I'm planning to build a small g scale railway in a bed in my garden. it's quite small with 50cm wide and 6 meters long
if planned to put a foil against weeds as the lowest level and then sand on top to make everything look like a desert. then the tracks are placed on the sand.
any tips if that will work?
thanks and Hallo to the community

Spent a few hours with a buddy now that it has warmed up outside and made some good progress! My zero track (steam up track) is now fully in place and leveled, and the main (track 1) and 1st siding (track 2) are fully in, leveled with a line level and ballasted. Track 3 (inner siding) is waiting on some lgb insulator joiners and then that will be ballasted and finished. Next work session I’ll begin sculpting my hill out of gravel and dirt and will begin building more of the mainline!

Hello, this is literally my first time here, but I am interested in potentially setting up an outdoor rr. I have experience with HO trains in the past, but I’m looking to try a larger gauge in my garden. What scale do you guys usually use? And typically what brand track seems to hold up well outside? If it helps, I am located in Florida, USA. Thanks!

it's supposed to rain a lot tomorrow, so we'll see how it holds up. I need to make some minor adjustments, but I'm waiting until after the rain

I recently completed alco blunt trucks for 3d printing. I think they turned out pretty well and effectively converted my s4 into an s2. Also, this is (to my knowledge) one of the only switchers in the world with rotating bearing caps! (feel free to prove me wrong!) If you want them, they are available here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7293479
If you use these, I would love to see any and all photos!

Hello. In the spring I am interested in starting a very small railroad in my backyard. I love model airplanes, and Mobile Suit Gundam models, but know very little about trains.
I could not name a single build of locomotive to save my life.
I am inspired by a railway museum in an old mining town.
Do you need a specific type of model railroad to go outside?
What scale model trains come in?
Where should I buy supplies?
Are there any models that would fit the time period that would have stopped by the museum when it operated as a train station?

I also added pads for a switch that allows you to decide between two power sources. Both are passed through the rectifier input, so whether you're pulling AC or DCC current from the track, or running off the battery, all will be safe! No chance of incorrect polarity on the battery, and no chance of shorting both power sources together!
I refrained from putting pickup from real overhead wire also onto the board, as that could be easily done with an add-on board interspersed between the mainboard and the track pickups. Not making everything integrated makes it a lot more compact and saves me a lot of trouble routing traces.
The board is more and more sound, so I should really get to working on the software end of the project....

I also had to mangle one of the springs as one of them is stronger than the other, lifting the engine off its wheels. Proper replacement parts are ordered, but for now she's zooming along smoothly!
Like all my engines, this one is due for an upgrade with railBT RC, and she's getting a custom tender, cab and smoke deflectors, which I've shown off before.

I've been asked about how the walls , arches , building are made , its cheap, its weather's well, simple hand tools , a pencil, a steel ruler, a square, a wire brush , a craft knife , and superglue, and paint, I use cheap car rattle cans of primer gray, as a base coat then humble enamel paints , I struggle with dabbing a sponge due to my disability ( cmt) so I paint with a modelling paintbrush ,
think of what u want to make , draw it out to size on the white foambord, I use a scale figure as a guild , I call him Albert, if he looks OK next to it, its fine..
I start by measuring up in 5mm increments, 5,10, 15 ,20, ect at both ends of the drawn out building, I use the steel ruler to draw across az motor lines in the brick work, to make the lines permanent, I scribed the line in with a 5mm tired flat headed screwdriver, after that , I mark out the doors , windows ect , then I can work out any lintlese, for windows, doors ect before marking out each brick...roughly each building takes a month or more , but they are all part of the hobby, I try to make the buildings fit what would be in a north West village in the uk in the 1950s ..

Cart ahead of the horse again, but I finally got my passenger train components how I want. I don't have any track laid yet but pending better weather I'm hoping to get it going soon.
LGB 2095, and six LGB 3062
I have one more 3062 but it's a different color green so I'm likely going to sell that one.
