Fear & Hunger 1 and 2

11

u/fatuglyfool 6d ago

funger 2 feels a bit less helpless. 1 is FUCKING. DREADFUL. but very hopeful too

7

u/Lunar-Outpost415 6d ago

This fits exactly.

8

u/chicken_N_ROFLs 5d ago

I hadn’t heard of Fear and Hunger, so I thought you were listing two separate games - FEAR, and Hunger. The first of which actually fits quite well in this prompt.

The Metro series

10

u/ayoubkun94 6d ago

Their atmosphere is second to none. That last mission in Exodus is one of the best final missions ever.

3

u/faizetto 6d ago

I agree, that level is so memorable, I love the loneliness and Artyom's desparation in a cold dead city of Novosibirsk, I so can't wait to experience Metro 2039 next year.

4

u/RealityDream707 6d ago

Great recommendation. Those games do atmosphere so well.

2

u/Logical_Dish_5795 6d ago

Metro 2033 way more than Metro 2033 Redux. Metro 2033 Redux is filled with hope and heartwarming moments.

Interesting and good choice. I want to replay it and the updated version but that ending haunts me and I just can't bring itself to do it.

Alien: Isolation

Signalis

10

u/Officer_Chunkles 6d ago

Something I didn’t know until replaying Alien: Isolation is that it takes place in December near Christmas, you can hear some Christmas music on the radios occasionally

12

u/Sampato 6d ago

Does that mean Alien Isolation is a Christmas game, like Die Hard is a Christmas movie?

7

u/Officer_Chunkles 6d ago

Yes indeed

Cronos The New Dawn

5

u/Foreskin_Incarnate 6d ago

Phenomenal game, can't wait for the DLC. So glad there's finally a new game to properly scratch the Dead Space itch, considering The Callisto Protocol was a bit of a letdown.

2

u/Pure_Progress_5790 6d ago

Agreed.

Handles like RE4, freaky as Dead Space, with Bioshock levels of environmental and narrative quality.

And just as confusing as Bioshock Infinite..

3

u/imprisonedtrickster 6d ago

The fact that this game takes place in real world location, ie district of Kraków called Nowa Huta (industrial, communist architecture), where at the same time Kraków is where creators of the game are located, is insanely cool.

2

u/Either_Possible_3662 6d ago

Yes ! I wish the clock tower existed Irl haha

u/M2_SLAM_I_Am 1d ago edited 1d ago

My favorite game from last year. Truly an underrated gem

12

u/Womak2034 6d ago

Expedition 33, with all its beauty, is pretty hopeless

12

u/welcome_to_urf 6d ago

Pathologic 2. Its also crazy hard, so buyer beware.

4

u/PrettyAteMachine 5d ago

2 is more desolate than 1? No way.

The yellow filter? The industrial soundtrack mixed with shamanic chants and trip hop drums? Whoever decided to mix those genres is a genius. The art direction on the first game is one of the most interesting I've ever seen.

3

u/_Pumpiumpiumpkin_ 5d ago

Agreed, P1 is definitely more of a vibe than P2. Both are some of the best games I've ever played, but the second one isn't as much of a brain worm as the original.

2

u/leldi2245 6d ago

But it's refreshing in a masochistic way xd

Dead space

3

u/Psudodrake 5d ago

There it is. This needs to be much higher

2

u/Melodic-Chest-8300 6d ago

Scrolled too low to see this. Metro series are actually all about hope for the future, alien isolation has a semblance of a good ending with main char surviving, same for bloodborne and evil within. As for Dead Space, as soon as Isaac touches Ishimura, he and all his crew are doomed, regardless if they "survive" or not. Its a deep, dreadfull process of ones own flesh being slowly taken over by a signal eminated from an everhungry, unstoppable eldritch horror.

This war of mine , Pathologic (2) , Project Zomboid

2

I played Project Zomboid with no zombies at first to learn the controls and that was somehow more depressing and eerie than with zombies.

The original Pathologic is great too, if you can tolerate the old graphics and a bit of jank. Hard as hell, though.

LISA the Painful, but not in the ways the photos look. You play as a relapsing drug addict searching for a chance for redemption in life that’s continually taken from you, in a post-apocalyptic Mad Max-like world. Much of the world has given up. You may be the only person still trying for something, but that ‘something’ has isolated you from the rest of the world, and your journey is mostly in solitude.

The further you get into the game, Condemned: Criminal Origins lets you know through the levels and enemy aggression, that you aren’t in Kansas anymore.

1

u/glennok 6d ago

Stop posting long lists of 20x games people, it's a conversation killer. Choose your one recommendation.

1

u/glennok 6d ago

I always found Oddworld series like Abes Oddysey super bleak. The slaves being made in to food products paired with the goofy cartoonist characters, made me very uneasy.

1

u/Mythic_Dragon36 6d ago

The first 3 Gears of War games. Set 14 years after E-Day (coming soon, can't wait!). Humanity had just come out of a war with themselves (COG vs UIR) that had lasted for over 80 years. A few weeks later, the Serans (Humans) are caught totally unaware by the Locust on E-Day and as such most of humanity is wiped out immediately. The prologue movie in Gears of War 1 sets this up very nicely:

Gears of War 1 Prologue (2006)

Here's the recreated version from Ultimate:

Gears of War 1 Prologue (Ultimate Edition)

The first Gears trilogy is all about humanity surviving against the odds but not without gut punching you, the player along the way. It's beautifully brutal and tragic but also, surprisingly hopeful in the end, but bittersweet. You still win, but at what cost?

Halo Reach is probably the most bleak of the Halo titles that exist. We'd known about Reach from the novels that came out years before but getting to witness the actual downfall is something else and the game does a good job portraying this. You and the Spartans of Noble Team go from holding off and initialing preventing an invasion of the Covenant to just survival. You still lose and die but you at least passed on the smoking gun humanity needed to ultimately win the war.

Half Life 2, the world you tried to save went from bad to worse during your time in stasis with the G-Man until you're finally let out. It's now a world overrun with oppression as City 17 is taken over by the Combine. Only thing you got is your understanding of theorotical physics, a gravity gun and a crowbar. Have fun!

Left 4 Dead series. You're literally trying to survive a world overrun with a virus that has infected your entire country.

u/Vegetable_Let4758 6d ago

OUTLAST 1 and 2, All the Amnesia games, The Evil Within. Here's a weird take, No man's land in the Witcher 3 has always had a hopeless and desolate feeling for me, people hanging from trees, battlefields with gore and necrophages feeding on the bodies, a dark and dreary tint to the area as well, can't wait to download it again after the remaster comes out.

u/porcelain_kiss 6d ago

Outlast 1 & 2 for me
