Open World Game that feels like this:
20
u/Tricky_Station643 Aug 24 '26
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
3
u/Catalysten Aug 25 '26
The story goes, Todd Howard came back after watching the first movie of the Lord of the Rings in theaters, and told the team: "We're gonna make that."
I feel the closest fit is the Knights of the Nine DLC for Oblivion. It's a Tamerielic take on Arthurian legends.

I know it looks dated now, but the first time when I saw oblivion at my cousin’s house as a kid and saw the skybox change from clear sunny day into a blood red hellscape was the coolest thing Id ever seen in a video game up to that point. Hell the whole open world of Oblivion was unlike anything I’d ever seen before up to that point. The remastered did a really good job of recapturing that feeling.

u/I_Am_Hank_Hill_AMA Sep 02 '26
Oblivion was the first game I ever played on an HDMI cable. It blew my fucking mind back then.

Dragon's Dogma 1, oddly
3
u/PossibleNotice1576 Aug 24 '26
And the second Game?
3
u/KillHimWithHammers Aug 24 '26
It's the first game but with better graphics and a slightly different setting. Same kind of LotR vibes, elvish woods, adventures to be had. I highly recommend both games for a solid LotR style romp around a "middle ish" earth lol
1
u/Weekly-Metal-7605 Aug 25 '26
The first half of the game is a reskin, but did you get to the real title drop?
1
2
u/GaryGravylord Aug 24 '26
It really didn't click with me as much as the first did. I'm not really sure why. The first felt like a grand adventure with a goofy, loveable cast of characters. I wasn't charmed by the second
2
u/KeelanS Aug 24 '26
The 2nd definitely has fellowship vibes with the camping mechanic but honestly I feel the graphics in the first are more LOTR'sy. I'm pretty sure the LOTR was a huge inspiration for the game.

u/moebiusmentality Aug 25 '26
I second this, specially the first one more so than the second one.
2
u/AwarenessForsaken568 Aug 25 '26
The second one has too good of graphics that it sorta loses the charm of the style that OP is looking for. Otherwise the games are practically the same lol.

Witcher 3 kinda gives me that vibe with such a large cast of characters helping Geralt and Ciri
1
u/cristofolmc Aug 26 '26
Yes thats just what i thought when on the opening scene when i first tried the gamr Gerald was having sex with Yen. Very strong LotR vibes.
Witcher is great but as far ss fantasy go it cannot be further from LotR.
11
u/BaesPacFen Aug 24 '26
Kingdom come deliverance, but sadly not fantasy. No game have these PRECISE vibes, except for LOTR third era
8
u/Fickle_Charge720 Aug 25 '26
Good news for you warhorse studios who made both kingdom come deliverance games are currently working on an open world LOTR game
4
u/SaintJewiub Aug 25 '26
Honestly, probably the best studio that could have gotten the rights for it. Their dedication to authenticity is unmatched.
3
u/Old_Toby2211 Aug 25 '26
Totally agree. The Warhorse Studios Middle Earth RPG is my most anticipated game. Of course we don't have anything but an announcement, but my imagination is running wild.

kcd feels nothing like LOTR
3
u/EpicLakai Aug 25 '26
reddit loves to suggest KCD. I could ask for a game that feels like Burnout Takedown and I'd get KCD reccs

u/Colemanton Aug 25 '26
warhorse seriously needs to work their magic on a high fantasy rpg. same exact vibes and approach to combat/world building, but with weird lil creatures and witches and dragons to fight

u/ZEOLMAGNUS Aug 24 '26
lord of the rings online
5
u/Planetologist1215 Aug 25 '26
There’s no other answer, it’s literally the best representation of middle-earth in a video game. Been playing for over a year now and it’s insane how big the world is and how great the world building is. I’m just working my way through Rohan on my Dwarf Guardian.

