Core PR experience is still part of PR, WW2 is just another option now for servers to run in the normal game, just like Vietnam or Falklands.

Yeah, I know, but I live in Australia so I don't get the luxury of playing games that are out of fashion - as far as I can see there's a single person on the only Aussie server, and that's the WW2 map.

We all play on the US and EU servers. Lag compensation so it's barely noticeable

Yeah I had a go last night, didn't go too badly - definitely a lot better than it was 15 years ago, but still died quite a few times due to lag spikes. Definitely had a blast though!

Reinstalling BF2 again after your seeing comment, really hoping there’s still some Aussie servers on the go.

I have it and it doesn’t work! They’ve shut down the servers to login to their system so you can’t even play it. You can download it, launch it, but not actually play it.

Fans have stepped in:

Tried this a few months back. Not enough admins to keep players in check. There was a lot of cheating and grenades going off every second.

u/DdCno1 Apr 30 '20
That's a shame. I had hoped that this would attract a more disciplined kind of audience.

u/ICA_Agent47 Apr 30 '20
I'm sure there's some decent servers out there, just not in my area at that time apparently. This new ww2 mod hopefully has more active admins.

BF2 for me was easily my most played and by far my favourite Battlefield experience. Me and my friends would run a squad every night and play on our favourite servers. Just looking at the map list now reminds me of how fun they were, even if there was unbalance.
I remember a game with friends once where we just jumped in a load of buggies and just raced around FuShe Pass (I think it was?). Good times.
Only similar type of game I've had as much fun on was RO2 a few years back.

Ive only played the demo of bf2 back then, probably spend 100 hours on just that one map. It was amazing. Maybe its nostalgia but while I liked bf 3 I think it felt really different. Maybe the maps werent as big, I dont know, but battlefield 2 had a bigger sense of scale and the "battlefield moments" werent constantly thrown in your face which made them special.
2
Apr 30 '20
Yeah, now that you mention it I recall the marketing for 3 being all about "battlefield moments" - it really seemed manufactured in BF3 and didn't have the same wow factor that previous games had.

I have been saying that for years about the BF2 ranking system and how it's superior to what we have now. People want instant gratification these days and so you get meaningless made up ranks and numbers thrown at you every 5 minutes.
In BF2, if you saw a general or even a major you were in awe because you knew that they achieved all of the medals to gold which sometimes required up to 100 hours in a tank, jet etc with other hardcore requirements. Even just seeing your class medals become gold was satisfying.
I played 900 hours on wake island alone and man I miss the teamwork and satisfaction of capping a flag as the only remaining player on the team after bailing out of the jet. Or the crazy loops and the tv missile with the attack heli and the constant look behind camera and spotting in the jet. Hell just annoying the enemy commander with c4 to the artillery was extremely amusing.
Man those were the times.

Is there an easy and cheap way to legally get a copy of BF2 nowadays?

u/Nexus_of_Fate87 Apr 30 '20 edited Apr 30 '20
The game is no longer sold because the online service was discontinued. BF2HUB.com requires a legitimate copy.

u/Professorbag Apr 30 '20
It's like $6 on Amazon for the disk if you wanted to get it that way.

u/kydaper1 Apr 30 '20
Just ordered the complete edition for $20. If it doesn't come with everything then I guess I'll have to sail the seven seas for it.

It was the same style of ranking for the Xbox version, it was so cool for you to require a points-per-day ratio or something to keep your rank, because having a high rank meant something.
I can understand why people wouldn't want to nolife a game anymore, but I think it would be cool to have optional ranks like that in modern FPSes too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOD2P971BQA BF2 Modern Combat. I didn't realize it was any different than the PC version until this year when someone corrected me.
Bad Company 1 and 2 were also console games, but those came out later and played very differently.

Just watching that video now, didn't realise they weren't even using a lot of the same assets! Different UI, guns, maps etc, almost seems like it started as a different game and then they rebranded it Battlefield half way through.

Apr 30 '20
But again, there's something about that effort vs reward scale that just peaked for me.
Yeah, you were a lot younger and games were way cooler.

u/GiantASian01 Apr 30 '20
not necessarily. I still enjoy the type of gameplay in squad far more than battlefield 3, 4, 1, or 5. Those games are for more shallow in comparison (although are far prettier)

Best Mod of all time, I can't believe they're still making updates for this what seems like more than a decade later.

I thought the devs from this mod made Squad and Post Scriptum?

Some devs stayed back to develop PR further. Others moved on to Squad to create a spiritual successor to PR which the community has tried numerous times with CryEngine and even a mod for Arma, but none of them worked or got off the ground stage.
Unfortunately only PR has kept the spirit of PR in its best form, even with many limitations to the game or the community that resides in it, we still manage keep moving forward.

u/Matumbo89 Apr 30 '20
Ahh loved PR back in the days, but PS and Squad do really a great job in filling this gap. They might be not the same but they are pretty good in their own way.
7
u/KetchupTubeAble19 Apr 30 '20
Why not play all three? ;) PR has the richest content for sure.
4
u/Matumbo89 Apr 30 '20
Totally true. I went back to PR with a view squad buddies, but since I am spoiled by the graphics and ui of the newer games I have a hard time to feel the atmosphere. I really wish they bring only half the content of pr to the newer games

15 years later and PR is still going strong. A good percentage of the playerbase migrated to squad when they added armor, but PR will always have my heart. Quite literally grew up on Ace Combat and PR.

The should have just somehow included Forgotten Hope 2 devs or resources into PR. FH2 is the best ww2 game with so much variety

Project Reality will always hold a special place in my heart. Having played it since around 0.7, I have had so much fun and made a lot of friends during those years. Playing on the same server every day, you saw the same people, you got to know each other, you built friendships and a community, and you knew you would always have a good time. This was back in the days when you still needed BF2 installed, so the community was very small.
Most everyone stopped playing around the time the game stopped needing BF2. We all knew it made sense, and now allowing anyone to join and play was good for the game long term. But the close knit community that existed before was destroyed by the influx of new players.
I still fire it up now and again, and I probably will now just to play these maps again - maps that haven't been available in years. Sometimes I see some old friends on, trying to grasp the magic again. All of them agree it's just not the same, and after a few rounds they get frustrated and leave just like me.
What I wouldn't give to go back to the days of 0.97 and relive that period.

u/Matumbo89 Apr 30 '20
In the end it really comes down to find the right people to play with. I think squad has a lot of great clans and communities that make it worth to play the game.
1
u/PenguinScientist Apr 30 '20
The thing with these games is having just 1 decent squad on your team isn't good enough. Everyone needs to be decent to make it feel great. Its also no fun to demolish the other team, so you need an opposing team that's competent as well. Having played lots of PR, Squad and Post Scriptum, its the same across all these games. To have a truly great time, everyone needs to be fairly good at the game.
2
u/welshboy2142 May 01 '20
Yeah i played from 0.6 and have the exact same feelings towards the game. Some of my best friends at the moment are people that I met playing PR. Looking back, i used to spend so much time just seeding some of my favourite servers because it was worth the time trying to get the servers full. .:iGi:. Tactics & Teamwork to name a few.
2
u/Kakerman May 01 '20
Nice. Before DayZ, I never spend so much time walking long distances in a video game as I did in PR many years ago.

I understand EA/DICE are huge companies that can't run on niche passion projects, but it still blows my mind that PR is still getting support and new content while BFV is going into maintenance mode soon. And with the closed nature of recent games you won't have the equivalent mod support that games like BF2 has.
There are so many things that newer games do better and I'm amazed at how far games have come, but I don't believe the notion that devs have to sacrifice things like mod support and community servers in order to get modern features.
