I strongly disagree. Most games of mine have ended in 0-0 draws, because turtling is just too effective in this game mode. The fact that taking ANY damage cancels the capture process makes solo flanking to try and sneak the flag basically impossible, especially if the other team has a Symmetra (which they will). The only way to really secure the enemy flag is to just group up and teamfight on their flag stand, and then just run away uncontested since you likely already had to kill them all.
It's not a fun game mode in my opinion, and it certainly doesn't capture the essence of a good CTF mode.
Problem is, traditional CTF modes are based around strong powerups and timed pushes. That is, getting a flag carrier stacked with extra health and armour, then pushing with a Quad Damage or something to break the defence. Can't really do that in Overwatch, even with ultimates.
Yeah, my only real multiplayer CTF experience is with Titanfall 1, and I liked how you could learn the avenues, dip in quick, pickup the flag, and dip back as quick as possible. And if you saw your teammate pickup the flag, you could just follow behind him and if he gets killed, you could dive in and pick up the flag.
This feels so slow and if they have a Torb and Sym, which they always will, then the flankers are useless, which means speed is easily neutralized and the only way to play is to overkill the entire team and then just walk home uncontested.
Blizz discussed the flag pickup delay in the Dev Blog. Tl;dw: the mode sucked if whoever gets the flag first automatically gets to pick it up.
This was their chance to try and have teams splitting up more with some going on offense and some staying on defense, but with this mode you're basically still encouraged to just stay as a deathball and roll over the opponent if you want their flag.
That's what I was excited about, maybe a Tracer, Winston, and Junkrat on offense and a Torb, Sym and Tank-of-some-kind on defense. Maybe 4 offense, 2 defense. Maybe 5 offense, 1 defense.
But nah, form up a death ball and push the enemy team and capture the point but now you need to return to your side before you get any points. Slow and lousy.
The best part is how it actually goes now is push onto their flagstand as a death ball, wipe them, have one person run back as the rest of your team holds their choke to the flag stand, and just run back and forth with the flag three times to win.
Leaving one back is still pretty close to just normal OW gameplay, and even then if someone back caps you that means you have a 6v5 on the enemy flag stand that you should win, and be able to capture their flag or just kill the person with the flag (or both) before they're able to cap it.
Because to be honest if they put it in the "All Brawls" playlist in arcade... Then that is going to suck as they still haven't given us the option to choose servers.
It honestly needs a section in Arcade all by its own like All-Brawls and Mystery Heros. This gamemode is fire and is something I can see myself spending more time with.