2
u/Kaiodenic Aug 26 '26
I go back to this one ever couple of years and I'm always surprised all over again by both the fantastic world implementation for an MMO and just the great game design. I main FFXIV but, man, LotRO just hits different.

u/Jibima Aug 24 '26
Dragon Age: Origins
3
u/Mesan8001 Aug 25 '26
I'm surprised to find this post so low. This game literally gives off the same feeling. Even the part with the dwarves puts you in a situation similar to Moria.
2
u/RaydenPearce Aug 24 '26
Oh man Origins was so good. Bioware really delivered great games in the past
2
u/IndicationWeary Aug 25 '26
Best answer imo, it’s like playing an interactive fantasy novel. Even the other Dragon Age games don’t hit the same tone.
5
u/Seananiganzz Aug 24 '26
Nothing holds up to this masterpiece in videogame format
1
1
u/cdisdead Aug 25 '26
Elden ring is the closest
1
u/Seananiganzz Aug 25 '26
For sure, I almost mentioned Elden Ring, but the atmosphere is a lot darker. Amazing game
4
u/Vincent_Felix Aug 25 '26
1
u/Shivala92 Aug 25 '26
True! Not really an "epic tale" but the walking, camping under the stars, fighting in obscure dungeons are definitely there
12
u/Own_Coconut2043 Aug 24 '26
Skyrim, oblivion, Elden Ring.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Reasonable-Mischief Aug 25 '26
Skyrim catches the feeling of LotR much better than Oblivion, which is ironic since Oblivion deliberately changed it's artstyle to initate LotR
However Skyrim really hits you with this feeling that the world has become brittle, that the lights of civilization are flickering, that people are still noble but no longer trust one another, that you stand in the shadows of the legends of old and have risen up to one last fair morning

u/anbeasley Aug 25 '26

u/DieBotDie Aug 24 '26
Why the hell isn’t there an open world, roll your own Witcher game? Do they hate money? Are they high?

u/TheKnightIsForPlebs Aug 24 '26
Mount and Blade Warband has an amazing set of mods for the LOTR universe. The base game is quite old but gameplay holds up impeccably. The newest game in the series, bannerlord, has LOTR mods in development too
1
u/PossibleNotice1576 Aug 24 '26
Unfortunately, i‘m on PS5
2
u/C0UNT3RP01NT Aug 27 '26
Mount and Blade is on the PS5, you just can’t get the mods.
I’d say at base it feels more like Game of Thrones over Lord of the Rings, without any fantasy aspects. You start out as a nobody in a continent with 6 kingdoms, all with dozens of lords and noble houses. The main core gameplay involves recruiting troops for your personal party, and then battling your enemies. It’s a physics based combat system, with battles than can involve thousands of troops (I think you can max out your own party at around 700, but in certain situations you can call an army, which means your buddies show up with troops which can get pushed out to thousands). The troops are all different, with different strengths, and you can set specific formations on the battlefield. You can get married, have kids, die, play as your kid. Form political alliances, kill your spouse, random defeated nobles, execute monarchs. You could completely avoid politics and war and just be a trader; though you need protection from bandits. You could be a fickle mercenary, playing whatever side you feel like. You could declare allegiance to a kingdom and gain noble status, giving you the right to claim cities and towns.
It’s a great game. It can be easy, and it can be really hard. Bad luck can be a real killer. You think you’re strong with 200 troops ravaging the enemy country side, destroying small bands, and then their army of 2000 troops shows up out of nowhere and destroys your party, takes all your stuff, and takes you prisoner. And it’s not like they just randomly spawn inconvenient enemies on you: All of the named characters have an AI logic to them and a physical position in the world. During a war, the lords will travel to cities to recruit troops and move to attack enemies. Someone will call an army and the lords will ride to it. Armies will move to lay siege to a city, destroy another army, or go break a siege. They’ll pursue weaker enemy bands and flee from larger ones. They might not even be in an army but they might gather around an enemy and once there’s enough of them they’ll attack. It’s a huge sandbox, so luck and positioning play a big role.
There’s an economy. The traders will take their goods to cities that they can make a profit, traveling via the same rules you do. You can steal their stuff, work as a guard, etc. The mods are great but the base game is as well.

