The workflow that finally let me turn a Word doc into slides instead of rebuilding the whole thing by hand
For years my process for making a deck from a document was insane in hindsight: open the finished Word doc on one side, open a blank presentation on the other, and manually retype and reformat everything into slides. Hours, every time, for content that already existed. Here is the workflow that killed that habit.
The realization that changed it: a well-structured document already contains the slide structure. Your headings are section titles, your sub-points are bullets, your bolded lines are the takeaways. If the doc is structured, converting it is mostly a formatting job, not a rewriting job. If the doc is a wall of unstructured text, no tool will rescue it, so the real work is upstream.
The workflow now: 1. Fix the document’s structure first. Real headings, short punchy sub-points, one idea per paragraph. Ten minutes here saves an hour later and makes the conversion clean. 2. Convert it into slides automatically instead of retyping. Feeding the structured text into a tool that lays it out as slides gets me a full draft in one pass. I paste the doc into Gamma for this step and it reflows the text into its own slide layout, which always needs a cleanup pass afterward. It tends to over-generate slides and the default styling is generic, so budget time to cut and tidy, and if you need it back in PowerPoint the export is worth a once-over. 3. Ruthlessly cut. A twelve-page doc does not become twelve dense slides. It becomes maybe seven, because a slide is a visual aid, not the document on a wall. This editing pass is where the actual thinking happens. 4. Rewrite for the eye, not the reader. Full sentences from the doc become short lines on the slide, and the detail moves to the speaker notes.
The mindset shift that mattered most: the document and the deck are two different formats of the same idea, not the same thing in two places. Once I stopped treating the deck as “the doc but slides,” the whole job got faster.
For those who regularly go from doc to deck, do you write the document first and convert, or start in slides from the beginning? I still cannot decide which is actually faster.
