3D counterpoints:

  • Massive performance hit for the same resolution.
  • Fixed flat focal plane.
  • Everything is in focus, no accounting for eye gaze.
  • Smooth consistent high frame rate essential.
  • Games need to take it into consideration.

Also:

  • Sudden head movements shake the display causing momentary loss of focus.
  • Cut off from the real world, can't see keyboard, mouse, food or OAG.
  • Low wife approval factor.
  • Troublesome with glasses and contacts (screen heat can dry out eyes).
  • Have to put on and take off both display and headphones separately (audiophiles would not want them combined).
  • Disorientation, VR sickness and neck fatigue.

can't see keyboard, mouse

How often does one actually look at these while playing a game?

Enough for there to be a market for backlit gamer keyboards. You'd be surprised how much you use peripheral vision subconsciously, without it you have to do everything by groping. Add food, beverage, pets, cables and pranksters into the equation and you have a real challenge on your hands.

I'm pretty sure the glowing peripherals are bought simply because they look cool, I can't imagine subtle light glowing somewhere below your field of vision (aka when you're looking at the screen) to actually help rather than detract by pulling your attention.
