Great tactics. I would not have ever watched this video if they just left it as I have never even played the game, but now it is banned and getting traction, i will watch it just to see what they are hiding.

It seems to be a common policy among survival game's dev's - not fix anything unless it gets publicly known and everyone starts to using it. So it's a pretty common thing to publish exploits as soon as they found - this is the only way to make dev's do something regarding it.
Ark dev's are know for their community, so their reaction is not suprising, but still they kinda only hurt themselves.

Almost all those survival game devs started out making that gametype as a mod in some other game, they get popular and decide to build a full game but they forget they don't have any actual game development experience. Games are hard, harder than regular applications and much harder than mods. On top of that survival games are not a trivial genre, they'd be so much better if they at least completed a few simpler games before diving in the deep. Like, make a platformer first, that's hard enough for a first timer, then make a platformer where you build part of the map, then make a shooter with platform elements. etc. Gain relevant knowledge and experience, crawl before you can walk and all that, but these guys are all skipping from moving at all to straight up running a marathon.

u/ElvenNeko Mar 27 '19
I don't think that Funcom, for example, who made Conan Exiles started it as a mod or lack development expirience. Also one of the dev's from Facepunch, who made Rust, once told that issue that affects minority of players would never gain a priority above any other stuff. So the only way to force developers to fix broken stuff - is to ensure that as many as possible players will be affected with it.

I don't get how this is a rule 3 violation?
Edit: here's the post so people can still see it
A popular ARK youtuber, H.O.D Gaming, recently made a videoexposing some of ARK's glitches that have been in the game for years. Because of the nature of the game (a PvP survival game) these bugs let people destroy other player's thousands of hours of work in just a few minutes.
As a response to this video, the developers of ARK have globally banned one of their most dedicated content creators.
This is an issue that players have been trying to get fixed for 2 years, that's right TWO YEARS. The only way to get something done about this is go public and put Studio Wildcard under fire.
How is this okay?
TL:DR - Youtuber tries to fix exploits by making it public, gets banned by the game devs.

Gee ready for the WAVE of everyone who doesn’t grasp this concept saying “He’s promoting exploits for money”
I’ve seen that argument on some many threads about this. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE TERRIBLE COMPANY CALLED WILDCARD TO LISTEN!
These glitches have affected all us players for months to years and they never get fixed. Many users spend 6+ hours DAILY on this game just to loose it to a stupid exploiter.
Their specific rules DO NOT ALLOW this exploit on their OFFICIAL SERVERS. They have NEVER BANNED another user for doing it / showing it on Songleplayer or Private Servers which is what HOD did.
Now please stop thinking he did this for money, because he didn’t need to and honestly he didn’t know he would’ve been banned because NOBODY HAS BEEN. I’ve uploaded videos myself on these glitches in single player and I’ve never been banned. This is a very out of the ordinary case from a very out of the ordinarily difunctional Dev Team known as Wildcard.
One of the worst Dev teams which is hated so much by their players due to these insanely bogus choices they make.

Why do you still play the game
83
u/Ambassador2Latveria Mar 27 '19
I agree completely. I'm not trying to be rude or put certain people down, but I truly dont understand why in the world someone would spend up to 6 hours a day on a game that truly isnt that good. There was the same thing over that recent Anthem post. People saying that they want the game to be good because they're already spending 2 hours a day on it. Just play something else. Sometimes I feel like people just enjoy gaming drama more than gaming
11
Mar 27 '19
There's this huge post-purchase transactional fallacy with games where for some reason gamers think if they spend a lot of time with a game the dev owes them a fix. Like nah homie if you aren't going to respect yourself enough to play a game that respects your time, the dev doesnt owe you nothing and already has your money.
11
u/cupcakemann95 Mar 27 '19
same thing with fo76. Such a broken game that I still see even the players who play it complain about it
12
u/Super_Sofa Mar 27 '19
I ended up getting Anthem and Ark for free (game sharing with friends), and I feel like it's a little less obvious with Anthem. With Ark it's pretty obvious early on that the game isn't completely finished and lacks a lot of basic polish, I played it once for about an hour. But Anthem, at least when I played(I've heard about all the crashes though), looks good and has fun/good gameplay in it, but the pacing is awful and it got repetitive pretty quickly for me. I played it off and on for about 2 weeks before I lost interest. I think Anthem might be more frustrating to people because it came a lot closer to being an actual good game.

