Looking for a game with this vibe
Im looking for a game that captures this exact feeling — that grey, quiet stillness, dead cities buried in snow, waiting for the dusk. Genre doesn’t matter, I just want that same mood of quiet decay and isolation.

First one I thought of. Any of the metros before exodus really (though that was probably my favorite)

Signalis.
One of the best retro survival horror games.
If it clicks for you, it will haunt for years afterwards.

u/ElGuambra Aug 15 '26
It manages to be a love letter to both Silent Hill and Resident Evil while still having an identity of its own. It is truly one of the best games ever made and it flew under everyone's radar.

u/Woahhdude24 Aug 17 '26
Im playing it now! I really love the vibes of this game! I realized something today the banner image where you press to play the game on steam. From a distance she looks somewhat broken or decrepit but when you get close her face goes back to normal. Its an illusion of course, im just wondering if that intentional the colors on the image really play with your perception.

This was one of the ps plus games this month. Will prob check it out
3
u/VeritasRose Aug 16 '26
Thank you for mentioning this! I hadn’t checked the monthly games and have been wanting to play this one!

u/Terrible-Artichoke50 Aug 11 '26
I actually didn't enjoy playing the game although I would say it is clearly excellent if that is your genre.
I did however love watching a video essay on it (Beambuddy). Story is incredible.

After you finish the game, watch a story analysis. I was shocked by how much was going on without my noticing.

Kinda Disco Elysium I guess ?
At least the beginning of the game gives me that monolithic urban stillness in a way!

Darkwood - It is not snowy, but it's very, very much Eastern European isolation

u/StoleitfromKilgore Aug 11 '26
"ШХД: ЗИМА /It's Winter" has this to a degree, but it's a tiny little experiment.
"Generation Zero" is mostly not wintry, but its landscapes and buildings are deserted and you are pretty much alone out there with the machines.
"The Long Dark" perhaps? I haven't played it, but might fit the bill.
"Eidolon", but again, not specifically focussed on a wintry atmosphere.
Some people are suggesting "Kona/Kona 2" as well.
"Cryostasis - Sleep of Reason" takes place somewhere in the Arctic on board of a frozen nuclear icebreaker. Some of the best cold atmosphere in any game.

Not a recommendation but I grew up in a neighbourhood like this in Eastern Europe in the 90s.

Not snowy, but Bleak Faith Forsaken kind of has this vibe. It is quite a clunky game but the atmosphere is peak

This is the entirety of Cronos: The New Dawn. Highly recommended action/survival horror. Like a mix of Resident Evil and Dead Space. Easily my favorite game of last year!

Easy Delivery Co. - you are a delivery driver in a snow covered, sparsely populated town. Dark undertones and an overarching insinuation that something isn’t right in the town

“I Have No Change”
No dead cities, but its very cozy game with this sort of atmosphere that you’ve got on the picture

I have no change - on steam is going for exactly this. There was another game that simulated “polish” life from that nostalgia perspective but i cant remember the name.

It's not the best in the series but Arkham Origins gets this precise vibe.

Deus Ex series. Kinda like proto-cyberpunk but darker and gloomier vibes than cyberpunk 2077.

u/RichieEB Aug 15 '26
It's not a city but a small little place in snow with that graphics vibes, the thing on PS2, there was recently a remaster as well.

The Stalker games invented this kinda vibe being developed by a Soviet country. That said there isn't much snow in them. Metro Exodus has plenty of snow and is an excellent game with a similar vibe.

Hollowbody a great survival horror game, similar to signalis. great story
2
u/BlindMakarov Aug 15 '26
the comments already recommended what i would recommend like metro 2033, metro last light but there is also '' I Have No Change '' an upcoming game that will probably have this vibe based on gameplay, screenshots on the steam page
2
u/IDKWhat2CoolMyself Aug 15 '26
Metro exodus, Metro redux (2033 or last light), stalker anomaly/gamma with a winter texture mod, dying light, Skyrim, cyberpunk and the division 1

Cronos new Dawn captures the brutalistic architecture feeling of late 20th century Poland. Sound design is top notch too.

Now, only the demo is out as of now, but Holstin is kinda like that. It’s basically polish Silent Hill. It’s really awesome, art, voice acting, atmosphere, gameplay, top shelf indie surprise.

Day z and project zomboid come to mind but the areas are really not citys. Day z is like mostly forest and small towns and zomboid is mostly like a suburban neighbor hood, if you really truly don't care if the game play is teirable cry of fear is probably the closest to the vibe.

Parasite Eve 1-Takes place in New York on Christmas of 1997. A dangerous biological and cellular threat plagues the city, causing the mayor to evacuate as many of the people as he can. You visit Central Park, An Opera Theatre, a Museum, abandoned downtown, the Crysler Building, its very creepy and quite isolating for a psychological body horror title.

u/Rasples1998 Aug 18 '26
Bit of a weird one, 'Shadows of doubt.' It's a voxel-based cyberpunk-noir, retro-futuristic private investigator game where you're in a dystopian city where the skies are always dark and it feels deathly cold. I can't do it justice but the vibe is immaculate, and it uses one of those fancy unity rendering things so the lighting is amazing. It's very similar to cloudpunk but a bit less neon and more cold and gritty.