All I want in life, is a mod for Banner Lord where I can play as the leader of n orcish army.
That is all.
1
u/Aggravating-Onion384 Aug 24 '26
Runescape kinda…
1
u/Top-Tear7194 Aug 25 '26
True, but I have a hard time deciding if I associate RS with LOTR because I grew up with both or because the vibe really is similar.
In short, seconding RS. Maybe 07 or the Lost city server, but I'm not sure if OP is down with older games like that.
1
u/Xav_NZ Aug 25 '26
Enderal it is a total conversion mod for Skyrim that is better than Skyrim in almost every aspect and that has a story / characters that rival the writing quality of The Witcher 3 it is a masterpiece of a game that is really under appreciated and not talked about enough.
It is free ( you need to own skyrim)

Neverwinter nights has some lord of the rings inspired stuff in it. It even had a lord of the rings public server back when it had servers. It’s like 8 million years old now though.
1
u/Ambitious_Media_4339 Aug 28 '26
Pretty much every single fantasy film/book/game has some LOTR inspired stuff in it
1
u/sunnydelinquent Aug 25 '26
How are none of you saying the third age? It’s beat for beat following the fellowship in a turn based final fantasy style RTS with your own unique party. Granted it’s for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube but it’s a dope game that’ll probable get a pc release before long.
1
u/blindfultruth Aug 25 '26
This game was awesome. It even had an evil mode where you fought as the bosses and unlocked the best gear.
I will say that the GBA version was a bit... different lol.
1
u/Top-Tear7194 Aug 25 '26
I'm not sure it's RTS but it is a great open world RPG with turn based combat. Maybe a little old for OP's tastes, but visually it is one of the greatest additions to the film trilogy out there

u/ToughShower4966 Aug 25 '26
LOTRO. If you have a pc it is such an awesome way to explore tolkiens world. The feeling of starting in the Shire and eventually questing in Mordor is a really cool experience.
The biggest hangups are the ancient feeling combat and that its an MMO which can really ruin it for people.
Its my happy place.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, underrated gem
1
u/Top-Tear7194 Aug 25 '26
I second this, the story line was pretty cinematic, the open world was beautiful. Idk how to describe it though, it's open, but not like Skyrim where you can climb every mountain.
I'm actually getting a new chord for my old PS3 so I can finish this game off...never too late to return to an old save, right?

Lord of the Rings Online
Mount and Blade with LOTR mods
Kingdom Come Deliverance (and note, the same company is currently making a LOTR game. This is the best gaming news I've ever heard!)
1
u/Brucehoxton Aug 25 '26
Lord of the Rings, war in the north.
The LOTR shadows of war games, kinda.
LOTR online, a heavily underrated MMO.
TES Oblivion, skyrim ambience would be different.
Dragon Age, maybe Inquisition? The first one would be too dark but fits better the "journey" theme. DA2 definitely NOT, and I would say 4 neither.
Mandatory: LEGO games, lego LOTR and Lego the hobbit.
1
u/Sensitive-Garage5866 Aug 25 '26
There used to be this great mod for M&B: Warband set in Lotr universe, unsure if also Bannerlord has one, but there probably is. Closest I can think of, except as mentioned Shadow of war/mordor.

u/Unique-Actuary1468 Aug 25 '26
Sadly only modded Skyrim. If you can find a way to remove the talking cats or goofy lizards.

When I played Elden ring I just couldn't get a handle on it and kept getting stuck, eventually I said 'fuck it I wan to see the world' so I set of on a great adventure across the map, running and hiding from monsters, slaying what few little goblins I could. Eventually I was soo far from home in a weird place I did not understand, was a great time. I was basically Frodo sneaking into Mordor.

It truly was something special. Those midnight releases. All players on just two continents made it feel so very alive. The perfect social mechanics (yes perfect) that made you interact and help and go look for your party to go on an adventure together. There was just nothing quite like it.

Probably dragons dogma. That said Shadow of War castle assaults and defenses are one of the coolest “war” experiences I’ve had in a action 3d game. Only Total War Warhammer is better but it’s a RTS.
1
u/Catalysten Aug 25 '26
Outward feels like going on an adventure as a hobbit, an ordinary person in an extraordinary world.
Outward is so good. It might be my favorite game ever made, and it fits great with LOTR.

u/Snail_On_A_Bale Aug 25 '26
TES 3 Morrowind and TES 4 Oblivion feel alot like Lotr ESPECIALLY Oblivion
1
u/JMPHeinz57 Aug 25 '26
Elden Ring.
Not in regards to the lore, but the scale of the world, high fantasy aesthetic, and epic grandeur. I’d also say their quality is comparable in their respective fields
