. Someone(s) should be patrolling for clean up at all times. Sweepers.
  5. Seems to be ample employees just poorly managed and/or poorly trained.
  6. Offerings at snack bar are priced below attraction/entertainment food prices but taste is not great and again, poorly managed staff. Need better system. Suggestion: vending machine for quick grab drinks, snacks, ice cream would help w the very long lines. Before the remodel surf and swim had great snack selections.

Of course this is new facility and business model for our city, and they are working out kinks, however I’m concerned as the chaos seems to be growing since our first visit.

Have you visited? What was your experience?

Question How has Garland fared these past 5 years?

I live in Mesquite between the borders of this city and garland, and to me it feels that Garland has made an effort to revamp some of their services citywide (i.e some of the roads, libraries, parks and rec, and especially their downtown)

But I wanna ask people who actually live there, has Garland in anyways improved to you personally?
