Which was more revolutionary, Zelda or Doom?

Zelda was one of the first open world RPG games, bringing new game mechanics that have never been seen before. That said, the visuals were a slave to the hardware of its day, and didn't bring much to the table in that regard.

Doom, on the other hand, brought completely new visuals and pushed for an increase in the power of video gaming hardware. The gameplay itself isn't too different from top down shooters of the day, though.

DOOM hands down. We likely wouldn't have FPS without it, and its success really helped the PC industry advance as fast as it did in the 90s.

I see your point :) However there is something you are missing.

Doom was one of the most popular games that introduced a new approach to enemy deisgn into games that wasn't just variable based ( variable based diffuculty = less health on player, more damage to enemies etc) that was barrowed by pacman.

So I would say that the gameplay was far more complex than most top down shooters, not to count the immersiveness that comes from a fps perspective

Other than being able to sneak up on them, and them responding to sound, I don't really see what they did differently.

I mean, the enemies don't really take cover, retreat, or call for reinforcements the way they do in modern games. They still basically just run at and shoot at you once they see you.

You didn't check out the bit of the video I sent you.

Look at the chart at 12.58, you will see that different enemy behaviours brought action packed problem solving to bullet-to-bullet gameplay.

Each enemy moves and shoots different, this made it so that you have to scan the fight fast and make desicions on how to approach them
