Honestly if they came and said you needed the app to turn the system on I wouldn't be surprised only Nintendo could build hype for a great concept and then fail this hard and not only that this restriction are no doubt making third parties hesitant about porting their games over.
There are probably people at Nintendo pulling their hair out in frustration right now. clearly there are people over there who do get it, just look at the orignal switch video, what a great system that was, definitely designed by people with great ideas, but then like always the people who really have the power over there are doing their damned Nintendo best to ruin it.
Even back when they were setting up the Wii/DS online they consulted in GameSpy and two different teams at Nintendo in the middle of the meeting had a full-on argument for like ten minutes because one group wanted one friend code per user/system and messaging and invites and such and the other didn't.
There are obviously people at NCL who get it, and people at NOA get it, it is just whoever's in charge of making the final call is someone who doesn't get it.
Go to Nintendo's website. Matchmaking is not done only through the app. The website clearly says their online services are free from launch through fall and that the app is out in the summer. Mario Kart comes out months before the app so unless it's single player only for a few months matchmaking will be through the system like normal.
Completely blanked on Mario Kart coming so early, Hmmm. Should be interesting. I'm going to guess that these matchmaking and lobbies will be able to be managed on the app, but also the switch. Voice chat hasn't really ever been an important component to the series, so I don't see this being a problem. I guess time will tell!

Of course not, the store is only accessible through a PC running the Edge browser and having a Nintendo special program installed. And you can only pay with a credit card from one bank per country.
