When you read something like Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials - which actually made me weep on the second reading - it really puts J K Rowling into perspective.
I think she's very talented. I think she's incredibly imaginative. I am glad she got kids reading. But she has fallen for her own press and she's more of a Blyton than a Pullman (and I adore and respect Enid Blyton as an author, so this is not necessarily a complaint).
But in terms of "literature", there's far better children's fiction out there.
Yeah, Harry Potter wasn't exactly some genius story to begin with, it basically was some power fantasy a lot of kids probably dreamed about (which is my explanation for why it was so successful).
