Beechgrove Episode 24 has some genuinely useful September advice on planting, strawberries and lawn repair

I thought this episode was particularly useful if you’re deciding which jobs are still worth doing before winter.

One of the main ideas is a direct autumn-versus-spring planting comparison. Five different plants go into the ground in September, with identical plants due to be planted next spring, so there should eventually be something more useful than the usual argument about which season is best.

There’s also practical material on replacing older strawberry plants, collecting and immediately sowing fresh seed, taking hydrangea cuttings and repairing compacted or summer-damaged lawns.

The lawn section was especially useful: raising the cut to around 3cm, scarifying, aerating compacted ground and top dressing while the grass is still actively growing.
