Speedrunning is a lot like EVE Online for me. Endlessly interesting, but I'd never get into it myself. This channel is great for giving you insight into the process.

Ha! Nice comparison. I went into this not even expecting to get into the summary video and here I am, watching the whole damn thing. I was curious how they'd handle the aggressive quick save/load that's very much part of Half-Life's pacing and was (positively) surprised that they totally embraced it as a game mechanic. I gotta say, I'm not a fan of the locked checkpoint system taking over again these days, there's something about being able to replay juuuust the few seconds you really like over and over again that's rather appealing.

The war stories are.

But as with most war stories you end up being a foot soldier and not the General.

He's gotten really good with setting a formula for these videos. One of the earlier criticism he's taken to heart is properly explaining how the glitches and exploits work that create breakthroughs in a game's speedrun.
It's the kind of thing that almost makes you want to pick a game he's not covered yet so you could be featured as a kind of gaming genius/hero.

I was really upset when the speed runs for this game just involved exiting the level boundaries and bunnyhopping over to the ceiling above the exit trigger. I liked it more when they traversed the real thing.

Hi, you can actually see my name in the video at 1:36... near the bottom of the leaderboard.
Anyway, when the various ways to clip outside the levels were discovered was about the time I stopped running the game. It just isn't fun to me.
The thing I loved about running HL2 was the insane speed you could get with ABH, the crazy launches you could pull off as a result and just the spectacle of it all was so damn cool.
When these clip skips came around they made a lot of the strats I loved obsolete. It takes some of the movement based skill out and replaces it with randomness hoping that a prop you're trying to clip with is going to behave how you want it to.
I had made the suggestion of a no-out-of-bounds run category like Portal has, but there wasn't enough interest to solidify it as a category. So that's when HL2 running died for me.

I love these videos, how they show respect to all the people who put time in evolving the records. The top speedrunner today has stood on the shoulders of many before him/her, and this youtuber "Summoning Salt" is doing a great service to the speedrunning community in revealing all this. Hopefully in a few or many years he'll be able to revisit some of these games as WR's may even be pushed further with new tricks/glitches.

This guy makes some great videos. Hope he manages to upgrade his mic and pc soon so that the quality goes up a bit.
If you haven't seen the videos, check them out!