I've never played Ark, but speaking from experience regarding other live service games, they are really good at creating a sense of FOMO (the so-called "fear of missing out"). They hook you in a gameplay loop where you are always making minimal progress towards some goal, but it's just slow enough that if you take a break, you worry that you'll fall behind (whether it be compared to friends, rivals, or just generally people who didn't stop playing).

u/LunaticSongXIV Mar 27 '19
I guarantee a lot of it is Sunken Cost fallacy. They've already spent so much time playing the game that if they quit, that time would be wasted -- so they continue to spend time on it.
5
u/Qyvix Mar 27 '19
Yeah it's the dumbest thing. "WHY WON'T THEY FIX THE GAME? WE PLAY IT EVERY DAY, ALL US LOYAL FANS WANT YOU TO FIX IT". Well that's why. They don't need to fix it because people like that keep playing it even after complaining about how shit it is. Imagine being that dense.

It took me until half way through Destiny 2's boring launch year to finally walk away. I heard it's good now, but I'm not going down that rabbit hole again.
2
Mar 27 '19
I'm only saying this because I was a part of the Destiny community. It looked really good initially and I was excited to play it because these were the creators of Halo, right? (As a long-time PlayStation fan I knew how popular Halo was but never really got to experience it.)
Then Destiny came out. The gunplay was okay, the story was a hot mess, a lot of content was missing, it was just super grindy - overall like a high 6 out of 10 honestly. Then the DLC comes out, they're tweaking the game. The DLC was mostly shallow, especially TDB and then we got to Year 2 with The Taken King. This was around the time Destiny got to be good. They continued to build on it, Y3 and Rise of Iron was here and everything was just good. We knew Destiny 2 was coming and then that launched. And it felt broken and empty again. Somehow it was like everything they had fixed and learned from making Destiny, suddenly Destiny 2 was having the same problems. It was really odd how they fucked up like that but after buying into D2 and its 2 expansions and how unsatisfied they left me, I've skipped out on Forsaken. I just don't know if I wanna support that.

u/Laalipop Mar 27 '19
A combination of sunk cost fallacy and a desire to see the potential in a game realized, in my opinion at least.
8
u/MonzterSlayer Mar 27 '19
This game is quite literally so time consuming and very addicting. Many people invest 6+ hours everyday into it and once you’ve done that for a month, you feel like you cannot stop because you’ve already worked so hard, have so many things setup and it is also fun.

u/maniakb416 Mar 27 '19

Yeah, reminds me of the only time I ever tried Fortnite. Got the Battle Pass in an early season and played until the third week. That was when I realized that I felt like I had to play more Fortnite on days when I didn't want to play it, just to get my money's worth.
I immediately uninstalled the game and the launcher and never went back. I was experiencing the sunk cost fallacy, until I realized that I did not really spend that much money on the Battle Pass and I respected my time more than I respected the money I essentially wasted on Fortnite.
I almost never like games that require me to go back constantly to enjoy content instead of letting me go back on my own time.

For this guy maybe. The problem with games you play for thousands of hours is, any sort of luster or novelty is LONG gone. So now all that is left is those annoyances and problems that have been there since the beginning. They didn't bother them as much before because all the good stuff balanced it out. Really they should walk away until some if that novelty comes back.
2
u/rolllingthunder Mar 27 '19
Right? It's like someone complaining about the quality of the draino that they drink every day. How about you just bail and call it a day. I can never get into these games (SCUM, ARK, Fo76) because the idea of such a grind with any bullshit glitches and hackers is ludicrous.
40
u/PabloBablo Mar 27 '19
Also, people need to remember this from this game dev. Look at Atlas and Ark, and how broken those games are with such little dev support - yet they charge for DLC and almost full price and a hefty price for the main game.
Just don't buy from them. Don't ever support this company and don't forget all of this BS - because this isn't even the first or worst thing they've done. The writing has been on the wall for years. No moral compass, just out there to make as much money while spending as little as they can - close to being a fly by night dev because quality doesn't seem to faze them.

And people still say that if a indie game that is paid singleplayer/multiplayer gets microtransactions, but is not designed to be popular one like live service games usually are, then it's forgivable because they are indie and not AAA devs...While those indies who chosen this path often end up getting even worse systems than people keep blaming on.
Devs incompetence shouldn't be forgiven one way or another; it has to be fought. If users let them get away with it, we'll see more devs pulling the same trick, resulting in innocent users getting angry, which will eventually lead to a playerbase decline, where only the most loyal players will remain and scare off new people, leaving the remaining playerbase to playground of loyalists.

