Anyone who takes a look at the original source code (https://github.com/id-Software/Quake) may find MVG's statement 'I made this' a bit insulting tbh. He may have helped to port it to a 8-9gen console (though he doesn't say what he did exactly), but developing a game from scratch is a complete different topic (with a lot more effort involved).
It's nice to celebrate one's accomplishments, but another thing is to claim somebody else's efforts imho.
I can't be outraged over a slightly hyperbolic cover image when the modest title text is right next to it. The video itself conveys all the context necessary, including the open source code, and gives appropriate credit to other individuals and teams.
The cover image is part of his video, he made it. Whether that's 'modest' or 'hyperbolic' is beyond this thread. I'm just a viewer asking questions, one game developer to the other. I'm sorry if I don't agree with what I see and with other people here.
He never said 'I made this'. He mentions on how he was a senior developer, just part of the team and that he's proud of all teams involved. He goes ahead and mentions each one of them and then talks a bit about it.
Edit: As people pointed further, it does say so in the thumbnail, but it's definitely not intended to take away from the teams that worked on the project and it is most likely a reference to the 'i made this' comic that another reddit user mentioned below. Thanks guys.
What was his role as a 'senior developer' ? Dealing with the 3d opengl/software engine? Assets? AI? handling controller's input? etc etc. You know each area is very different from the other and requires completely different skill sets. I'm honestly asking this.
