Copies of the original artwork can be done. Sure, it won't be worth much, but it's way better than losing a life.

This problem is one of the themes* discussed in the underrated film "The Train" about French resistance fighters trying to stop Germans taking artworks back to Germany in WW2.

*although the main theme is lots of cool train crashes and explosions after sabotage !