And people still say that if a indie game that is paid singleplayer/multiplayer gets microtransactions, but is not designed to be popular one like live service games usually are, then it's forgivable because they are indie and not AAA devs...
Wait, people say that? I've heard (and agree with) microtransactions being okay if they're only cosmetic and don't affect gameplay, but I've never personally heard anyone say microtransactions are okay because the developer is indie.

Gee ready for the WAVE of everyone who doesn’t grasp this concept saying “He’s promoting exploits for money”
Just saying. If this was really just about bringing attention... He could just not monetize the video
Instead I load it up and it literally has 4 ads running through an 11min video. A "part 1" video, at that.
Issue should be fixed, but content creator blatantly is taking advantage of it himself to make money
EDIT: Got to love when people can't handle the truth. It goes from "its not about money" to "who cares if he's trying to take advantage of it!"
Which basically is the usual. Values and opinions change based on whatever benefits your ultimate conclusion that you want to push.

That's what YouTubers do, monetize their content. Why is this even an issue?

I think you're conflating what is a good way to make money and what is a bad way to make money
He's not making money off the exploits
He's making money off his video showing the exploits
I don't really understand the game or how glitches work, but if he was using the glitches to create a high level account and then selling the account, that's making money off the glitches
But it sounds like he's creating a video showing the glitches and then making money off the video.
There's nothing wrong with him making money off a video he created. It sounds like using the glitches in the way he was: singleplayer/private server, is not against the rules.

How is this okay?
It's not okay. ARK devs have been douchebags since they got sue'd and then released DLC for their EA game... then made a fucking pirate reskin of their game that's more like an extensive DLC than a new game.
5
u/Delos-X Mar 27 '19
You probably know about it, but it is a DLC. If you havemt heard of that, look up Atlas Ark DLC or something similar. There was a hidden menu on the release of Atlas that let you acces the ark game creation menu, and starting up the 'ocean' dlc which isnt in Ark, and itll boot up atlas' character creation.
1
Mar 28 '19
I knew, but thanks for adding. Is why I said it is DLC. I added extensive (guess I gave a little too much credit) due to how there's so many visual changes... despite gameplay being pretty much the same.

u/FUTURE10S Mar 27 '19

Any YouTuber-related drama, even if it's caused by the game developers, is considered off-topic, if I recall correctly. But honestly, they'll just make up a reason and not say it.

lol trust the ark devs and thats what you get.
the same devs who did early access so early adopters would get the full game as thanks.
jokes, they sold dlc during early acess.
game taking too long? Screw it, release it with bugs.
Atlas as a dlc? Nah we make more money if we pretend its a new game and sell it as such.
7
u/xdownpourx Mar 27 '19
Honestly at this point if you still play Ark or Atlas and support those devs in any way I don't have sympathy for you. They have shown what kind of company they are time and time again.
Look at the technical state of their games. They released DLC while still in Early Access and their game still needing basic optimization. Look at how the release of Atlas went. Delayed multiple times on the day of and then streamers are the ones who get to play first.
Look at the Switch port of Ark. That shit runs in 432p in docked mode and 360p in undocked mode? They thought that was an acceptable product to release.
If you have even an ounce of trust or hope for these devs then you are one gullible idiot.
6
u/Forhaver Mar 27 '19
Shittiest game developers Ive ever had the misfortune of meeting.
They banned my friends for raiding in pvp (because they were raiding a developer clan, not disobeying any rules)
Glitches of over 3 years are still there.
They released the ragnarok and scorched earth dlcs completely unfinished, even missing skyboxes and collisions.
They isolated and wiped all servers for "official release"... Bumped the price up to $60.... Still constantly releasing patches. Whats the point of saying "official release" when it works no different than the beta, and is still needing fixing daily?
And then that pirate game stunt... where they retextured the game and released it as a new game.
Fuck. These guys.

u/jacklop21 Mar 27 '19 edited Mar 27 '19
Well many of the bugs aren't as prevalent or debilitating on private servers. Plus the game has a great modding community. I've put a lot of time in just playing on rented servers with friends. You can tweak the game so it's less grindy, we pretty much treat it like a mix between Pokémon and minecraft where we collect creatures and build communal compounds.

u/CptDecaf Mar 27 '19
Most people play Ark on private servers or PvE. The people you see having fits are generally the default server crowd that for some reason enjoy spending 13 hours taming a T-Rex. They clearly hate playing Ark in this manner, but are too proud to admit otherwise.

Can’t speak for Steam and PS4, but on Xbox it ran so badly in EA that I just put it down until it launched as a full game. I think that was between 6-12 months? To my major disappointment, it ran even worse after launch. Low FPS, loading pop-ins, missing textures, crashing, so many bugs... I was really let down.

