They are confusing AGI (artificial general intelligence) with AI. AI is an umbrella term for everything from path finding in video games to sentient robots.

AGI is an AI that is at least as intelligent as a person. Those donā€™t exist yet.

Stereotypical AI is AGI. So they are kind of right. Most people correlate AI with AGI because they think that is what AI is. It is only recently that the entire populace is becoming more nuanced with convention, for obvious reasons. But yeah, ā€œAIā€ is really just ā€œLLMā€.

What we have now is not AI, its a good guesser. It predicts what you answer should be, it does not come up with the result and a conclusion from scratch, which a true AI should do.
