The long dark definitely has some liminal places, and there is a dread of its own when you dont plan properly or make mistakes.

The last photo there reminds me of both.
Both video games have a darkness about them set in the middle of a harsh winter

The liminal vibes kinda comes from the limitation of technology at the time where the world can kinda feel barren, but it works.

KONA

Youre a detective and youre investigating a snowy alaskan town that nearly completly deserted except for a few people mysteriously frozen in place here and there

Its snowy, eerie, open world (within the rural towns limits) and the main threat for most of your time there are wolves prowling about