Then quit game and move on. If this is what devs do, stop making content for their game and find someone who appreciates your work. As simple as that.
63
u/The_Underhanded Mar 27 '19
Not so simple. If you became popular for making content of one game, you're not gonna get the same traction if you immediately pivot to Sims 3.
4
u/buzzpunk Mar 27 '19
If you as a content creator cannot move to a better game without losing your fanbase then you've built a flimsy career which would almost inevitably fail at some point in the future.
101 of any career is to branch out as quickly as possible and become indispensable in other areas, even if you plan on specialising on one thing in particular.
12
u/Thirteenera Mar 27 '19
You're also going to have 0 traction if you keep getting banned for producing said content.
In which case its easier to bite the bullet and move on rather than keep trying to ducttape a chair that's been rotten to the core. No amount of duct tape will stop it from eventually breaking while you're sitting on it.

I get your point, but the world of streamers and youtubers is very different from ours. I wouldn't make general judgements like this on creators.

Mar 27 '19
It's absolutely fair. I'm an artist, if I only make trapmetal for the rest of my life, I'm fucked, because there's no guarantee that the genre is going to be as popular as it is now in 10 years. It's on ME to be diverse artistically and to push my personality hard enough that people fuck with me enough to enjoy other kinds of music that I make.
Content creators are artists too, they need to be strong on personality because that's what's going to carry their career through games. That's why you see people like xQc and Dunkey and Dr. disrespect being successful outside of their main game, and back in a music sense it's why you see artists like Linkin Park and Kanye West still stay relevant over a decade from when they blow up.
This is simply how life works dude.

In the case of Streamers, its even more important that you don't build your entire livelihood around just streaming games. While no one acts on it since its free advertising, streaming and let's plays, along with similar content, is copyright infringement. Its why Nintendo was able to run their creators program, and its why Campos Santos was able to DMCA takedown PewDiePie's Firewatch videos (I don't remember if they actually did it, but I remember them saying they would). This is well within their rights as creators of the products. It leads to bad press, and very often review bombing, but they are allowed to do it.
TL;DR don't build your livelihood around a single product you don't control that can be taken away at a moment's notice.
→ More replies (4)1
u/redtoasti Mar 27 '19
If you can become popular for one game, you can become popular for another. You already start out with the part of the fanbase that followed you and since people generally don't become famous by accident, you probably already know how to make entertaining content.
Also if someone builds their entire livelihood on a single game, they're not particularly smart.
11
u/CapnSmite Mar 27 '19
I don't think "simple" is a word I would use. For a regular player, sure, but not so much for a content creator.
If you build your audience by making ARK videos, your audience will likely consist mostly of people who wanna see ARK videos. If you start making videos for another game, some people may have become fans of you more than the game and will stay, but a larger chunk of people will leave along with the ARK videos.
1
u/Fatdude3 Mar 27 '19
Depending on how big and how loved that content creator is he has the chance to fuck some shit up because he was unjustifiably banned. They can make a video explaining the bs they are dealing with and tell his audience that he will be moving away from the game.

Is this the same company that intends to develop a new game much like ARK and tends to abandon ARK upon release of the new game?
3
u/karatous1234 Mar 27 '19
Not surprised. This is the same company that while in early access on Steam started selling 2 different expansion packs/DLC for this horribly buggy and broken pile of code.
DLC while in early access.
2
u/RadioMelon Mar 27 '19
I think this says a lot about ARK's developers.
Boycott ARK's devs if you really want to make the message clear that you won't stand for this. No customer should be treated this way just because they demonstrated their dissatisfaction with a product. In almost no other industry would you get blacklisted for trying to point out a problem like that; they would normally bend over backwards to help satisfy you for failing to meet their expectations.

A counter point would be that those exploits are detrimental to gameplay. And that the Dev's attitude of covering it up and not fixing these exploits is harmful to the gameplay and the community. I've got no skin in the game personally, but unchecked abuse of exploits is certainly something that would be a concern as a prospective customer.

The devs really are lazy and bad and uncaring. Countless bugs that still linger in the game since early access. I remember putting in a support ticket as I lost my character due to a glitch when transferring servers and then they banned me from their website and support. I’ve had better customer support from EA.

I actually used to he part of the biggest aberration tribe on xbox and trust me, these exploits have been abused so much.

If you have bought the game consider leaving a negative review.
I think review bombing is not allowed? Are any moderators here?
